Making light of a pandemic that's killing thousands worldwide? Really?
273kelvin replies on May 11, 2020:
Gallows humor is making light but does not necessarily diminish the enormity or tragedy of a situation. It can be simply a coping mechanism that allows us to carry on without so heavy a burden. (I heard from a Holocaust survivor that they used to tell jokes in the camps.) But here is a more recent example: "When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my uncle Bert and not screaming in terror like his passengers". That joke was written by a comic that had mental health issues. It was in response to an actual news item from S. Africa. The thought of all those poor people was driving him into depression and the joke his only way to relieve it. Most of us are stuck at home with bugger all to do. Humor is essential to get by. This one came to me via a vicar of places at the end of his online service: "Finally I would ask you all to congratulate the prime minister Boris Johnson on the birth of his sixth child. Please also note that this only counts his children that have been born in a hospital. The real numbers may be much higher."

@kmaz My impression of the political demographics on here is that it is a-typical of the US in general. The lack of religious thinking automatically removes not only the alt-right Christians but also a broad spectrum of "God and country" flag waivers. The few Trumpers left are heavily outnumbered and as such can be popular as a pork pie at a bar-mitzvah. So I think many tend to leave. The 2016 election was a huge foot-shooting exercise for the Demographic party. Whilst Trump's slogan was "MAGA" Hillarys was "It's my turn".

@FrayedBear I did put it on here but here goes again. My fiance was gorgeous. A tall slim Italian beauty with flashing green eyes. The only trouble was her younger sister. She was always making eyes at me., bending down so I could see her ample boobs or her knickers underneath the skimpy clothes she always wore. The two weeks before the wedding. She came round to our new house whilst her sister was out. (It was something about seating plans). Then she gave it to me straight. "I really fancy you and if you feel the same then I will be naked upstairs. It will only happen this one time before you marry my sister, so it's up to you" It did not take me long to decide what to do but as I left the house for my car I was greeted by a shotgun holding dad, her mom., my fiance, and all the rest of the family. Dad put down his weapon and hugged me as did all the rest. Including the sexy sister who had come back down. Then her father said "Congratulations, my son you have passed the test. Welcome to the family" And the moral of this tale? Always keep your condoms in the car

It can happen under universal healthcare to a certain extent. The NHS in the UK has had trouble with GPs. Consequently, people who had trouble booking appointments ended up using ER. These have of course lessened to very large degree during the pandemic.

@SeaGreenEyez I am not looking to compare the two systems. I merely wished to point out some of the pitfalls of ours. We are justly proud of the NHS but it is so often a political football. When and if you join the rest of the 1st world and get your own system. It has to be born in mind whether or not and how much of its funding will be decided by politics.

273kelvin replies on Apr 22, 2020:
@SeaGreenEyez I would certainly recommend universal health care but it is not without its own inherent problems. One major one encountered by our NHS is that funding is a political decision. Given that it is a bottomless pit in regards to how much it can use. The lines that would be commercially drawn in the US become the province of whichever political party is in power. One reason that the UK spends a lot less than the US is that we have been underfunding ours for over a decade. (Tory austerity) If you look at our mortality rate during this pandemic, it is around 12% of those admitted to hospital compared to 6.5 in the US. This is because we were running very close to capacity before this thing came. For the most part, it works reasonably well. I don't have any trouble getting a doctor's appointment. He sends me for any tests he thinks I may be due. Friends with long term conditions get their meds okay. It is mostly hospital waiting lists for elective treatments like hip replacements and some like cancer where the system will struggle. Mental healthcare is also quite poor.

The thing about a statement like you want to see him fail is unfair. The situation in the UK with Boris is only slightly better than with Trump. Whilst our buffoon did not play down the virus in the same way that 45 did, large errors in policy were made and we paying the price. Firstly, if wishing made it so? there would not be enough lottery wins to go round. Secondly, let us assume a conservative wet dream. Trump and Boris really stepped up to the plate. They took heed of the scientific experts and learned all the lessons from China. Consequently, both our countries had a much smaller infection/ death toll. Not only that but their leadership was bordering on the Churchillian. We would not be crying into our beer. Sure we would have to grudgingly admit they did a good job.this time but shoot, that is what they are paid to for. Do they really think that we would want more deaths just to prove a point? If you bought a car that your relatives all said was a lemon and were proved right, would they laugh?

@TheMiddleWay Yes, you Americans are a very litigious people. It comes with having a written constitution I suppose. Like the bible, it is open to interpretation. I would venture to say that freedom of assembly is much the same as freedom of speech. In that, you are not free to shout "Fire" in a crowded theatre. The state be it local or federal can close an individual bar or restaurant down for public health or public safety reasons if it is deemed to pose a significant risk. Similarly, if martial law is imposed and a state of emergency is only one step down from that. In the UK, all bars, cafes, etc. have been closed as of Friday last. McDonald's, and Subway had already closed their doors to seated customers but stopped take-away trading on Friday too. We still have some takeaways open but only for delivery. In general, businesses and churches have reacted responsibly here. When this is over and the dust has settled. Perhaps it might be time to remember which organizations did the right thing and which did not? Along with those lawsuits, maybe some peaceful pickets outside of the church on Sunday. With placards saying things like "Where was my right to life?"

It has been the history of industrial nations to move closer to socialist ideas rather than laissez-faire capitalism. That kind of thinking belongs to the 19th century The best resource of any country is its people. Is your govt investing in this or is it only bothered about the top 1%? Maybe now but it is too little too late. The countries that have gotten ahead of this have done best. China, after initially being complacent tested isolated extensively and reports say no new cases today. I predict that other countries will see results quicker. Italy and S. Korea obviously because they got it early but also locked-down early too. Mainland Europe and Ireland next, with the UK later. The US will be slow to beat this because a, They have tested late (Trump refused the WHO testing kits) and locked-down late b, The private health system, and c, The logistics and individualistic nature of its population. Even with this unprecedented global crisis, Trump cannot resist electioneering and casual racism. He has not put into power anyone with great ability in your govt depts. Instead, they are populated with yes men. Not the best way to deal with a crisis. In times like this, you really need people that tell you when you're wrong. I watched his briefing today and he spent an inordinate amount of time talking about some US guy he got freed from Syria. If he had any real good news to impart about the most pressing matter in hand, do you think he would do this?
