I think of ethics as being the codification (ritualization?) for the continuing probability of the best results of conflict and cooperation between intelligent rational decision-makers.

Yes. We are social by nature, and cooperation is built in to our genes. We may fight or quarrel, but we were not made to exist solitarily.
