I think that Greta is doing an amazing job on the angry and rightfully outraged, young environmentalist front but there is more than one path to finding a solution to the man made problems with our planet's environment.

This is unrelated to the young girls activism but I'm fascinated by the surname Peltier. We have some local Indians with that name here in Oklahoma and they are Citizen Band Potawatomi. Leonard Peltier the well-known imprisoned activists is Ojibwa and this young girl is an even different tribe.

Since the name is actually of French origin and refers to someone who worked with pelts, I am guessing it is a name that was given to Africans and Indians by the white man. Perhaps many different tribes ended up with that surname because most of them worked with animal pelts.

Wow. Way over my pay grade.

Since Peltier is French for furrier and the coureur de bois (wood runners) travelled extensively in Native Lands before civilization discovered them, it makes sense that the name Peltier would be quite common amongst the Metis and the Native Peoples. By the time that African slaves were freed and moved West, the fur trade would have been largely played out so it's unlikely that name would have gone to Africans who often derived their surnames from their previous masters surname once they became free men.
My surname is Wainwright which means wagon maker and it is quite a rare surname in North America but when I lived in Bermuda there were 4 pages of Wainwrights in the phone book on an island of around 60k people. When the slaves were emancipated in the 1830's they typically received the surname of their previous owner as slaves typically only had a proper name until that point. Since Mr. Wainwright was a large employer at the Royal Naval Dockyard (if you can build wagons you can build ships) there were suddenly a lot of Wainwrights in Bermuda. Ironically, I was told on several occasions while living in Bermuda that I could not be a Wainwright because all the Wainwrights in Bermuda are now black, the white Wainwrights having died out or moved on over the centuries. Surnames are interesting.

@SnowyOwl thank you for wandering through my surname journey. I didn't mean to imply that there were African people named Peltier only that they derived their surname by assignment from white people.
Your explanation of African surnames was much better than mine about Indian ones.

Or married in.

@Lorajay It's an interesting experience to be in another country and be told that you are not who you say you are because you are the wrong coloured skin tone for local wisdom. It's a bit like being a circus act sometimes, come and check out the White Wainwright. lol Then again I have been referred to with racist labels and when I pointed out that this was a racist thing to do I was informed that it was impossible for the labels to be racist because the speaker was not white and racism is an exclusively white condition. It's a funny world we live in, everyone the same and everyone different at the same time.

@SnowyOwl What's a phone book for?

@ChurchLess They raise little old ladies up on the seats of their cars when they are driving, so they can see over the wheel. Also handy to stop bruising when placed up against a detaineeès arm and then beaten on with a night stick. Very handy things, you can even look up a phone number or service in them, my 2021 phone arrived in my mailbox just last month. I know - What is a mailbox

@SnowyOwl Must be a Canadian thing. LOL

@ChurchLess Shiite! Florida is a step away from becoming a Canadian Territory, well at least for the winter months. LOL

@SnowyOwl Yep, it is.
