I made the same simple hoop tunnel from plastic electrical conduit and covered with plastic. I recommend using special greenhouse plastic that will last much longer and transmit more light. You can buy greenhouse plastic online. This will not stay warm much below freezing at night without adding heat - but it can help to extend your growing season in spring and fall. I still use hoop tunnels on some of my garden beds.

I used hoops on my grow boxes in the desert, using agricultural cloth instead of plastic. It totally eliminated the aphids and whiteflies, both of which were awful the first year, before Ken Riley (who used to be a member here) told me about it, and protected the plants on the few nights that there would be frost from mid-December to mid-January. Summers are too hot for food to grow, but I did have a basil “bush” that made it through two winters. You have to keep it trimmed well, and since I usually went away for several weeks in summer, all the other years it died off. Not an expensive loss. I had good luck with tomatoes, when everyone else had given up on them. The lettuces and squash were wonderful. I even grew eggplant for the first time ever! Once, I grew sweet potatoes (in a big plastic tub with drainage holes poked in it) from and organic one that had sprouted…they produced the prettiest flowers…and a LOT of sweet potatoes.
