273kelvin comments on Sep 1, 2018:
In the UK all faith schools are govt funded. This means they must adhere to certain requirements. "Following the 2010 Academy Act, many faith schools converted to Academy status, and are sometimes known as Faith Academies. Many Free Schools have also been created with a religious designation, and these are also sometimes referred to as Faith Academies. All academies can set pay and conditions for staff, and are not obliged to follow the National Curriculum.[9] However the Department for Education "will not approve any application where we have any concerns about creationism being taught as a valid scientific theory, or about schools failing to teach evolution adequately as part of their science curricula."[10][11] Voluntary Aided and Voluntary Controlled faith schools follow the same National Curriculum as state schools, with the exception of religious studies, where they are free to limit it to their own beliefs"

Lots of advice here, I can only go with what happened to me. Honesty is the best policy with your kids. Dad was an atheist mum was not. He told me of his non-belief but added "This is what I think. Its not necessarily what you should think. You have to make up your own mind on such things and not let anyone else tell how you should think". I guess you know how that turned out.

Sitting here on Aigburth rd, halfway between Ringos and Stuart Sutcliffs old houses. The magical mystery tour bus goes past several times a day. So heres a family story. My nephew is married to a wonderful singer and actress. She splits her work between acting roles and teaching in LIPA (the Liverpool institute for performing arts). When Macca (Paul) came to open the collage, she was asked to sing "Blackbird" for him. A daunting task as you can imagine. By all accounts this was a hair on the back of your neck performance by all who heard it. Sometime later she was called into the principles office. She feared something she had done wrong but no. Linda had not long died and Paul asked specifically for her to come sing at the memorial service. Of course she said yes and soon after there she was at st Martin in the field before the altar for the whole ceremony. Singing not only "Blackbird" but parts of his oratorio too. In the audience/congregation was Mick, Kieth, Elton John and you name it. So proud of her PS this is her taking the solo https://youtu.be/BlvNJ1O83oE

273kelvin comments on Aug 30, 2018:
Odd that you should ask this. I just met a woman on POF. We texted and spoke for hours on the phone. Had one date which was just coffee at her place. Then arranged another which she cried off for family reasons. She said that she was not trying to blow me off and I believed her but then I saw her on POF last night. I must admit to a touch green eye but then I wrote a little poem for her. I figured if I want her I had better stand out from the crowd.

My Queen-size bed feels aspirational lately: I use only a sliver of it while sleeping.
273kelvin comments on Aug 29, 2018:
I have a double bed. Not sure if its queen sized, my bed size matters leaves something to be desired. I hardly use it now. Nearly every night I fall asleep on the sofa. The TV or something off my computer giving me the allusion of company. Every time I force myself into the other room, to make the formal act of sleeping. I seem to be haunted by bad dreams. I dont know if its ghosts of love affairs or what is by now, unusual surroundings. All I know is that it seems alien to me, unfriendly and cold.

273kelvin comments on Aug 28, 2018:
My dad had the best learning to type story. He was a telecommunications guy on a British submarine serving in the Indian ocean WW2. After VE day it was decided that US and UK navies would work together against the Japanese. The US navy typed its Morse code whereas The British navy tapped theirs out. This meant dad had to learn to type. He and a dozen other sailors were taken to Perth Australia where they were in the equivalent of Pittman secretarial school. Him and the others were billeted in an old rope factory. I remember him saying "Son I would be lying to you if I said that I spent one night in that rope factory"
Except when I took it we didn't have electric typewriters.

