Hinduism, The oldest religion on the planet.

Am I correct in my belief that there are no recorded wars connected to Hinduism anywhere in the history of the last 2 millennia?
Why do you suppose the Hindu faith is so passive?
Could it be that it might have something to do with the fact that the Hindu faith comprises over a hundred serarate deities and therefore the faithful are too busy praying to fight a war?
I am not overly fasmiliar with Asian religions but as far as I am aware, Hinduism is about as passive as any religion can be and Buddhism isn't that far behind on the passiveness scale.
What is it with these religions that makes the followers passive?
With Buddhists, could it be the fact that they consider animals to be spiritual hence their reasons for not eating them? Maybe, because they don't eat meat, they don't use any form of violence in producing their food, let's face it, killing, no matter how "Humanely" it is done, is still killing and killing is violence.
There, something to ponder on.

I was born a very conservative, religious Hindu. I will give you what I know:

  1. No much of recorded wars because we were not good with writing history and recording events. For over the last thousand years, India was one of the most invaded countries in the world. That is the only time we kind of took breaks from our infighting. We were busy being ruled by invaders from Persia, Mughalistan, Afghanistan, Greece, Portugal, France, Holland, Britain and so on.

  2. India had over 6,000 kingdoms and they were always busy fighting among themselves. When the invaders came, many of them joined hands with the invaders to preserve their kingdoms and lifestyles.

  3. There is a peculiar attribute of Hindus. We do not fight the enemy. When the enemy comes, we either join hands or just surrender. That is why we were always conquered by smaller countries by size and population. However we were very good at infighting, harassing own women and children with most primitive traditions and dictates. The same behavior is on full display in India now with Hindu nationalists. These people will not join the army to fight the enemy but will do riots and beatings in streets.

  4. There are a very few events of armed rebellions during foreign occupations. Smaller rebellions were squashed very quickly and brutally like Mir Amir Taimur from Mighlaistan killed a thousand people in Delhi in 2 hours in 1200s. The biggest rebellion that is known and talked about was against the British rule organized by Indian kings was in 1857. That was squashed too.

  5. We are passive by behavior. We call ourselves peaceful but it is just another name for cowardice. It has been evident throughout the history.

  6. Yes, we believe there are 330 million Gods and all live in the sacred cow - although Hindu meat eating and animal sacrifices are known throughout the ancient history. Today, India is the biggest exporter of beef to the world after Brazil.

  7. Why we are so passive or coward. My guesses are 2. We were vegetarian and peaceful farmers in the Indus valley in the beginning. We were not explorers or fighters. We retreated each time there was an invasion. Secondly, we have misconstrued the meaning of being peaceful in the scriptures. We have taken it as - do not respond to aggression. Gandhi added to it with his quote - if you slap me on one cheek, I will offer another.

  8. It is false that there are no or little meat eating in India. Meat consumption in India is heavy.

Aboriginals, from whatever area, are ignored, After all, to have worthwhile gods, you can't be one with nature, can you?

I have never considered the Aboriginals, theirs is not a true religion because they in essence, worship the planet and not a deity.

@meister268
Guess it depends on one's definition of "religion"...

I think you have it backwards, Buddhism is more peaceful than Hinduism. I could be wrong about this, but at one point in time the Hindus did wage war against the Buddhists.

Some day, I hope people will stop dragging Bhuddism into the category of religions.

There's a topic for a post Holysocks.
I'd probably read and comment on that one.

Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu persuades Prince Arjuna to go to war with his cousins IIRC.
As a side note, Australian Aboriginal religious practices stretch back at least 50K years (possibly 68K). They always seem to be forgotten.

Since India became independant from England in 1948, the Hindus of India have periodically had small border skirmishes with the Moslems of Pakistan.

@ Texasrunner. Hindus are extremely accepting people. They don't care what you believe, just don't attack them because you hate them for whatever reason.

@Holysocks This absolutely not true. This may be your opinion as a tourist. The reality is very different on the ground.
