Rape Culture No Myth.
273kelvin comments on Jan 21, 2019:
In my experience a woman is far better off getting a few rent-a-thugs to give her justice than the legal system
273kelvin replies on Jan 22, 2019:
@GinaKay There is a difference between the personal and the societal. In terms of society you are of course 100% right. However given the legal difficulties of rape cases, even a good case with a strong, efficient, and dedicated prosecution. Often it will come down to "He said she said" which always allows the benefit of doubt to swing towards the defence. That is in a good case, many are not. Time may have elapsed, evidence lost, sometimes by the prosecution itself (I have known this happen). So on a personal level if I were to advise any woman close to me how to proceed? I would go with thugs. The chances of getting justice legally are too small. It is rather like bullying. Whist we all condemn this and would want schools to act to stamp it out. We know that telling the teacher etc. is the least effective way to deal with it on a 1 to 1 level. Far better to teach your kid to stand up for themselves and encourage them to make more friends. Systems are not perfect. The legal system is far from it. Unless we want to remove the concept of innocent till proven guilty and reasonable doubt from rape cases. With all the repercussions that may have in false accusations. Then I stand by my comment

T2 Trainspotting I dont know how you feel about sequels?
towkneed comments on Jan 6, 2019:
Saw Trainspotting. I spent years (long time ago) with that type of life and crowd, although not in England. So parts of it really hit home. Although other parts not so much. Did enjoy the movie, but also found Ewan McGregor's character did a bit too much "shipey shit" for me to really like, ...
273kelvin replies on Jan 7, 2019:
Firstly it is set in Scotland. (I do not have a problem with your faux pas but a scot certainly would.) Yes the dead baby is harrowing but it is a consequence of the lifestyle. Great writers hit us where it hurts. Dickens kills off Little Nell, Hamlet does not survive. Irvine Welsh did the same. What is more obscene, that or the shoot em up cartoon violence of a hollywood blockbuster. Where the body count rises, all the good guys hit the target, the baddies all miss and no one ends up broken and shattered? These kind of movies are churned out every month and leave us with the impression that violence is clean. Whereas in reality it is far from it. I get what youre saying about the Ewan McGregor character and so do the other characters in T2. He is not well received upon his return. This leads to the surprising hero of the story which ends up being Spud. T2 is worth watching if only for the cinematographic genius of Danny Boyle. Someone who IMHO I would place as high as Wells or Hitchcock.
I posted this as a comment but its too good to hide there.

I voted remain but I can also see a lot of reasons other than racism why people voted out. The EU is a large bureaucratic monolith that is rife with corruption. Also it galls many that we could not deport someone like Abu Hamza because the European courts said no. There has been a skills shortage in the UK for decades yet companies simply import rather than train. Like I said I voted remain but it is wrong to think that the majority of our country is racist.

273kelvin replies on Jan 3, 2019:
@johnprytz Yes I get that its just the book version adds more to the story. One of the best differences is in "Brighton Rock". Grahame Greene wrote the film ending too which has a terrible phonograph recording of her now dead love telling her that he hates her. The film has the record sticking on "I suppose that you want me to say that I love you..I love you...". The book just says "Then she went home to play his record and face the greatest hurt of all". Both endings work equally in their respective mediums.

273kelvin replies on Jan 3, 2019:
@johnprytz We do love to solve mysteries. They are puzzles which like a jig-saw are done and forgotten about. All loose ends tied up neatly. Sometime however the writer will leave it open. Like the song "Salisbury Hill".You never know what it is that caused the event. Cheap TV is full of shows like unsolved mysteries etc. Jack the ripper, the black dahlia or even the JFK assassination fascinate us because they remain unresolved. Have you noticed in horror movies that it is often more scary before you actually see the monster and people just die or disappear for no reason. In "Picnic at hanging rock" the writers obviously left the mystery open for that reason. It is not hollywood where producers like to have audiences leaving the theater satisfied and for that reason it stays in our heads.

The Zulus in the movie are real Zulus. The SA govt at the time did not allow them to be paid so the film co. gave them all the cattle used in the making of it (which was more than they would have got as extras). The Zulu leader (in the film) was a direct descendant of the original. Its portrayal of indigenous people was a far cry from hollywood's cowboy and indian movies and I have heard it sighted as an inspiration for black movie makers. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5953537/Zulu-chief-defends-Michael-Caine-film-saying-British-tribal-warriors-respected-other.html

I have commented on on women who also complain about online dating. Much of their problems stem from waiting to be msgd 1st. @Jacar I do not think of this as female demands. Rather than what works. "I am responding to all the posts from women deriding men for not doing as they want us too." How far does this go? Shower, shave, clean and trim nails, change your sheets, go somewhere nice for a date? Of course you would do all those things to meet someone because if you didnt then you would deserve to stay alone. Your post said basically "I say hello why is that not good enough?". Well its not working so lets look at why. Men are 3.5 times more likely to msg a woman 1st on online dating sites. So women get dozens of msgs a day. This is not females calling the play. This is about what gets you laid. If you keep on just messaging "hello" and it doesnt work. Are you prepared to do something else? Let me put it this way. Your car wont start. The battery is ok, as is gas etc. So you figure out that its the starter motor. You hit the solenoid (I dont know if you yanks call it that) with a hammer. It has worked sometimes in the past but this time it does not. Do you keep hitting it or do you bite the bullet and get a new starter? "Repeatedly women are posting about how we are not adequate." It is not we are inadequate, more like dumb or rather deaf. Women say they hate cock pics but guys keep sending them, they say that they hate msgs saying "Hi babe you look hot" but still they come. You have said that you just say "hello" and they say "Well I get loads of them why should I respond to yours?". You say well it should be enough....mmmm. I posted some advice in my comment. Also there was a good post on here a few months back which was gay eye for a straight guy on profiles. Yours does not even have a picture of yourself. Do you really think that much of your allure that they will automatically beat a path to your door? Think again bud because there a plenty of fish in the pond but you have to use a decent bait. You can get defensive about this or do something different? Up to you but if you choose the former then dont run out of kleenex.
Okay.

