For the sake of this hypothetical, let's say Jesus is real and really does want to come back. For whom? On one hand we've got modern day evangelicals living a gospel of prosperity who don't give a flying fuck about the rest of the world or its inhabitants. On the other hand, we have a pack of liberals who actually do seem to care about others (and from my observations have tried to make a difference in the world) but, the majority of them are non-religious and don't even believe in him. (Yes, I have a liberal bias but, it's my question so, calm your tits.) So, even though they are doing works more along the lines of what the New Testament says he commanded, they don't even believe in him.
What do you think might happen if he were to return? Would he embrace those who did good works? Or would he embrace those who are selfish and greedy but proclaim him God? Or... third option ... burn the whole fucking show?
Ok tough question, but I ll give it a punt.
It's important to ask whether you are asking this of the Gospel versions of Jesus or the historical Jesus or the gnostic Jesus.
I'd believe the gnostic version is far more accurate .I do love to think that the NT Jesus would burn the whole fucking show. He certainly is portrayed as doing that in the temple with the money exchangers.
Truth is, his second coming would probably a whole lot more low key.
He was teaching secret self enlightenment to those who would listen. He taught that we are all sons of god, if we but knew it and as such we should treat each other as we would like to be treated. We are all part of god and life on earth is his Kingdom ,right here right now,we just need to wake up and realise it.Understand this and you can overcome mortality because what you are living is not the be all and end all,we are not separate from this Universe(are not born nor die separate) ,we ARE this Universe.
OK not the strongest message ever but its a very good one as far as I am concerned.I'd see him more as a Ghandi/Bhuddha type figure.
He would not to claim to be god, other than he is the son of god just as are we all.He would not claim to be anything other than a teacher of the truth.
If you want a flavour of the things he might say, start here with the Gospel of Thomas(not in the Bible) here is a link with some good interpretations as it is in the language of very old scripture.
"And he said: He who shall find the interpretation of these words shall not taste of death."
"Jesus said: He who seeks, let him not cease seeking until he finds; and when he finds he will be troubled, and if he is troubled, he will be amazed, and he will reign over the All."
"Jesus said: If those who lead you say unto you: Behold, the Kingdom is in heaven, then the birds of the heavens will be before you. If they say unto you: It is in the sea, then the fish will be before you. But the Kingdom is within you, and it is outside of you. When you know yourselves, then shall you be known, and you shall know that you are the sons of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you are in poverty, and you are poverty."
"Jesus said: No prophet is acceptable in his village; a physician does not heal those who know him."
"Jesus said: I am the light that is over them all. I am the All; the All has come forth from me, and the All has attained unto me. Cleave a (piece of) wood: I am there. Raise up the stone, an ye shall find me there."
"Jesus said: Seek, and ye shall find; but those things concerning which ye asked me in those days, I did not tell you then. Now I wish to tell them, and ye seek not after them."
impossible to answer this, for me its a NO. You are talking about a fictional character.
I get that completely. And respect the answer you've given. It was a hypothetical. Just a thought experiment really.
I don't do hypothetical well, but here goes. Jesus is coming back for the progressives that put more value on human beings and the environment than self interest and greed, you know the meek.
If he tried to get into America or Europe he wouldn't be allowed in due to his lack of passport.
If he chilled in Israel he could find some people who do speak Aramaic but they would be Jewish so that would be awkward for everyone.
I guess he could find a job making wood stuff and spend his weekends volunteering at some Israeli hospital.
It would be amusing watching him try to do an YouTube channel and getting flamed "dude peacemakers don't get girls. You obviously don't know economics!!1"
Well the second coming does signal the end of the world...
It might of been a cool message 200 years ago. It's just bullshit today. It's the best way to make money... get a church and go after it.
