Destructive Gullibility

Voltaire declared that “Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

Trump’s “big lie” fits the definition of an absurdity perfectly. His rant, proclaimed ad nauseum, claimed the presidential election was rigged and he was the real winner; a gross absurdity with absolutely zero evidence to support it. Having already indoctrinated his brain-washed followers to accept anything he fed them, getting them to accept the farce was a piece of cake. No collaborating evidence required!

As Voltaire warned, this absurdity resulted in one of the worst atrocities in American history. Under Trump’s incitement, his gullible followers mounted the seditious insurrection attempt to overrun the U.S. Capitol and illegally invalidate the election of President Biden; an election evaluated to be one of the fairest and best run in our nation’s history.

Voltaire correctly foresaw the danger of a self-serving autocrat. Too bad so many devoted followers were so susceptible in their inability to see through Trump’s scam. Too bad so many Republican legislators, well aware of the fraud, backed him anyway; fearful of losing the support of the Trump-supporting voters in their upcoming elections.

(Note: For any fellow members who may be interested, I recently decided to establish a blog at agnosticliberal.com It’s a weekly blog alternating every other week between liberal and agnostic themed topics. It requires no log-in, personal information or cost. I’ll never know who checks it out. No strings attached.)