@Donotbelieve Viagra or its cheaper generic Sildenafil is very good for the evening. Cialis is more likely to last all weekend and more of a marathon than a sprint. @eStop The trick is to tighten up the truss rod and reduce the saddle till it starts to buzz. Then slacken off the truss rod till it stops buzzing. (The nut rarely needs adjustments). Remember to leave it a day between adjustments, as it will take that long for the guitar to settle Further improvements can be made by stoning down the frets but this is something you have to be careful about. Its best done with a new sharpening stone thats usually used for chisels etc. You can find loads of tutorials on youtube

@Trajan61 You dont live here and I dont live there. I cannot say that I wold not own a gun if I was in your hood.. What I can say is that you would not need one in mine. I live close to the city center. It is quite high crime (for England) yet I do not even lock my flat door when Im home. You seem to think that you need a gun to protect yourself and property. I have been in several situations where had a gun been around I or someone else would have killed someone. I will not go into details but this was not a home invasion. Trust me that if I had a gun at the time I would be in jail right now and I know many others that would be too. Maybe thats why the USA has the biggest prison population in the 1st world? What I cannot understand is the reasons against gun control. From what I hear its only trying to stop impulse buys, those with criminal records and/or unstable psychiatric history and the sale of assault weapons. To me that seems quite a reasonable stance. All of the no control arguments from the NRA could also be used to justify North Korea having nukes

@TomMcGiverin If you are talking strickly left and right then yes. However if you look at practical politics and policies then Obama care is privatized health care only part funded by the state. Which is very close to to Torys. The US is by nature a conservative country. Your revolution was 242 years ago and was instigated by rich landowners not wanting to pay taxes. The UK has had a series of revolutions of differing scales. That has over its history overturned the power of the monarchy, the church and the landed aristocracy. Beneath the facade of royal weddings etc.bubbles a radical left wing whos reason dete is "eat the rich". Take gun control for example. If it was the UK? The aftermath of Columbine would have led a campaign to repeal the 2nd amendment. This stance may not have worked completely but if enough support was generated then subsequent reforms would have been the compromise position. The US left try for small reforms and struggle. As I type this I am watching a report on fracking. This has been a hot topic in local and national politics for the past few years. Unlike the US all the profits after the drilling company has taken its cut will go to the state, not to the local land owners. Subsequently there is little incentive for locals to want this. A very strong ground route opposition ranging from local authorities voting it down to sjws barricading drilling sites has slowed it down and made it very difficult to go ahead. Fracking will probably go on anyway but it will have to make damn sure it crosses all "T"s and dots all "I"s.

@OwlInASack I think its a perfect example of overstepping the line. Those lads were white. What if they were radical islamists? Is it ok to say that islam is a crock of shit but not muslims? Is one theological and the other racial? Then how about judaism or jews? The problem in a democracy is when the majority find views abhorrent it is difficult to defend the right to express them. How far did the burning of that poppy go towards shouting fire in a crowded theater? I am sure that the prosecution argued that given the civil unrest in NI recent past and the sectarian violence that still lurks beneath the surface. Any public display of this sort could result in bloodshed but was that their intent? If the intention is to goad others to commit unlawful acts then there is a clear case but then we are in the realm of thought crime. It is a crime in the UK to abuse someone using the N word. The word itself is not banned but the abuse is. Therein lies the dividing line. You have freedom of speech unless you are curtailing others rights.

273kelvin replies on Dec 13, 2018:
@UUNJ You are certainly entitled to your opinion and I do not dismiss it. I suppose you have to know Jane to understand the situation. She is a highly intelligent, hard working mom. Working in a very stressful job. Her natural exuberant personality bubbles over and lightens any room that she is in. Such a character can make a real difference in a workplace that deals with the most distressing situations. Sick and often dying children can be the norm. Failing that just the act of taking blood samples off a screaming handicapped kid would send most to seek other employment. A little latitude I think is forgivable here. Not everything can be bound by hard and fast rules

@OwlInASack It is always going to be a balancing act. Nowadays we have the far right spouting racial abuse, fundamental muslims doing much the same but with far more terrible consequences. Of course any reasonable society would want to curb such excesses but how far do we take this? When does this start to be censoring legitimate protest and opposition? and who decides what that is? Take the case I mentioned in an earlier comment. Two teenagers from Belfast burnt a poppy on FB. Now I do not condone this act but I believe they had a right to do so. You may not agree but you did not grow up with soldiers patrolling your streets. They got 3 months in jail. Similar sentences have been handed out to radical muslims who have done the same. Is it too big a stretch to sanction footballers who kneel? Would 45 love the powers that Putin has? It is up to us, yes us to be vigilant and protect our society not only from the abuses of freedom but also the abuses of power and we have to go that extra mile for things that we disagree with. Because so many of the good things we take for granted have been won by people ready to say things that got them behind bars..
