At 11:40 pm tonight on the same date and the same day of the week, Titanic sideswipes a iceberg 100ft. tall ripping more holes in the starboard side of Titanic, than the ship could survive. Titanic could survive 4 bulkheads breached out of the first 6, but not 5. In my opinion you do nothing. If Murdock had thought about it before making the bonehead move of trying to swerve a ship 883ft. long, knowing the berg was just 500yd.s out and it takes a half mile for Titanic to turn, and called for full speed astern, Titanic could have made New York with no more than a great big dent in the bow, and possibly lost a few firemen(their quarters were in the bow). Everybody else would have survived, and Titanic, after some repairs, would have sailed again.
To me, the real tragedy of Titanic is the lifeboats could hold 1176 people, and since it was reported the ocean was like glass you could have put more people in without risking overboard sinking. Each boat had a capacity of 65 people, Carpathia picked up 703 survivors. One lifeboat had 12 people in it, and none of them was filled to capacity. The reason why is because they thought if they went back to pick-up people in the water, there would be so many people trying to get in the lifeboats they would be swamped. So they sat there in their lifeboats and watched Titanic sink and listened to all the people in the water screaming for help for about 20 min.s until they froze to death in the cold water. If the lifeboats had been filled to capacity and maybe a few more, a good 500 more people could have survived. To me that is the real tragedy of Titanic, not that 1500 died, but 500 died that shouldn't have.
