I think that's true. My idea is that emotions predate thinking, in evolutionary terms. Emotions are more similar to automatic responses you get in living things with less powerful brains than humans.
While we can get to control emotions through thinking, to an extent, the power of emotions is far greater than we like to admit. Easy example: when feeling intense fear, our "thinking" part can be almost shut down.
If only we were able to just think and not feel...
