This is especially pertinent to remembering dreams. Or perhaps something that comes to you in the "angel hour" before you're fully awake. It begins to fade during the morning, and is often gone by the afternoon.

I once woke up my now ex-wife to tell her a joke I heard in a dream, she laughed and we went back to sleep. When we got up later, she asked me to remind her what the joke was and neither of us could bring it to recall. Which makes me wonder how many great scenarios authors have dreamt of and somehow failed to put into ink.

(sigh) It's happened to me several times. I try to take a note now, no matter how simple it seems to remember. Having a notes app readily available on my phone is a big help.
