We could have had a rematch, when both were on 20 grand slams apiece. But a dire threat to Australian society was deemed the world number one and defending champion of the Australian Open. Too dangerous to remain in the country even though he had broken no law and met all requirements. Government knew better.
Unfortunately if Rafael does end up with the most grand slam record, there will always be an asterix by his name.
My money is on Novak winning that title anyway
