Because N.O.W. didnt like the social status of women in a culture barely out of the stone age. The nature of this culture was elegantly , if however politically incorrectly, portrayed, in the highly recomended movie THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING (1975). And american feminists demanded that it was somehow the business of the poor, class exploited, " U.S.A........ U.S.A. " brain washed, high school graduate level , overwhelmingly MALE army cambat soldiers to fly in there and do their bidding. Saving womankind in Afganistan. NPR and PBS beat this causeist war drum on a daily basis back then.

And in we went, a theatrical extravaganza as always at first. Immensely expensive feminist peasant - elevating social and educational programs were immediately put in place, As is customary these days in this brave new world of Progressive feminist thought control, it is impossible for the public to clearly disentangle the costs of such things. The war itself comes in at quoted estimates between 75 billion dollars and 2 trillion. Salaries for new women bureaucrats and staffers, both American and Afganistani, were doubtless a huge element of that budget. The newly minted class of clichee spouting ascot wearing fem-pols staffed the new pentagon program offices, and gave regular interview pep talks to Judy Woodruff and her like, the new class of feminist news people. Not only newly minted but now completely dominant. The inbred power circle of mass media dominated democracy. Their game.

And meanwhile (again thought control veils public statistics) but probably 2 to 3 thousand young boys died in agony on battlefields. i did find figures for the 2017 casualties....174 female american deaths, 2 to 3 thousand male deaths. thanks to the miracle of modern helicopter medi vac, probably only another 5 to 20 thousand were crippled and maimed for life. Feminism has been remarkably quiet about that
