273kelvin replies on Nov 13, 2018:
@WilliamFleming Much as I respect your view on bodies etc. It is not and cannot be the states view, in respect of separation of church and state. It makes no odds if you think a murderer will be reincarnated as an ant. The taking of a human life is the taking of a human life. To continue the tree analogy. If the lumberjack repeatedly fells trees on top of people however innocently. The state would have a duty to revoke his logging license. Just as if you were to continue to have car accidents due to errors in judgement. It would make no difference how many miles that you drove without incident. The state would curtail your right to drive. If the state kills 200 guilty people but also 3 innocent ones. Then it too must have its 00 status removed, As it no longer can be trusted with a licence to kill

Funny that you should mention that case. I listened to a radio documentary about the capital punishment debate and one of the guys on it had lost a daughter in that bombing. Now before it happened he was pro-death penalty but his daughter was not. When she killed he decided to go anti in her memory. Thinking that she would not want another life taken on her account. The victims families were split into pro and anti. With often quite vernment arguments between the two camps. The pro`s thinking that it might give them some closure. It did not. Also from what I know of the case. There are some reservations on the idea that he acted alone. If he in fact did not act alone? Then one possible line of inquiry is most certainly closed forever.

If you walk in the woods and a tree falls on you? That is for want of a better term an act of god. If that tree was cut by a lumberjack at the time? That is an act of negligence. If it was willful and easily prevented then its criminal negligence or manslaughter. If it was deliberate then its murder. If the state kills an innocent person but then says sorry but we thought that they deserved it at the time? How can it justify punishing other murderers? "Hey I only killed one guy and he was a gang banger. Youve killed 5 innocent guys in the last 2 years" The difference between prison and a death sentence is you can release an innocent person from jail and although they will never get that time back. They can be monetarily compensated and they get to live the rest of their lives in freedom. You cannot un-inject a corpse.

This is the crux of the argument. From your stance Trump has not or could not ever do right. Neither could anyone ever support any of his actions without being "the enemy". Similarly from the other side anyone who opposes Trump is also "the enemy". Both positions have a tendency towards chauvinism. Which may I say is cultivated by the 45th himself. The polarization of america is exactly what he wants. He is a sound bite terrorist who throws bombs into the crowd and then waits for the reactionists to man the barricades. With each relative entrenchment of positions his becomes more secure.

Black voters were not being disenfranchised etc. Then it might not be such an issue. There is a big difference between someone like Nelson or Gladstone (both of which have statues in the UK that some are campaigning to be taken down) that were racist but thats not what they were famous for and someone who was only famous for fighting to keep people as slaves. You can have a statue of Wagner because of his music, whilst detesting his politics. It is another thing to have a statue of Hitler.

You mean like liberals and their fear of poverty?
273kelvin replies on Nov 12, 2018:
@Wellspring It is a very scary thing to see the collapse of a currency. I recall Alistair Cooke who was in Germany during the weimar republic. "If you went to a restaurant and ordered a meat dish they would not sit you by the window because someone would look in and press their nose against the glass. Then others would do so and eventually there would be a crowd which would lead to a riot" Zimbabwe missed a trick in stabilizing its currency. At one point the magnesium strip in the notes was worth more than its face value. People were tearing out the strips and taking them to scrap yards. So the govt. stopped putting the strips in. Had they left it alone then it might have halted the hyper-inflation? There are all kinds of safeguards surrounding paper currency, govt bonds etc.but these are dependent on a continuing ability to keep paying the interest on loans. As the US debt keeps rising, the money to service this debt will increasingly cut into the budget. Not too bad atm when interest rates are globally low but you cannot guarantee that that will continue. Then again political events may upset the apple cart. For example if Saudi had an islamic take over or if relations with China became hostile. It only takes one major creditor to call in your markers and the whole deck of cards will come crashing down. Then you will be looking at a $1,000 hamburger. Some say the real reason for the Iraq war was that Sadam insisted on Euros not petro-dollars for his oil.
A question for my American cousins.

There is a university campus in the UK where they vandalised a mural of Kiplings "If". On the grounds that he was racist and pro-empire. Well duh. he was a product of his age. Not only that but for his time he was very progressive* and guess what? Nearly all the brown skin Indians were pro-empire too at the time. You might as well condemn Shakespeare for being anti-semitic (which he was). Again what does it serve? "If" is a great poem, if not the greatest. There are rules to live by that anyone can admire. Whatever their creed or culture. Btw Mowgli was Indian in "the jungle book" not like Tarzan who becomes king of the jungle when theres all those black guys around for ages. Just because hes the son of an English lord. * This is the end of one poem. This type of thinking could still get you thrown out of a Trump rally for being too liberal. Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet, Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment Seat; But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth, When two strong men stand face to face though they come from the ends of the earth!

