Sure, why not? Religion, after all, does not necessarily have to be about belief in supernatural forces or beings. The word "religion" comes from the Italian "religgio," meaning re-linking, as in finding the (lost) connection between one's self and his/her/their cosmic origins. In this sense, science can be considered a form of religion.

The religious juror who punishes a defendant for not swearing to God is also likely to believe the most outlandish and incredible lies from some sanctimonious grifter (e.g. televangelist) with designs on their bank account. A storm came up from the side opposite to where they were climbing, and high winds literally blew them off the mountain. One fell (slid) over 900 feet, hit a patch of rocks on the way, and got pretty banged up. After he got out of the hospital, he was in a wheelchair for many months.

The corporations are always going to try and maximize and privatize profits while shifting the liabilities (cleanup costs) on the public. That is a given. With AI, the consequence could be something that no corporation, no nation, no species can remediate. The danger here is an existential one. We are opening Pandora's box with AI. A village full of irate citizens armed with pitchforks could take down Frankenstein's monster. AI could make the villagers armed with AR-15s take themselves down. We already have climate change threatening human civilization. It will take cooperation and ingenuity to get past that. All the reporting I am seeing on the Hamas attack is using adjectives like "barbaric," and/or "heinous," or nouns like "atrocity" to describe it. I am a progressive lefty, and I agree with those assessments. So I don't know what you are talking about. The other day, you intimated that I was antisemitic or a Nazi sympathizer merely because I pointed out that the long run of troubles in the area stems from an original sin (i.e. Jews kicking Moslems out of their homes, and continued illegal building of Jewish settlements on Palestinian lands). Now you attack the Left at large with a spurious accusation, and you don't provide any examples or evidence to back up your claim. If I remember correctly, in a previous thread you called for the total annihilation of Hamas. But you didn't say how you would do that without killing a lot of non-Hamas Palestinian civilians. Did it ever occur to you that many of us on the left are capable of thinking ahead a few steps; that we can see the potential for an Israeli overreaction causing a massive humanitarian crisis? By the way, I would lament such a crisis not only out of sympathy for innocent Palestinians, but also because it would hurt Israel too. I would like to see Israel survive and succeed as a nation. I don't think mistreating others advances their cause.

Flyingsaucesir comments on Oct 28, 2023:
Hope can help create a positive attitude, which in turn can help make the best of a bad situation. So there's that. On the other hand, one study I heard about found that people in hospital who knew people were praying for them did worse (failed to improve or got sicker or died) while those who did not know of any prayers for them did better. All I know is if I were the patient, and I knew people were praying for my recovery, I would take that as a signal that I was really, desperately sick. And I would also have zero faith that the prayers would cause a supernatural intervention on my behalf. So for me, prayer would probably have a net negative impact on my mental state and thus not be helpful to my physical state.

The thing about CO2 is that a little bit goes a long way. The meme is wrong about the current level; it's not 400 ppm, it's 419 ppm. And that's about 70 ppm over the highest level there ever was in the last 850,000 years. And that level is rapidly going up due to human activity (burning fossil fuels). The meme is also wrong about the source of most CO2 today. Our fossil fuel emissions are currently about 100 times greater than the biggest natural source, which is volcanoes. Finally, the warming effect of all our pollution has been clearly established. Every decade is now warmer than the last. Up until very recently, the warming effect of excess CO2 has been masked. The oceans have absorbed 90% of the excess heat, and half the excess CO2. But as the oceans warm, they absorb heat less readily. And they become more acidic. This threatens marine food webs, which should concern us. After all, 30% of the protein humans consume comes from seafood. But I digress. I don't want to close without calling out the stupid, irresponsible, complacency of posts and memes like this one. To the extent that people believe such brain rot, and think we can carry on with business as usual, our future (especially that of younger people and future generations) is increasingly blighted.

Weighing up the evidence for the Historical Jesus - The University of Sydney
Flyingsaucesir comments on Feb 4, 2024:
Just as it is impossible to prove Jesus existed, so it is impossible to prove that he did not. (Notice how similar this is to the question of God's existence, which likewise can neither be proven nor disproven.) Happily, we free thinkers are not obligated to plant a flag on either hill. Anyone who does just falls into a trap. But there is an attractive solution: simply consider the problem in terms of probabilities. What is the likelihood that Jesus actually existed? Tot up the evidence, and put a percentage number on it. Let that number be greater than 0% and less than 100%. Studiously avoid the numbers 0% and 100%. If you do this, you can't go wrong. 🙂 Example: I rate the probability that an Aramaic-speaking carpenter from Nazareth who preached love and forgiveness and was named Jesus at about 75%. None of the stuff I mentioned above stretches the imagination. It's all plausible. If you insist that I must include all the supernatural malarky associated with the Jesus legend, i.e. miracles, resurrection, etc., then I put the probability equal to that of God's existence, i.e. much closer to zero. Say, 0.000000001%. 😂

As a little kid growing up in the 1960s, in an all-White suburb of Los Angeles County, I frequently heard racist jokes about Black people. When my family moved to a rural area of San Diego County, my new school had a few Black, Mexican, and Native American students. I will never forget the horror I felt when I witnessed a White boy in my 8th grade class, a kid I played baseball with, beat up another classmate, a Black girl. I can still see in my mind's eye his fist mashing her face, the blood flowing, the purple lumps rising under livid brown skin. Why did he do it? Because she was Black. No other reason. A lot of other kids were there, laughing and egging him on. Some were other guys I played ball with. I quit the team not long after that. Some 45 years later, I was serving as Clerk of the Course at a high school track meet. The school had, as was customary, hired a neutral party, a professional starting judge, to run the meet. After the last race, I had occasion to chat with the judge, who happened to be a Black man. He told me he was from Ohio, and was looking forward to going back there. In fact, he couldn't wait to get out of California. He said he had never run into so much racial hostility and discrimination in Ohio as he found in California. I said I was sorry to hear it. I even expressed surprise. You see, I had buried my memories of 8th grade, and had bought into the myth that we had developed into a better, color-blind society. But we haven't. And now a stinking orange turd, an adjudicated rapist, a fraudster, liar, and multiple felon who spouts racist dog whistles and channels Adolf Hitler, is the presumptive Republican Party nominee for president of the United States. We still have a long way to go.

🐂💩🐂💩🐂💩🐂💩🐂💩 There are 670 units in the Zeckendorf Towers. Since they were completed in 1987, thousands of people have lived there, including some who had connections to Donald Trump, the Koch brothers, Vladimir Putin, and Elon Musk, among other celebrities. It is just as likely that one or more of these people had a hand in Mrs. Prychodko's death as George Soros or Anthony Weiner. That likelihood is somewhere near zero, by the way, since the lady was involved in an acrimonious divorce with her husband, with whom she was fighting over millions of dollars at the time she was murdered. Once again @1patriot promotes a wacko conspiracy theory and earns the red seal of disapproval. This post is pure bullshit! 😂😂😂
A 19-Year-Old Died After Taking ‘Gas Station Heroin’.

I saw a piece about this on television news the other day. The fact is, dietary supplements are not regulated as strictly as drugs. Maybe they should be, but it would take an act of Congress to make it so. And increasingly, ever since the Reagan administration, when Ronnie famously said, "The scariest words I ever heard were 'I'm from the government, and I'm here to help,'" Republicans have groused about and bridled at "government overreach." And now the presumptive GOP nominee for president of the United States openly says that he intends to dismantle the regulatory function of government, among other things. So good luck regulating "gas station heroin," or "bath salts," or greenhouse gases, or rail tanker cars, or anything else as long as Republicans are in power.
