Why are atheists not willing to form a coalition?

As the numbers of atheists (and uninformed agnostics) and general apathy towards religion thankfully is growing, why is there not a better formation of a recognized group? Is it more than this? Should a coalition be needed in the first place? Why or why not?

Atheists better get organized. Although we are a minority when compared to all religions combined, we are a very large, and growing "category" since us freethinkers don't wanna be in a group. LOL! X-tians have a political stranglehold on US politics now despite their shrinking numbers. Freethinkers, while maybe not necessarily organizing to take control of the US government, could, and I think, should, do what we can to spread ideas of reason and individual rights. The religious are already becoming enlightened. It's just not happening quickly enough, IMO. This site is one of those things that will help.

Because maybe us agnostics and atheists are just not "joiners" and salespeople on religious issues? To me it's a non-issue. Just because some of my friends are really into knitting and have weekly knitting meetings doesn't mean I need to form a coalition of anti-knitters to stop them from knitting so many ugly sweaters. As long as they don't give me one and order me to wear it I'll just mind my own business.

There are so many differences among freethinkers it is hard to form a coalition. Don't really think we need one-we are all so different.

We don’t need anything like that.

I think most atheists are just anti group anything. They don't need to belong to something quite as strongly as religious folk.

We don't want to commit the crime,of forced religion or beliefs on others. We don't want to be corrupted by money, and become greedy like them.

There are a number of sites for agnostics and athiests. Long before this site, there was the site for ‘Brghts’ and the ‘Flying SpagettiMonster’, as well as sites for secular humanism. Should there be a coalition? Sure, if it provides a forum for discussion or dissent. Also a social forum, a place to meet, discuss and be social with like-minded people.

Atheists-- like Christians-- are not a singular group. They have one thing in common-- atheism-- as Christians have one thing in common: the divinity of Christ (at least, I guess that's what they think.) My belief is that atheists should band together against the revolting religionist political movements that are encroaching on the separation of church and state. It's sad that it took the Jehovah Witnesses to get "saluting the flag" thrown out. We, as atheists, should be able to do the same. We are a growing segment of the population, yet are treated by the culture as a freak show. It would be nice if we could somehow counteract the popular notion of atheists.

Because we have our hard won freedoms and don't need to go back into that pot of glue again .

There are lots of coalitions: Freedom From Religion Foundation, The Humanists, the Brights (international group), Center for Inquiry and on and on.

Because it would be difficult to unite under 1 commonality.

Human intellect and individual ideas require no validation by groups. Our 'coalition' exists, but is limited by what is shared. We reject gods/theology. That's good enough. No additional criteria are needed.

As for other issues around which we can also unite, some of us might and some might not.

That is the way independent reasoning works. To articulate our own ideas and evaluate those of others is a distinctly human capacity belonging, not to groups, but to each person; as a sovereign free agent. To whatever extent we choose to subordinate that sovereignty, it becomes the price of alliance; a voluntary, partial abdication our primary incumbency.

Need for group validation is taught as early as possible by groups and their agents. We are conditioned to believe it's necessity at developmental levels preceding those at which self-awareness and reasoning abilities have ripened.

Resistance to grouping runs strong among atheists who reject and Agnostics who question that which would bind us into religious herds. It isn't, in my view, sufficient to be entirely free of overseers, but enough to be encouraging.

In my own little paranoid way, it seems the world and USA, is tumbling towards an either you are for or against us mentality.
In my sad vision, when the shit hits the fan here, the churches and 2'A'ers (mostly the same nowadays) are coming for us all. A little group protection might be a "nice thing" to have

I feel like what you're getting at is that church provides a sense of community. They help congregants when they experience hardship. Provide council when needed. Of course, I'm only mentioning the good stuff. Would I oppose a place that can offer those things? Nah. But then again, I'm an introverted loner with some social anxiety!

I think you've hit on an interesting observation here. I personally have seen a greater fragmenting of most Christian sects, as well as a growing number of very diverse Anamistic, Pagan, Naturalist and Centrist groups. It's possible that the growing number of disparate philosophies, coupled with the growing loss of interest in any religion or philosophy, has left fewer folks interested in any one specific practice.

As soon as atheists start a coalition it becomes a religion and that is what I am in rebellion about...it is one thing to have an Agnostic.com but entirely another to create a coalition where someone will want to be the leader... we are all leaders here... but we only lead ourselves..

Anarchists Unite!

Would be about as effective.

We are not commanded to become "Fishers of Men" or proselytize. We don't have a specific dogma to follow. Have you heard about the Reverend Moon? Would you like to buy a flower?

We have - FFRF, the satanic temple, for example. There are others.
Find them and go to work.

Same destination - different car.

You mean, like forming a union?
