Welcome to the Community

Agnostic.com is a non-profit and non-prophet community for people who are naturally good without any gods. Our members have a wide range of views about what the site should be about. For some, it's a place to nurture humanist or non-religious principles. For others, it's a place to recover from a religious past or to reaffirm one's atheism.

We hope to provide a safe place for people to share their thoughts and opinions, get involved in secular causes, keep up with news, and even meet others.

Note: we share members and content (e.g., groups and posts) with our sister site at https://humanist.com. Members can hide their profile from agnostic.com on the bottom of their settings page.

We want to be defined by principles and not what we don't believe.

The following are core principles * we agree with:

  1. Be open-minded and be willing to alter your beliefs with new evidence.
  2. Strive to understand what is most likely to be true, not to believe what you wish to be true.
  3. The scientific method is the most reliable way of understanding the natural world.
  4. Every person has the right to control of their body.
  5. A god is not necessary to be a good person or to live a full and meaningful life.
  6. Be mindful of the consequences of all your actions and recognize that you must take responsibility for them.
  7. Treat others as you would want them to treat you, and can reasonably expect them to want to be treated. Think about their perspective.
  8. We have the responsibility to consider others, including future generations.
  9. There is no one right way to live.
  10. Leave the world a better place than you found it.
* These guidelines can be found in the book 'Atheist Mind, Humanist Heart' by Lex Bayer and John Figdor

Agnosticism is the view that the existence of God is unknown or unknowable. Atheism is simply living life without any gods. Most people who have one view, also has the other.
Want to help?

Agnostic.com is a non-profit organization that doesn’t charge anything for the use of the site nor do we take donations. Our funding comes from private individuals who want to promote a positive image of atheists, agnostics, humanists and other secular views. Read more on our FAQ page.

We would love it if you could promote this community to people you know. You can use the links here if you want to see who signs up. Thanks!

If you want to make donations to similar causes we suggest the following organizations. While we are independent, we have made significant contributions ourselves.

American Humanist Association
The AHA strives to bring about a progressive society where being “good without a god” is an accepted way to live life. They accomplish this through the defense of civil liberties and secular governance, by outreach to the growing number of people without religious belief or preference, and through a continued refinement and advancement of the humanist worldview.

Freedom From Religion Foundation
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is a watchdog organization working to keep church and state separate and has as had many significant legal accomplishments nationwide. They have taken and won more challenges of the "faith-based initiative" than any other national group to date. The national Foundation has brought more than 85 First Amendment lawsuits since 1977, and keeps several Establishment law challenges in the courts at all times.

American Atheists
Since 1963, American Atheists has protected the absolute separation of religion from government and raised the profile of atheists and atheism in our nation’s public and political discourse. American Atheists appears to take a more adversarial stance that religious views are wrong than the other two organizations.

Community Guidelines
A key part of this site is the ability for members to post questions, comments, and links. As we want to ensure that this platform is inclusive and discussions lively yet productive, we would like members to consider the following guidelines. Help make this an intelligent place for discussion and it will be.
  1. Remember that people come to their own truth differently.
  2. We welcome debate and dissent but personal attacks, persistent trolling and similar abuse will not be tolerated.
  3. Avoid profanity, vulgarity, etc. Arguments have more impact if they are polite and respectful.
  4. Recognise that there is a difference between criticising a politician, government, organisation, religion or belief and attacking people.
  5. Keep comments as short as possible while still getting your point accross.
  6. Stay on topic. If you want to create a new topic thread, simply post it using the "Post" button at the top
  7. If you post a link to another site, please make sure that it's relevant to the discussion.
  8. Whenever possible, do a search first to see if the topic has already been posted. Feel free to comment on the original post as your comment will show up at the top of the list when sorted.
  9. Don't post anything commercial. If you think there is something that the community wants to buy, send it to us first :)

Please note that we reserve the right to remove any post for any reason. Obviously, we want to keep the discussion as open as possible but we have limits. While we do allow members who say they're religious to join, we not allow any religious proselytisation. We will also remove any content that may put us in legal jeopardy, such as potentially libellous or defamatory postings, or material posted in potential breach of copyright.

Two Websites in One
We share members and content (e.g., groups and posts) with our sister site at https://humanist.com. That is, we have a single database and simply adjust the message slightly for the two domains. Humanism is a set of principles to live a better life and to help reduce suffering. Learn more! Members can hide their profile from humanist.com on the bottom of their settings page.
