Some say the object of this song, for each of us, must be a "jesus figure" - that is an imaginary composite person made up from all of our ideal qualities, but this person can never truly exist.

True or false?

Thanks for posting, I had forgotten this group🥰🤩.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I met Creed Bratton, guitarist of The Grass Roots, several times. He was a friend of my acting coach Otto Felix. I also once ran into Creed on the set of Berni Mac, when I was working as an Extra. I never asked him why he was there.

We talked a little bit about the songs the group did. Their biggest hit, "Soomer or Later" evidently was the song they really didn't care for, because instrumentally it was "boring".

Anyway, any religious meaning people find in this song is their own projection. The song is about an obsessive romantic love.

I was actually a fan of the band long before I met Creed. I'm happy there is another fan on this site.

Make that 3. 😁

This is the best post ever

I don't care what the writer(s) had in mind, as I don't with much music.

I just know whether I like it, and what it means to me. Same goes for whatever I don't like.

I can't tell you what the writers really had in mind, that would take a mind reader or one of them clerics.

However, I as one of those that at one time like this song, I think I can tell you the reason it was so popular is it verbalizes the effect of "Love Hormones" on a person's psyche. And yes, that is the ultimate effect of those hormones, the person doesn't and really could never actually exist.

So I read the lyrics and it is just someone who has their ideal partner in their head and is willing to do anything to find them.
idealistic Love story probably unobtainable but then for everyone who says they have found their "perfect" partner if questioned would say the things they don't like about them but that they don't matter because everything else is perfect.

I had one partner who I loved without question and I would find it difficult to tell you why. No he was not perfect I could tell you all of the things that were a problem in our relationship but they did not matter. I did not see him for three years. Bumped into him and it was like nothing had happened. I met him once when I was with another man and wanted to distance myself from that person just to be near him.
As I said I have no idea why.