Hello y’all.
273kelvin comments on Aug 27, 2018:
I was very shy and quite goofy at 21 so I can relate. There is lots of good advice here but not many members near you. Join the club (sic). Pros and cons; lets change the odds. Pros;- you like libraries - Book clubs are full of women. Take an interest in the classic romantic fiction of authors like Jane Austin and steer it on to Wordsworth. Which brings me to hiking. Lots of women love walking. Hiking clubs may good way to meet girls or when you do meet one, suggest a picnic Who could resist?. Couples, People in a relationship have a temptation to match-make. so if you get friendly with a few couples in these clubs, nurture it. Cons - Gaming a good way to kill time but really what are the odds? how many female gamers do you know compared to male? Online dating:This is a scattergun game. Think of it as a mail shot campaign. You have to send loads of msgs to get a bite but you cannot be too impersonal. What would get you to respond? Dear sir/madam gets deleted. As does just your name and a standard cut/paste msg. If you get a pop-up saying "Hi Randy we see that your a level 9 on xbox game splattherat and we really think you might like this one" Your gonna be tempted. Same goes for online dates. You say youre shy. Well say it in your profile. So many women complain about players online. Guys who think they are gods gift and are dicks. (up to and inc. sending pics of said dicks). There are loads of girls who are shy too. So here is a sample msg you might like to pick the best bits off. (forgive me A2Jennifer I am using you as an example) "Hello Jennifer, you have a lovely smile. I love books too and would like to get to know you. I am quite shy so this is hard but most of the important stuff is in my profile. Please feel free to ask away about anything else and I look forward to chatting with you. PS. what type of volunteer work do you do?" You see a lot of that can be cut/pasted but you have to ask about their specifics otherwise its a wasted msg and a lost opportunity. Hope this helps

Let me guess, German car? BMWs, Audis or VW golfs are the prime culprits on UK roads. Also their indicators dont work. They are non existent or late in changing lanes and in left turns (we drive on the proper side of the road). I try just tapping my brake a few times. Not enough to slow down but just so as my brake light comes on. If that doesnt work then I slow down and give more distance in front of me. If they overtake then I always leave a greater distance because they will be start/stopping all the time. I really irks me too and I want a bumper sticker that says "KEEP YOUR DISTANCE - EPILEPTIC DRIVING"

Gambling was something I ditched not before time. I used to play chess for a club and county but was very time consuming and would involve me driving. There was always a drink either after or during the game and though I would limit myself to just 2.that rule got bent too often, In the end it it was the winning that I craved more than the game itself. Winning is a drug and as such is addictive. Though I recommend those most people try it at least once.

I have a friend with a drinking problem.
273kelvin comments on Aug 22, 2018:
Its a dilemma, morally you should betray your friend and shop her to the cops before she maybe kills someone. In that respect Emerald https://agnostic.com/member/Emerald is right. Morality is one thing friendship is another. You could leave it to fate whether she just gets pulled over or the other thing. One thing you cannot do as a friend is nothing. If the situation continues as is, something will stop it. Ranging from a hefty fine and no licence, to jail time and a weight that will never leave her or anywhere in-between those two.. None of which a friend would want. So what can you do? You say that she knows she has a problem. Okay she drinks, you know it she knows it, thats the start. Ask her if she would like a game of Russian roulette. (You dont have to have a revolver but it may be a good visual aid.) When she says no, ask her "if there were more empty chambers would it make a difference. 10, 20, 100, or 1,000. At what point does it become good odds to pull that trigger? How much do you need your car? Work family, friends, shopping imagine your life without it. Because that will happen eventually, just like the revolver. If your gonna drink, sack the car. For one thing you can enjoy a drink far better if you dont have to worry about getting caught DUI. Take a cab, ride a bus. Shit, if you carry on like this youll be riding them all the time anyway. Think of a cab ride as a sales tax on your drink. If you dont pay now, you pay more later." Then (and this is up to you) you could offer to help her is she is ever stranded. Either by picking her up or letting her get a cab to yours and lend her the fare.
To reuse or not to reuse, that is the question.

When Sky first started in the UK. A station called "LIVE TV" had a dumb it down for the plebs character called "News Bunny". This consisted of a guy dressed in a rabbit suit from head to toe, who would appear at press conferences and photo shoots. Then came a by-election and a bright spark in the Murdoch echelon thought "We should have News Bunny stand as a candidate". So not only did this poor bugger have to wear this ridiculous (and hot) outfit but he had to change his name. "Don`t worry it wont be for long and you can change it back straight afterward" they said. So one of the official candidates Was News Bunny. Then the guy got done for obstruction of the highway. A misdemeanor but nevertheless an offence and under UK law you cannot change your name if there is an outstanding criminal record in that name till after three months have passed. So the guy was stuck with the name for 90 days after. He was not a happy bunny. PS. One of the other uplifting ideas they had was topless darts.

