I've been pondering for a few years on what we mean by the word "soul." I don't believe in the magical ghost that lives forever and all that nonsense, but the word soul is still in use in other ways, and we all have an ideal what it means. This music has soul, it hurts deep in my soul, etc. I'm now of the opinion that it's a deep mind-body connection, basically. What do you think?

It is my personal belief that people have a spiritual side. Most People are filled with passion , conscience ,hopes and desires. Without a spiritual side life is reduced to if you can't eat it, run away from it, fuck it or beat the shit out it, then it does NOT exist.

Soul originally meant "Individual" in the sense of a specific person.
In time it became synonymous in theological circles with, spirit or essence via the Greek Psyche and the actual life force anima (Latin).
The term selling your soul simply meant placing yourself in the employ of some one else, but again over time a metaphysical aspect came in to play making the phrase much more satanic and in effect self-damnation.

Today there are three widely used definitions

Soul as a synonym for spirit or mind
Soul as an attribute of cultural behaviour especially among Afro Caribbean Americans
Soul as a tangible life force, entirely separate from spirit, god's spark within.

I never use the word 'soul', because I've bever understood it.

@Keyboard-Mama A fine example you'd like me to emulate? I don't think so! 🙂

Ok, I don't know what y'all mean, but this is what I mean:

There is a self beneath myself. Oh, hi, by the way my name is David. That's who I usually identify as. This is David's body, and his brain, and thus his thoughts directing his fingers to type this bit o' text.

But mentally, I know this is a construct. Probably of my brain, which marvellously tries to make sense of things. There is something deeper underneath, that I have a hard time explaining. OK, so I'm thinking thoughts-in English, no less. But these thoughts-how do they get organized and born? Before the writing, there is intention, but before the intention there is....something else.

So, like, I write poetry and songs. Where do they come from? Not the raw experiences that I create them out of...but the rhythms, the melodies, the suchness of them. That....distillation/filtering process....springs from somewhere below my consciousness. Can such a thing exists without some form of biological fuel? I do not know, but I know that this is something I share with other people, and when it lights up, so do theirs.

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

IMO soul is just another word for a person.

I think "soul" is often meant to convey the essence of a person, that person's uniqueness and peculiar makeup. I got into trouble here awhile back for using the word, but perhaps I wasn't articulating my thoughts well about it.

its all in the mind

Some say that the body ,and intelligence make up the Soul of a human. No real definitive answer with all the different positions we have on the planet ; it just really depends what you gravitate towards belief wise.

I think its too over used to mean a real deep connection when most people use it. I try not to because I don't have a spiritual side. I've always had an intense mind body connection, so it seems normal to me I guess.
