One site I looked at said it can come from inside a laying hens ovaries, but also from dirty eggs. Most factory farm hens are in cages and I would assume a bit cleaner than a farmyard. I was at a clients house last week and they have 40 chickens but because they are free range, chicken shit everywhere. Did get a dozen free eggs though after reading some of the things on the internet, I will probably wipe the eggs down with a sanitized cloth.

Not a bad idea!
