Are you at peace with the inevitable, endless non-existence that is coming?
273kelvin comments on Jun 10, 2020:
Death and taxes, not much you can do about either of them. I don't buy into the big rock candy mountain so when I die that's it, full stop. There is no point getting down on my knees and praying to some mythical being like the running man in the twin towers, it is a futile effort. There is one ...
273kelvin replies on Jun 10, 2020:
@Radu No, you don't get it. You have to repeat exactly what you have done...forever. So if your life is shit then you would curse that entity and call it a demon. If your life is good then its an angel and all the shades of grey that lie in-between. So if you`re in a shit relationship, job, place, etc, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT because this life of yours might as well be an eternity. Its the only one you know you are gonna get. Now that does not necessarily mean some hedonistic/nihilistic self-destructive romp. It could be something creative or altruistic that makes you happy. But the point is to be happy. The idea of an endless loop of your life just throws the phrase "I don't ever wanna be doing this again" into perspective. The running man is a phenomenon I have seen before. I first saw it on an old newsreel where this US navy guy still had a hold of an airship rope. The thing took off and he with it but then he lost his grip and fell from the sky. As he plummeted, the guy starts running like he was being chased by a tiger. Part of a literal fight/flight response I am sure but chilling to see him flail like Scooby Do to his inevitable doom. To me, prayer is just that, useless and futile. A damn waste of good drinking time and so is any talk about it not being so. https://youtu.be/FOM2ZlcOYdw

@dermot235 As you said, sex and marriage are two separate issues. I merely pointed to the hypocrisy of being able to charge a minor as an adult, whilst holding them not responsible for their own sexual actions. This is a very emotive subject and nobody wants to go down the paedo route but IMHO 18 is far too high a benchmark. As I stated in the UK its 16 and I and about 90% of the people I have asked said they had sex before that age. If you set the bar too high, then all you are going to get is fails and that makes criminals out of too many people.

There is no patriotism, honour, or respect if the act is mandatory. It would be as worthless as a forced salute from a conscripted soldier or a "Yes Massa" from a slave. As for "at work", one of the few good things that the celebrity culture can give us is a platform to bring issues to light. I recall Mohamed Ali refusing to fight in Nam and many other instances where celebs have used their job as a platform. As for you being fired, would that happen if any of your colleagues wore a crucifix? Maybe if you wore your agnostic.com t-shirt (when you get it)? Perhaps you might respect the protest a little more if you walked a little Kaepernicks shoes. Just to help that somewhat, may I paste part of the third verse to that anthem was he required to stand for. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Gallows humor is making light but does not necessarily diminish the enormity or tragedy of a situation. It can be simply a coping mechanism that allows us to carry on without so heavy a burden. (I heard from a Holocaust survivor that they used to tell jokes in the camps.) But here is a more recent example: "When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my uncle Bert and not screaming in terror like his passengers". That joke was written by a comic that had mental health issues. It was in response to an actual news item from S. Africa. The thought of all those poor people was driving him into depression and the joke his only way to relieve it. Most of us are stuck at home with bugger all to do. Humor is essential to get by. This one came to me via a vicar of places at the end of his online service: "Finally I would ask you all to congratulate the prime minister Boris Johnson on the birth of his sixth child. Please also note that this only counts his children that have been born in a hospital. The real numbers may be much higher."

@FrayedBear I did put it on here but here goes again. My fiance was gorgeous. A tall slim Italian beauty with flashing green eyes. The only trouble was her younger sister. She was always making eyes at me., bending down so I could see her ample boobs or her knickers underneath the skimpy clothes she always wore. The two weeks before the wedding. She came round to our new house whilst her sister was out. (It was something about seating plans). Then she gave it to me straight. "I really fancy you and if you feel the same then I will be naked upstairs. It will only happen this one time before you marry my sister, so it's up to you" It did not take me long to decide what to do but as I left the house for my car I was greeted by a shotgun holding dad, her mom., my fiance, and all the rest of the family. Dad put down his weapon and hugged me as did all the rest. Including the sexy sister who had come back down. Then her father said "Congratulations, my son you have passed the test. Welcome to the family" And the moral of this tale? Always keep your condoms in the car

273kelvin replies on Apr 22, 2020:
@SeaGreenEyez I would certainly recommend universal health care but it is not without its own inherent problems. One major one encountered by our NHS is that funding is a political decision. Given that it is a bottomless pit in regards to how much it can use. The lines that would be commercially drawn in the US become the province of whichever political party is in power. One reason that the UK spends a lot less than the US is that we have been underfunding ours for over a decade. (Tory austerity) If you look at our mortality rate during this pandemic, it is around 12% of those admitted to hospital compared to 6.5 in the US. This is because we were running very close to capacity before this thing came. For the most part, it works reasonably well. I don't have any trouble getting a doctor's appointment. He sends me for any tests he thinks I may be due. Friends with long term conditions get their meds okay. It is mostly hospital waiting lists for elective treatments like hip replacements and some like cancer where the system will struggle. Mental healthcare is also quite poor.

Firstly, if wishing made it so? there would not be enough lottery wins to go round. Secondly, let us assume a conservative wet dream. Trump and Boris really stepped up to the plate. They took heed of the scientific experts and learned all the lessons from China. Consequently, both our countries had a much smaller infection/ death toll. Not only that but their leadership was bordering on the Churchillian. We would not be crying into our beer. Sure we would have to grudgingly admit they did a good job.this time but shoot, that is what they are paid to for. Do they really think that we would want more deaths just to prove a point? "because I don’t believe that any governor has the constitutional authority to tell me we can’t." He may be right. Actually, I think he is right. The constitution does allow states to curtail meetings but only if applying evenly across the board. This is not what we are seeing now given that ...

@TheMiddleWay Yes, you Americans are a very litigious people. It comes with having a written constitution I suppose. Like the bible, it is open to interpretation. I would venture to say that freedom of assembly is much the same as freedom of speech. In that, you are not free to shout "Fire" in a crowded theatre. The state be it local or federal can close an individual bar or restaurant down for public health or public safety reasons if it is deemed to pose a significant risk. Similarly, if martial law is imposed and a state of emergency is only one step down from that. In the UK, all bars, cafes, etc. have been closed as of Friday last. McDonald's, and Subway had already closed their doors to seated customers but stopped take-away trading on Friday too. We still have some takeaways open but only for delivery. In general, businesses and churches have reacted responsibly here. When this is over and the dust has settled. Perhaps it might be time to remember which organizations did the right thing and which did not? Along with those lawsuits, maybe some peaceful pickets outside of the church on Sunday. With placards saying things like "Where was my right to life?"

It is not a level playing field and nor should it be. Food is an essential item, Most liquor stores sell food too and most supermarkets sell booze. Plus if you are telling people to stay at home but deny them a drink? It would be less adhered to. The small amounts of shopping I have done since lockdown has involved queuing at a safe distance to be a limited number of people in the shop. Churches are about congregating, it is not religion that is prohibited, just large gatherings.
