The Freethought Cacus just formed in Congress, with four members. This info was on the Rachel Maddow website:

This week, Democratic Reps. Jared Huffman (CA), Jamie Raskin (MD), Jerry McNerney (CA), and Dan Kildee (MI) announced the formation of a new caucus, known as the Congressional Freethought Caucus, to safeguard the interests of nontheists in government, and to promote policies based, in their view, on reason and science.

A press statement emailed to journalists said, “The mission of the caucus is to promote public policy based on reason and science, to protect the secular character of our government, and to champion the value of freedom of thought worldwide.”

According to the statement, the caucus will actively work to “protect the secular character of our government”; promote science-bred public policy; counter discrimination against atheists, agnostics, and humanists; and provide a “forum for Members of Congress to discuss their moral frameworks, ethical values, and personal religious journeys.”

We as free thinkers should send them an email or a letter showing our combined support. Does anyone know how we could do this?

Too bad they didn't name it in gobbledy-speak so the far right won't understand what it's about.

What I fear most is suddenly some religious people, as they do now, will believe you must choose between science OR religion. NO, you can do both, but how can anyone not be into science, if you care about your medical future. I always find it so odd when someone survives a major medical problem and prayer and the Lord get all the credit!!

I'll be watching to see where it goes.

They shouldn't have to do this.

This exposes the bullying nature of religion.

Good idea. Let's just see how it goes in real time.

This is pretty amazing. I'm going to have to look into it as I missed it in the news

There are hundreds of different caucuses, and having one with only four members?! It’s not very major, thus wasn’t in the news, but something Rachel values, as do I.

@Bizarre but why not in the news? This is something significant and much more important than news that focuses on who is really the father of Kylie Jenner's baby or if Tristan and Klohe will reunite.

@AmelieMatisse I often wonder about what is never on the news. Today it seems like unless there is a video of tears, violence, prayer, laughter - it doesn’t make the news. And the 30 second laughter video, might be longer than something about a war death if there is no video. The proportion of CO2 in the atmosphere just bumped up above. 410 ppm, and I read about it only in one paper, due to being linked to a climate website. is there not more on the news about climate change, or all science? It frustrates me, but that is I like watching Rachel, she comes up with and explains things in a way that I can understand. She IS my go to on MSNBC. I’m a Citizen’s Climate Lobby (CCL) fanatic, their caucus keeps getting more and more Republicans, but does the news ever mention them? Seldom to never. Howard Baker and the Republicans have a Climate Change site, that is never mentioned either. The news in general is selling commercials, they don’t want to say anything that will immediately offend 40% or more of their listeners and have them turning away from that news source. In my mind Capitalism is often the issue, $$$ vs facts. $$$$ nearly always win.

@Bizarre you sure got that right

@AmelieMatisse I noticed tonight on the news, and this happens often, they covered the same water leak on a ship now I think three days in a row. Why? Cause the video is so entertaining. Sure, FOX, CNN, MSNBC don’t cover videos as much, but ABC. CBS, NBC, its more about selling ads. Capitalism!!! $$$ vs unfun facts.
