This morning eight or so God-botherers fanned out to knock doors along our street and proselytize, doing us the unrequested favor of saving our mortal souls from eternal hellfire. It's not helpful, in my opinion, to berate individuals (which serves only to entrench each side in their own positions) but I do have a real problem with the smug arrogance of Christianity - the very thing that, for three centuries, confounded Romans (and their inclusivity regarding foreign gods and goddesses, asking only that they be worshiped under adopted Latin noms-des-dieux) - that unquestioning self-assurance that there's alone and forevermore is the One True Religion and - even more astoundingly - that they can discern the wishes of a divine Almighty whom they believe is so galactically omnipotent and all-knowing as to extends across the vast, unknowable span of the universe.

Color me gobsmacked.

I went crazy with anger one day when my peaceful Sunday morning was rudely disturbed by a Salvation Army band that had assembled on the street outside my flat.

I went outside and confronted the band leader and asked them how long they would be. The band looked ridiculous in their Victorian uniforms, a total anachronism, and the band leader looked shocked that someone had dared to complain.

Have to say that, despite, a have a soft spot for the Sally Army, not least for the work they do - I remember working as a firefighter at a long, involved blaze at a paper-recycling facility in the English Midlands, and seeing the Salvation Army turn up, as they often did at large fires, with welcome sandwiches and revivifying cups of tea.

@moNOtheist

You realise the Salvation has a history of homophobia? You can find articles on the Internet if you search.

I used to think the Salvation Army did some good good for the homeless, now I've changed my mind. They have a toxic agenda.

No argument here, but I also think it's important to recognize the good along with the (often more considerable) bad, and to separate the individual from the organization (in the same way that it's a must to recognize the individual courage of a soldier, even in a contentious war such as the mire of Vietnam). That seems to offers more hope of prompting those of an opposing point of view to examine mine and their own perspectives.

They bring that to me. I did not knock on their door and try to sell them to my way if thinking. I know they have an agenda that is theirs it is not mine.This is my home not theirs. I would appreciate the same respect I have shown them to be given to me.

Precisely!

I was invited to a JW church tomorrow from some door knockers. I kind of want to go just to see how long it will take for them to kick me out after I yell “bullshit” a few times.

I find when I tell them I'm a witch and don't believe in the holy trinity and ask if they want to come inside (through the door with the pentacle wreath), they are at a loss for words with fake smiles plastered on their faces LMAO But, yes, there has always been that arrogance that their way is the "only way."

I'm usually pleasant to them and have congenial conversation and ask them questions, let them know that they don't have to be slaves to their made up god and to the church and so on. But the time they came knocking, I was working on a very complicated deal with very antagonistic, belligerent opposing parties and up against a crucial deadline on another big deal.. When I opened the door I said AH JESUS CHIST, YOU MF TOOK ME AWAY FROM MY work for this shit ....a lot of fbombs dropped. Yelling .. See this address ?? WRITE ID DOWN, MAKE SURE YOU SAHRE IT WITH THE FLOCK. IF ANY OF YOU KNOCK ON THIS DOOR.... I'm in the original make my day state. I don't know that I threatened them. Its been at least six years since they knocked. I've seen them canvasing the hood. I have never in my whole life ever gone off like that. Not even close. I still can't believe I did that. Totally out of character but, no visits for at least six years. But I'm not proud of it. They're just doing gods work and it's get important to them.

I disagree. I think you had every right to react that way.

I'm going to try it. LMAO!

Sounds like the unluckiest one of the bunch knocks on your door! I suspect we’ve all got our favorite method of knocking the legs from under their religion ..while leaving them standing 🙂

@SallyMc You want to leave them capable of returning to the hive with all kinds of new and wondrous questions 😉
