Now we are getting to the important part. Unfortunately the reason that Fredrick Fleet didn't see the iceberg until it was only 500yds out wasn't discovered until just a few years ago. When you look into a hot air mass things look like they shimmy. When you look into a cold air mass the cold air raises the horizon, hiding the berg from Fredrick Fleet until it was only 500yd.s out. Now this is why the Titanic sank and who's at fault. Officer of the deck Murdock got scared and choked. He called for hard to port, to try to go around the berg. If he had paid attention during sea trials he would have known the iceberg was way to close and there was no way in hell Titanic was going to make it around the berg. During sea trials they discovered it took Titanic a half a mile for Titanic to turn or stop. One bone head move wasn't enough for Murdock so he called for full astern. At this time Titanic was doing about 20 knots just shy of full speed which considering there was no water at the base of the berg to see, and no moon to reflect off the top of the bergs to see probably wasn't a real good idea either. That dumb idea is on Smith though. With the momentum Titanic had, calling for full astern on top of hard to port aimed the right side of Titanic right at the berg. Officer of the deck Murdock made 2 bad calls and sank Titanic. If he could have pulled his head out of his ass for one minute and called full stop or full astern, and hit the berg head on, Titanic would have had a great dent in the bow, but wouldn't have sunk.