273kelvin comments on Aug 20, 2018:
Any sitting of the house of commons in the UK starts with prayers. A backbench MP (not a member of the govt or opposition cabinet) cannot get a seat (there are less seats than MPs) and therefore cannot speak in any debate without first attending said prayers, It also requires an allegiance to the monarch (the reason why Sinn fein MPs do not sit at Westminster). There are many atheist, and Muslim MPs who Instead of standing and facing the back wall, simply remain seated. This does not interfere with the process of govt. Just one of the many hypocrisies that us atheists have to endure.

These things are best achieved by non-verbal communication. A touch on the arm, a smile or maybe a laugh when and if sex might appear in the conversation. If that does not work perhaps a reminiscence or reference to one of your last physical times together. It depends on how thick he is. You may have to grab his butt. I have noticed on here that although we reject the doctrine of Christianity. Many of us still adhere to its morality. You wont go to hell for enjoying a good roll in the hay, so why so much angst? Just as people on their death bed dont say "I wish I had spent more time in the office". They also dont say "I wish I had less sex".

I have been a bit depressed lately, starting to face reality.

You said it bud. Your not dead yet - thats a result. It may not feel like it but it is. Think about how many of your contemporaries that are not here anymore. I have a few but not many years on you and I can tell you this. As post baby boomers we have followed in the wake of their generation. Now we get to be younger than all those hippys who are claiming that 70 is the the new 30. On a personal note, I joined a hook up site at 57 and ended up having more sex in 2 years than I had in my 20s!, so it is out there if you you look. I did not start writing till a few years back. Hell Whistler did start painting till his 60s. Another thing about getting older is you can hang out with young women and they feel safe. Okay nothings going to happen but its great to just be in their company with no pressure. I spent this new years eve with 4 lovely young ladies. Something that would not have happened a few decades ago. What you lose in youth, you gain in experience. You know when to tell a woman she looks good, beautiful, sexy or just hold her. That stuff only comes with time and you have payed your dues. Buck up pall, the years will inevitably roll on like the odometer on your car. There is nowt you can do about it but its so much better than the alternative. Just embrace it and go with the flow. Warning When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick flowers in other people's gardens And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go Or only bread and pickle for a week And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes that keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practise a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple. Jenny Joseph

People say this is poverty but often it is laziness and bad education. I dont know about the US but in the UK Aldi do fruit & veg for 49p a bag and Tesco offer free fruit at the entrance for kids to eat on their way round the store. A lot of children will refuse to eat fruit & veg and their parents let them get away with this. Mums (lets face it they are the ones that buy the food). Buy convenience foods because they have never been taught to cook or a too lazy to try.

How do you respond to religious conversation?

Seeing as I have yet to achieve the great t-shirt label of desire. It might hypothetically go like this. "I see you are agnostic. But may I ask if you have ever had a close relationship with God?" "He got jealous when I dated the tooth fairy" "But the tooth fairy is not real, god is" "I beg to differ. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt goodbye"
Agnostics/atheists do you require evidence for other things in life, too?
273kelvin comments on Aug 13, 2018:
I wrote a post on here some time back stating that we all believe in magic. As you can imagine I got quite a few nay sayers but the gist of it goes like this. Belief is not the same as knowledge or reason. We may empirically know that urging a sports star on TV will have no effect whatsoever on the outcome, yet we still do so. Similarly a golfer will lean to the left or right in an endeavor to alter the trajectory of an already stuck ball. Away from sports, how many have not openly wished for a traffic light to change and said "yes" when it does? Maybe pushed the button of a lift or crossing more than once or just pushed it when there is other people waiting, who obviously pressed it before you showed up. Will your magic fingers tip the balance and make things happen faster? Of course not but that does not stop us from believing it might, otherwise why do we do it? You may scoff at this idea but think on it next time you cuss an incompetent, slow or tailgating driver who is in no position to hear you

Foraging on the savanna, you hear a rustle in the grass. It could be the wind or it could be a lion. Do you run or stay? We are descended from the ones that ran.
The Burka, should there be criticism of this headwear?
273kelvin comments on Aug 13, 2018:
I have biker friends who are in no way racist. They object to being told to take off their helmet when they pay for petrol yet burkas are ok. His comment is less about the burka and more about Boris jockeying for position in the Tory party. May has ballsed up the brexit negotiations and is on her way out. Boris wants to get support from the right.
