Roy Moore’s Brother Says Doug Jones Will Pay for What He’s Done in the Afterlife. Thoughts ?
paul1967 comments on Dec 18, 2017:
I didn't follow the news because I've lost a lot of trust in news outlets. I didn't get to vote because I don't live in Alabama, so I didn't bother investigating either candidate. I don't know what Ray Moore is guilty of or if he's guilty of anything. I would imagine that if a God cared about people, then we wouldn't have child rapists walking among us. An all-knowing God wouldn't allow a child to be raped and punish the rapist after death. It's insane to think that any God would stand by a child as he or she gets raped and then say figuratively to a child rapist, I'll allow this crime but at a price to be paid later. Is this really what people accept as an all-loving God?
I had several professors in college preach Christianity as if from a pulpit.
paul1967 comments on Dec 18, 2017:
I agree however I rather enjoyed exposing my 8th-grade government teachers ignorance of church-state separation whenever she would insist the students bow our heads at the start of each class. I got an "F" for not participating in this ritual. I was able to get the administration to change my grade. They gave me an "A," and then I insisted they change it to a "B" because a "B" was the grade I had earned.
Damn him! :)

Share your thoughts about NFL players kneeling during pre-game playing of national anthem.
paul1967 comments on Dec 17, 2017:
Those people who shame NFL players for taking a knee at the playing of our national anthem are slapping the face of every fallen veteran. They died so that, "We the People" have a protected right to protest, as long as, "We the People" keep it peaceful. I may not always agree with the cause as I often don't, but those individuals are within their right to take that position, and I vow to lay down my life to preserve their right to protest peacefully. I am a proud American, and this privilege is at the core of my pride. i
Quick question on views of Christmas.
paul1967 comments on Dec 17, 2017:
No, primarily because the meaning of Christmas has nothing to do with religion. Christians have just injected their God concept into a pagan solstice celebration. The Bible actually rejects the cutting down of a tree, decorating them with silver and gold. As you can see in Jeremiah 10:1-5 "1 Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2 Thus says the LORD: Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the Gentiles are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the peoples are futile; for one cuts a tree from the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. 4 They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with nails and hammers so that it will not topple. 5 They are upright, like a palm tree, and they cannot speak; they must be carried, because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, nor can they do any good.” Christians claim now that it has nothing to do with Christmas tree but rather it's talking about idolitry. To that claim I say, Gentiles weren't decorating trees and worshiping them as Gods, but maybe God didn't know that. Either way Christmas has nothing to do with Jesus or Christianity.
How many people actually think about this when they go to those xmas programs and see this ...

Coming from the lgbt community being leery of religion it's something that is almost second nature.
paul1967 comments on Dec 14, 2017:
I very much support the LGBT community so when I say this, please understand I don't agree with it. Religious people are indoctrinated from very early on to view your actions as evil. What they believe they're doing is saving your soul, so when they do inappropriate things like sending you a Bible as a Christmas gift you just have to understand in their way corrupt as it is the gesture is one of kindness. It's no different then when they say bless you. I wouldn't let those actions bother you.
Am I alone in wondering this?

A question for agnostics
paul1967 comments on Dec 13, 2017:
Technically, an agnostic is an atheist. These two words respond to slightly different questions. Knowledge vs. belief. An agnostic is an individual who claims, the knowledge of the subject of God is unanswerable, but they lack any confidence in the claim. An Atheist is someone who doesn't believe in a God. The distinction is the Atheist isn't addressing an application of knowledge nor are they saying that a God is not possible. It's that they're unconvinced one does.

paul1967 comments on Dec 13, 2017:

What’s some good atheist books that you recommend?
paul1967 comments on Dec 13, 2017:
I'm a big fan of Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris books but hands down the best book on God is, God: The Failed Hypothesis: by Victor J. Stenger. Stenger lays out the evidence from cosmology, particle physics and quantum mechanics showing that the universe appears exactly as it should if there is no creator. It's written so that laypeople can learn something, but it's not so technical that the reader is distracted by scientific explanations way above their heads. He kept it simple enough that you will understand it, but challenging enough to keep you interested.

Infants are outside of any concept of good and evil. The question, is humanity inherently evil is a complicated question, one which requires a proper definition which I've never seen, nor can I devise one. She then hits me lightly on the leg with her cane, saying "tell the devil I'll be coming for him and you too. We say our goodbye, and we never discuss her beliefs.

