The sun never set on the British Empire for, what ? A couple of hundred years ? Now they are an anemic has been. What we are seeing and experiencing now is the downward spiral of our formerly great experiment . Democracy. The trash bin we will leave our children is a disgrace. Deserved by our greedy, thieving selves for what we did to the Native Tribes. All things must pass. We will pass too. Let the roaches have their turn. They couldn't do a worse job than we have.

Yes ,though I don't think we really deserve the brexit fiasco.

Look at what happened to Tibet when the Chinese decided they wanted it if you want to consider what happens to nations of compassionate, non-aggressive people. People's competitive thinking are ultimately responsible for a lot.

Crazy islamic immigration is destroying western, classic liberal values.

A pessimistic world view, but cored with truth. it seems that 'all things must pass' is a truism, and that goes for societies as well, at least for those that lack harmony. When you think about it, if your body gets a sore, irritation, whatever, it constantly strives to repair itself and if it cant, then the physical stresses generated can be ultimately fatal. So it is with societies: inequity breeds discontent, discontent instability and instability reaction. So the downward spiral progresses until the society is dispossessed/displaced by another which is still on the upward part of its own societal evolution. More harmonic societies- And by that I mean societies that learn to get along with each other and adapt to their environment, seem to last a hell of a lot longer, such as the Australian Aborigines who are the longest surviving society known to have occupied the planet; about 50,000 years until 1770, when the genocide began.

I hope you're not mourning the passing of an invasive, exploitive empire.
I admire the British for peacefully allowing so many countries to regain their independence.

I like the idea that Britain peacefully allowed, but believe that to be so not the case- The Brits let go of what would have been too costly to hang onto- if the perceived economic advantage of not letting go had been matched with the power to retain, do you really believe that America, Canada, India etc would be independent now?

@StJohn That's why I said "so many," and not "all."

@Jlangston70 I live here in Northern Ireland its more complicated than you could imagine and costs a fortune.

I sometimes imagine what it would be like to observe humankind's history from a perspective outside of it where we could see the entire span of it; the rise and fall ... I suspect we'd be less judgemental toward any particular civilization. We're just too close to it now to size it up properly.

Empires rise and fall so yes, ours will too, and people have been taking other peoples' land for as long as there have been "other people". Someday, when we can not defend our land, someone else will take it from us. When it comes right down to it I don't think we're any better or worse than those who came before us or those who will come after. We compete for resources and to stay alive and we work within the culture and point in history that we're born into.

And when our civilization crumbles I'd like to think we could paraphrase Jimmy Buffett in describing it ...

Some of it's magic
And some of it's tragic
But we had a good life all the way
