There were 2 inquires made about Titanic. A senate inquiry in the US that started the day after the Carpathia docked in New York. A senator smith was standing on the dock waiting for J. Bruce Ismay, managing director of White Star Lines, who was vilified for not going down with the ship, with subpoenas because the Senator was afraid they would get on another ship back to England, immediately after docking. It lasted 16 days. The British inquiry started as soon as J. Bruce Ismay and crew got back to England. It lasted 34 days. Neither inquiry gave a definitive answer why Titanic sank or exactly who was to blame. Captain Stanley Lord of the ship "California" was also vilified for not coming to aid Titanic and was cleared only a few years ago when it was discovered that cold air masses made things off in the distance look considerably smaller than they actually were. Captain Rostron of the Carpathia was called a hero for turning his ship around and going full blast to rescue Titanic survivors.
