How did everything Abraham Lincoln and The Wide Awake's party stood for morph into Donald Trump and the Proud Boys?

Good question, I've often wondered myself? Think it's a fringe faction of the Republican Party and on the flip side there are many Republicans/conservatives who can't stand Trump's guts. As for the Proud Boys, when I first heard about them I was interested as they claimed to be in strong favor of the Second Amendment, but they lost me as a supporter when I heard about some of their harassment campaigns against some others who held opposing views on that matter. These activist groups (from both political sides) make me leery, small wonder why I'm an introvert who doesn't bother much with such factions/identity movements.

They flipped. As late as the 60's George Wallace was a Democrat. The racists abandoned the Republican party when Civil Rights legislation was passed. It really shifted over the next decade.

FDR was a very good Democratic President, though.

Nixon's Southern Strategy of the 70s finally morphed in 2016 and Trump made the KKK and their clones mainstream.
