This dude I met today was super lean. His muscles were highly defined. So I asked him questions, naturally. He was happy to share his "secrets". He said all he ate was chicken breasts and salad, that's all. He said this was only within last 2 months, and he was 52 years old. He was about to go into a bodybuilding competition, I believe. He said he used to work out for hours, and never achieved that definition. He said it was primarily diet. I kept badgering him with more questions. Eventually admitted to eating complex carbs such as sweet potatoes and brown rice. He doesn't count calories, he only watches what he eats. Today he had 4 chicken breasts. He only works out an hour now. The diet made the difference, not more time in the gym. He said his body is burning fat at a high metabolism, and in ketosis. He drinks lots of water. He doesn't want his body to retain water, so he stays away from carbs and sodium to show more definition. Do you think the fasting still works like those other idiots said? Lol

I was born with body fat and no diet or work regime EVER got it off my butt and thighs.

I learned to live with it - accepted the fact I'll never have legs that go from here to there and back again. LOL

I really think alot of it is how succeptable a person is to the advertizing and body image crap projected on the public by the clothing industry or ANYone with something to sell. Everything for sale is made to be sexy and desirable.

A person with a fairly healthy outlook doesn't go the extreme. Clearly the American diet of fast food and processed food has health implications.

Since age 21, I have been regularly weightlifting, hiking, backpacking, running, swimming, downhill skiing, cross country skiing and stretching. Endorphins are addictive. Four years ago, I quit downhill skiing because I want my knees for life.

In 2017, I set a personal record by hiking 326 miles with 63,210 feet of elevation gain. Love spectacular mountain vistas, high alpine lakes, white glaciers and jagged mountain peaks.

My mother was considered an exercise fanatic and a health nut. Mom raised us on low fat, healthy food. I took it to a new level. Thanks, Mom!

At age 22, my youngest sister got skin cancer. I was 27. That was a wakeup call and the last year I had a tan. Since then, I have worn sunscreen every day, year-round, on my face and neck, and a wide-brimmed hat while hiking and gardening. That's why my skin looks good.

So, I have never smoked, avoid alcohol and never drink soda pop. Also, don't eat deep fried food, fast food, hamburgers, donuts or pizza: all the high fat, processed, sugary junk foods that Americans love. I enjoy organic fruits and vegetables as much as possible.

My dad died of cancer at age 51. I was 24. Immediately I eliminated from my diet preserved meats with cancer-causing nitrites and nitrates. Bacon, ham, pepperoni, salami, etc. Once a year, I enjoy a rib-eye steak when finding morel mushrooms in the spring. Sauté the morels with olive oil, butter and garlic: WOW!

Instead of buying processed food, I cook from scratch at home.

Bottom line- a healthy lifestyle gets results. Exercise and enjoy eating healthy, whole foods. Protect your skin from the sun. Drink lots of water. Be optimistic and upbeat. Have fun! It shows.

NOTE- With a classic Ectomorph body type, I have trouble gaining muscle. But all that hiking developed some leg muscles. Hooray! It's fun to see new angles while shaving my legs.

@BeerAndWine
For the past 35 years, I have been making (kneading) whole wheat breads. My favorite is oatmeal whole wheat bread. This is a staple of my diet.

Thank you for your compliment. "You have the body of a 20 year-old," men exclaim when they see me naked.

Damn, that back! 😉

@Loud_Love

Thank you! I cannot see my back muscles. That's why I asked a friend to take pictures of my back.

@LiterateHiker - Or you could just ask for a massage..

He will be sorry later in life when his kidneys fail and all that muscle turns to fat and falls to his waste.Been there Allmost did not get into Marines because my neck was to large and my arms did not fit in shirt sleeves.

I doubt he'll regret it - reaping the benefits of being a "specimen of a man". So, he dies in his 50s, having a lifetime of friendships and amazing sex.. I'm not so sure he's gonna regret anything.. I, personally, would die happy at 55 and LIVE, than live to a crotchety old 85.. Just my opinion..

@Beach_slim - I'm not sure, are you agreeing or presenting a counter-argument?

@Beach_slim - Agreed, the idea that fat turns to muscle is myth. What happens, is as you break down and repair your muscles in a routine manner (weight training), your metabolism goes up, and as your body tries to repair the muscle tissue, extra fat is burned. Yeah Man, I agree.. You gotta consider your sources..

@Beach_slim I got news for you it does when yoiu are handicapped and can no longer maintain an exercise program. I have been on a 1000 cal diet for three years and have losted 56 lbs. Believe me it is not easy. Metabolism is slow kidneys are bad and the same occurs with my lifting buddies.Lifting can be a very unforgiving sport.

I was in a health food store one day , when I saw an extremely thin woman at the cash register . Later as I checked out , I commented to the cashier about her . He said she had put herself on a brown rice and tea only diet , which they did NOT recommend . Later I read an article about her .This diet initially lead to her going blind , then to her death . Yeah , I could see her muscles because she had no body fat , but in my opinion , the price was way too high .