What is truth?
paul1967 comments on Oct 31, 2017:
What is a truth? For most of us, it's our minds accepting and rejecting information based on things we already believe, and most of our foundations that make up our beliefs are dictated to us at a young age. Some people are open to being challenged and open to, reevaluation of long-held beliefs when new information is presented, while others will rationalize away anything that threatens warmly held beliefs. What is, truth is a good question but I would also like to understand why people believe things are true when all the facts available to us show that it is not.

Blaming God.
paul1967 comments on Oct 24, 2017:
I have discussed this concept with other theists who claim I really do believe but accused me of being mad at God and blaming God for not giving me a better life. I reply in patient responses. My life isn't without regret but of those things I regret in life all are my doing. God doesn't exist for me to blame nor would I if he did. When I have wronged someone, it's my job to atone for that not through a God but through actions like an apology to that individual that I have hurt. These are things secular people do, and Christians sometimes fail to understand.
Do you actively represent Atheists (in person or on the web)?
paul1967 comments on Oct 24, 2017:
I debate publically in churches and online. There are a surprising number of pastors, minister and fathers wanting to discuss any number of subjects. I started by mailing out flyers years ago thinking I wouldn't get any to respond but I get calls all the time. They invite me to debate anything from evolution to the age of the Earth and of course morality which is my least preferred topic, but all of it no matter what subject is brought up goes to morality and how Atheist cope with having no foundation for morality. Which we do, it's just ours is societal and it evolves.
Athiest and death
paul1967 comments on Oct 23, 2017:
The answer to question #2 first with several answers: 1) Give your body to science. 2) Make it clear in your will how you want your body to be handled at the time of death and make sure the executor of the will is someone you trust. 3) You're dead you won't exist in any real sense, let your family members do what they will with your body, especially if you love them and as your last gift to them you make them feel more comforted by your passing. Answer #1 I just lost my father about four months ago, he was the man that saved me from indoctrination, and we hadn't spoken more than a handful of times in his last 15 years of his life. I missed any chance of saying goodbye. What is most important is what you do before their passing, make that count as best you can. Once the go, you morn and move on. Don't get too bent out of shape over the good intentions of your theist relative pretending he's in a better place.

Can science and religion realistically be reconciled?
paul1967 comments on Oct 21, 2017:
I used to say they were two separate things, but I discovered they are the same in the initial approach. They both ask the same questions, but here is the divide, science won't answer with here is the answer until the evidence is in and when evidence is inconclusive or not available the answer is we don't know. Religions will always insert God to all answers unknown, and when the answer becomes known, they fight back and deny for a while and then move the goal post again.

When I asked my boss why I was passed up, he said it had to do with the fact that I didn't have kids. When I pointed out Allen (the guy who got the promotion) didn't have kids either all he said was "Well there you go" which meant nothing other than we're done get out of my office.

It's programming, not stupidity. I have a lot of very religious friends, many of them are considerably smarter than the average Atheist and more educated. Trust me when I say it's not an act. They have a way of blocking out certain aspects of reality. I call it zombie brain because they act like that part of their mind has been eaten away, and they want to eat that part of my brain out. The anger card is just another taught mechanism they use to justify why I don't believe.

How do people react when you refer to their beliefs as a mythology?
paul1967 comments on Oct 20, 2017:
Most responses show that it would be insulting but that's because most people don't know what the word myth means. It doesn't refer to whether something is true or false. A myth is a traditional story consisting of events that are ostensibly historical, though often supernatural, explaining the origins of a cultural practice or natural phenomenon. The word "myth" is derived from the Greek word mythos, which simply means "story". Mythology can refer either to the study of myths or to a body or collection of myths. Myth can mean 'sacred story', 'traditional narrative' or 'tale of the gods'. A myth can also be a story to explain why something exists. Human cultures' mythologies usually include a cosmogonical or creation myth, concerning the origins of the world, or how the world came to exist. The active beings in myths are generally gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines, or animals and plants. Most myths are set in a timeless past before recorded time or beginning of the critical history. A myth can be a story involving symbols that are capable of multiple meanings. A myth is a sacred narrative because it holds religious or spiritual significance for those who tell it. Myths also contribute to and express a culture's systems of thought and values, such as the myth of gremlins invented by aircraft technicians during World War II to avoid apportioning blame. Myths are often, stories that are currently understood as being exaggerated or fictitious.
Dear God, I know you are very busy: your inbox must be quite full of prayers.

