I don’t think you really understood what I meant ....funereal music has its place and is appropriate to the occasion. What I was referring to is music that is not meant to be for that purpose but tends to be relentlessly downbeat, dirge like and thoroughly depressing nevertheless!

I was making fun of what you'd written. Sorry but there is a very big laughing streak that flows through me. That said the absolute Pathos that runs through the irony of Purcell writing it for Mary yet dying shortly after and it being played at his funeral.
