The Last Voyageurs - Genealogy of the 56 Caughnawaga Mohawk Voyageurs on the Egypt Expedition 1884-85

On September 14, 1884, fifty-six men from the Mohawk Indian Reserve in Caughnawaga (Kahnawake), set sail from Montreal in Quebec Canada, destined for Alexandria, Egypt. They were expert boatmen and river pilots, called voyageurs, who worked on the Saint Lawrence River, experts at traversing the rapids and riverways of the Northwest. They were recruited by the British Government to help transport British troops and supplies halfway around the world, through the cataracts of the Nile. This book supplements the work of others who identified many of these men. We can now provide new details about their genealogy, including records of their births, marriages, parents, and names of many of their children. Our purpose is that their descendants may discover their ancestors and learn of their adventures on the Nile.