That's hilarious. Did you write that or did you pull it off of a website? Either way it was well written
My experience shows me that religious people use their religion to provide "floor values" and others...
paul1967 comments on Oct 20, 2017:
The sad thing is that the people you describe as holding "ceiling values" are more true to their Christian faith than the others. The Westboro Baptist Church stands on solid ground within their religious interpretations.
Do you think Muslims will outnumber Christians?
paul1967 comments on Oct 20, 2017:
It certainly looks like it. Something I read says it has less to do with converting people and more to do with birth rates.
Are you attracted to the bad boys or naughty girls?
paul1967 comments on Oct 20, 2017:
I've been with both nice girls and naughty. Neither works for me a little of both is what I look for
What US political party do you align with?
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
I vote for the best candidate unless I have no information and then I vote Dem.
What strikes you with awe?
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
My awe is waking up before sunrise pushing my boat out onto the lake with my fishing pole, laying down on my back looking up at the stars as the boat gently sways. I think I feel big looking out on the vastness knowing that billions of years ago my atoms were spread out for endless lightyears and came together to form me, and after me, they will spread out again to form an almost endless number of other things.
As an agnostic or theist, do you fear death? If so, why?
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
I fear, dying far more than death. I accept that my mind will stop and everything that I am is to be left behind in a pile of chemicals returning to the Earth.
Evangelicals in Government
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
I fully agree with Paul628 on this. We have the numbers to stop it but we also can suffer from apathy and a lack of enthusiasm. We divide ourselves when our representative loses we give up or refuse to back the winner. Republicans don't suffer from this divide as often as we do.
Ever get calls from scammers?
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
I get more scammers on dating sites. Not this one but plenty on all the other ones
What is your opinion on male circumcision?
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
The bigger issue for me is doing it to children. Let them do it if they want. People think it's more sanitary, well that's what soap is for.
Do you object to the term "RELIGITARDS" or do you think it appropriate?
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
Well first off it's not a respectful thing to say. I'll mock your beliefs in a heartbeat if you bring them to me. What I won't do is mock you. Or in this case them. There is nothing gained by insulting a person ever. There is plenty gained by demonstrating why someone's beliefs are irrational. I can't think of usefulness in injuring anyone on a personal level.
What are your thoughts on "Pantheism"
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
If someone says I'm a Pantheist, I think there's a person that has rejected organized religion but doesn't want to give him/herself over to rational thought. A Pantheist is an agnostic who labels the universe as a God not recognizing the baggage brought on by doing that. I think calling the Universe God is silly when the word Universe describes it just fine.
Does "have a blessed day" bother you?
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
It's a device Christians use to communicate to another person, I'm trustworthy because I follow Christ. Which is a load of crap because I instantly trust them less. However, I take as a saying and it doesn't bother me
Marriage equality
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
It's an easy yes. I should have clicked, Not Informed Enough On The Issue Need More Time To Research because I don't know the definition of marriage equality in Australia, but here in the US, it's an easy yes.
Would you call yourself a sci-fi/fantasy fan?
paul1967 comments on Oct 19, 2017:
I enjoy some Sci-Fi - The original & next Gen Star Trek, Stargate, Star Wars. In that order.
I am Secular Pro-Life. Here are my secular arguments to which I'd like you to respond.
paul1967 comments on Oct 18, 2017:
I'm pro-choice. A woman has the right to control her body. If that means ending a life inside her body, then that's within her rights. When science has a solution where that life can be safely removed from her body and allowed to develop naturally outside of her womb, I will support the right to life.
Should public nudity be legal?
paul1967 comments on Oct 18, 2017:
There is nothing wrong with nudity, but I for one am thankful for clothes. Should it be illegal to be nude in public? No, I guess not, but I won't be investing energy trying to reverse it.
Okay, this is about lgbt identity, but also about religiosity.
paul1967 comments on Oct 18, 2017:
Honestly, it would surprise me more if they didn't. You need to understand that saying "I'm religious" does not in any way mean they support Christianity or Islam. They may believe in an afterlife or ghosts, or they may believe in Jesus and ignore the parts they don't like. Almost all Christians do that. They pick what they want and ignore the rest. That's why Christianity still exists. If Christians had to believe the entirety of their book very few of them could or would do it, I suspect.
On a scale from 1-8 how much of a militant atheist are you?
paul1967 comments on Oct 18, 2017:
I could have selected multiple categories. 2-6 fit me. This really isn't a scale of how militant I am it's what parameters match my idea of what atheism is to me and what I'm willing to do.
I call my weed 'The Quran', as burning that shit will get you stoned :-)
paul1967 comments on Oct 18, 2017:
I like it. I haven't smoked weed in over 30 years. I hear it's pretty powerful compared to what we had in the late 70's and 80's.

paul1967 comments on Oct 18, 2017:
I smoke, and it's the most idiotic habit anyone can develop, but I enjoy it so much. It's my escape from anxiety. I'm working hard to stop.
