Are atheists and agnostics more (or less) likely to participate in alternative lifestyles (e.g. swinging, hotwife/cuckold play or polyamory) than our religious counterparts?

We have been living in an "Open Marriage" and lately, we have practiced polyamory. We've been in an open relationship for over 15 years and almost all the people we met who shared either swinging, or a loving poly relationship, professed to be strong Christians. We never understood the reason; for the record, there also seemed to be an abundance of nurses, teachers and too a lessor degree, attorney's and other professionals.

Yes I believe so

IF there were some correlation I would guess more Christians. I have noticed that many Christians have strange repressed views about sex and make a natural thing a sinful thing. That repression can lead to hidden and more 'alternative' expressions of sexuality.

yes I wondered this - thanks for posting it!

I've attended a few swinger parties and have met people on these occassions who consider themselves Christians. To look at them you'd think butter wouldn't melt, but obviously they have the ability to seperate their faith from their liberated desires. However, I'd definitely say the majority of swingers, cuckolds etc are, at the very least, non-religious.

I couldn't determine such, as I could only speak directly from my point of view. I would not fall under any of the examples you provided above, but as an atheist I am more inclined to engage in sexual relations more frequently and with no regards to what the puritans may think about me. With that said, I strictly have relations with one woman at a time though.

No.

Do I dare Google cuckold ?

Probably want to go to xnxx.com for a more thorough explanation.

No correlation

I don't think so. One's choice of sexual behavior has nothing to do with religion. If anything, I would predict that more religious people are swingers or polygamous.

Polygamers? Like players?

Im poly, bi & open. I like feeling NOT OWNED. I appreciate the honesty, love and communication in my base relationship. There's not indiscriminate sleeping around in our relationship. But that's just MY personal relationship. I can't speak on behalf of others. For me, it has nothing to do with religion.

There are people who engage in all sorts of things, all over.

I don't think so - seems to be across the board.

You'd certainly expect a correlation between breaking away from religion and breaking away from religious appropriation of sexual pleasure in order to put future generations of bums on pews (within religiously sanctified relationships only, of course.)

In reality, I've been surprised by just how many Christians are out and about in the swinging and BDSM scenes. Maybe some can reconcile it with their faith. Maybe some get an even bigger thrill from breaking their religion's taboos.

Agree with this completely. Of all the couples I know that I'm aware fall into a particular kink category or a "non-vanilla" relationship agreement, none of them are Atheists.

Of course, atheists have fewer opportunities to casually disclose their (lack of) religious affiliation. Most people I know to be Christians, it's because they've dropped a give-away into the conversation. They've mentioned going to church, having tea with the vicar, and stuff like that. So it's hard to quantify without doing a survey, really.

Someone asked a similar question recently. There do seem to be quite a few poly people on here. But I think it is because atheists/agnostics are "open." Either with their sexuality or their thoughts.

I did all that a very long time ago when i said i was a Christian ... im not doing it today.

No, we just don't hide it behind Jesus !
