O.M.G. guys!

Alright my 90-100% non-believers, do you use exclamations such as "oh my god," "thank god," "dear lord," or any variation of them? What about "bless you" if someone sneezes?

I generally take a page from Benders' book and say. "Oh your God." But I'm a geek and a futurama fan so there's that.

4

I readily engage in profanity and blasphemy. It's even more fun when you mix the two. It's my way of demonstrating contempt for the concept rather than the brain that holds it.

Same!

Sure, it is a cultural thing. I also say "Jesus fuck" probably at least as often as the above. Except for thank god. I rarely say that. I think you can be an agnostic or an atheist without being an asshole about it.

3

Sure why not. I also make references to my favorite cartoon characters on occasion.

3

I use them... it’s just words.

It’s hard to replace “Oh my God” in English language. Maybe “Holy smoke”, “”Jesus”, “wow”... Most are still religion related.

Language is influenced by religion, but to me it’s not a big problem. In Italian to express surprise/shock we use “mamma mia!” a lot. They are just expressions.

I use God very, very frequently in my exclamations. Same with shit, or some variation of it.

@SACatWalker No, I can't (won't) oblige. Sorry.

2

Yes, out of habit. I really don't care though.

jesus I'm coming

2

I go straight to "fuck this shit". Applies to almost anything. Tends to lighten the mood.

2

I have substitutes:
omg - holy crap on a graham cracker
sneezes - thanks for the germ shower
thank god - thanks spongebob and patrick
dear lord - hum the bugs bunny theme song

This had me rolling ?

It's a question that gets asked a lot on this site. When someone says, "Bless you" after I sneeze, I say, "Thank you."

1

"Oh My Gob!" Most people don't even notice and then the few that do think it's funny because they know I am an atheist. When someone sneezes I usually say "bless you my child".... I personally think it's funny and yes of course Blasphemous but for me, blasphemy carries the same weight as would calling a cartoon character bad names..... of course, I can be very rude but I try not to be unless it's someone who is very pushy. And those cases I tried to be very clear, as you are free to believe as you choose, I am free to disbelieve as I choose.

1

I say 'Oh my God!' all the time. It's just habit and language.

1

I have a really strong habit of saying "jesus christ" as a swear. I say it a lot. But I was raised christian, so I guess it has some kind of personal weight to it.

1

Sure, but I refer to myself, and I give my personal "bless you." lol

1

It's not compulsory to say anything when someone sneezes! It's just a habit. I tend to say 'Salud!'

Thanks for that new word. I like it and will use it instead of Gesundheit.

1

Nope. I say “oh my science” or if I’m being saucy “oh my Odin”; I do not say “bless you” when someone sneezes either. I’ve re-programmed my sayings to fit my mold a little better 😉

1

Yes I use them even though I never believed in god. It’s no different the saying holy shit. Just an expression

? holy shit

1

Yeah. Just out of habit. I don’t see what the big deal is. Just because I don’t believe in god means I have to change my cursing and slang? I don’t feel the need to shove my atheism in other’s faces. I feel like if I did that I would be making it very prominent that I was atheist and I would look like an attention whore.

I used to be an attention whore in my "angry atheist" days. It was always funny though, at least to me. Like if some sneezed I'd say "nothing happens when you die!" Or "its happy holidays!" Yeah I really put those 90 year old Walmart door greeters in their place.

1

Sure, and I might say mother fucker but I don't think the person actually fucks their mother. Please, word games are a waste of time

But word games are so much fun 😉

1

Godzundtheit is the German version.

1

Sure. I also say things like Thank Maud or Dear Sweet Baby Cheezits just as often though.

Jeebus Maud and Jessie is another adaptation I like.

No i don't use those expressions. I use god damn it more since I became atheist.

I tend to sware a lot, a tell of being frustrated with myself. I do have Tourette's but not the kind which makes one sware. So it is all on me. I think that the sware words of today will be the prayers people will use a thousand years from now. Unless people decide to do away with God altogether. Can't wait to see.

I clamp my mouth shut so that fuck does not slip out, otherwise I say Gesundheit.