@Wellspring From what I understand the american education system is not even good at training people for jobs. The US military is finding it difficult to find NCOs who are literate. All successful countries like Germany, Japan and China have good education. Its not that all the money goes on elections. Its the fact that you cannot get elected without it. Therefore you are already in debt to that money before you take office. So no matter who gets in big money owns them. As for the fall of empire. Having lived through the end days of the biggest. I can tell you its not just about currency but trust. He is a story from the raj. A captain was in the mess at Calcutta when a follow officer comes in and says "I just had to pay £20 for this in the bazaar" then hands him a worn out piece of paper, On it in faded writing was the captains signature bellow a promissory note. The captain had written this 6 months previously on the north west frontier to buy horses for his men. The note had then travelled the length of the subcontinent as currency. Solely backed by the word of a British officer.

Even the Mormons official church does not condone polygamy anymore. Marriage is the union one man and one woman FORSAKING ALL OTHERS till death do us part. The very family values that they purport to uphold, has been flouted by this guy on numerous occasions. This is not like G. W. who said "I was a drunk and I did stupid things that I now regret. I have been sober now for many years and have tried to live my life better". This guy says "Oh boys will be boys and it was just locker room talk". No regrets or repentance offered. Not a great example for any christian.

"These text books were donated by the campaign to elect John Doe" You seem to think this is a problem created by one party or administration, it is not. It has been systemic since 1945 and only growing larger. I will give you case in point. Atm there is only one free boxing gym in the whole of NY. It is run by 2 ex cops who struggle to get the $50.000 a year to keep it open. How many kids might have been saved had there been more? How much has that cost NY in the long run? How short sighted is the boxing industry by not funding this? Yet I bet you any money you like that the guys who run the fights donate to a political candidate. Plus the victims lived to tell the tale. Albeit behind greater security. If it had been in your country the thieves would most definitely been armed and who knows what might have happened? Btw neither of the victims had any desire to buy a gun afterward.

@Wellspring Initially it was not a social worker. Just someone from the electric co. to see what the problem was. They then referred him to a social worker. I really dont think that the USA is communist. If it was you would not have the homeless problem that you do. The USA is paranoid about communism and has been since the 1920s This has been the excuse for large arms spending which has left you bankrupt (. http://www.usdebtclock.org/ ) Inc. wars in Vietnam and Korea not to mention interventions in Chilli etc. The truth is america has always had the least to fear from communism of any western nation. It is built not on gods laws but on capitalism. My comment was just an illustration of how social intervention can by more cost effective in the long term. That has to make sense in dollars and cents. If a fraction of the money put into the war on drugs was put into education, housing and rehab programs. Btw the right to life comes before liberty. You cant be free if youre dead. In England you dont need a gun because very few people own one. Laws are strict and sentences severe on possession. Consequently only high level drug dealers have them and tend to just use them on rivals. Therefore all that I have ever needed to defend myself is my 2 fists and good manners. He had always payed his bills on time before so what had changed? So they sent out someone to see him. It seems that his wife had left him, he was drinking heavily and had lost his job. So social workers were allocated and with some help they sorted him out and got him a live-in job on the railways. Now that guy is a productive and contributing member of society. Before you dismiss that level of care as authoritarian. Remember that the US of A has over 1% of its population in jail. That is more than any other country in the western world. 273kelvin replies on Nov 5, 2018:
I have thought about it. However several problems would present themselves. a Do I have it in me to hold the attention for over 300 pages? b, Could I write such a long tale? This would perforce involve more than just 2 characters. Each section of the Lynette story took me a whole day to put down (not being one one of the 10 fingered typing brigade) and often filling up the necessary amount of words was very hard indeed. Then there would be research, editing and proofreading. c, I have also such mundane tasks as earning a living. When the writing bug bites I am consumed and absorbed but this is not an allocated time slot. Often it strikes in the early hours of the morning. This would inevitably encroach into my work schedule. d, once written there would be the even greater task of finding someone to print it. From what I understand it is no mean feat to get your 1st work published. I do thank you for the words of encouragement and it is something that I will reconsider. In the meantime I am grateful for the platform that this site has offered. "Lynette" had sat unfinished for over a year. The refusal of vocal to publish part 4 left me disillusioned. "Why should I write it if no ones going to read it?" The ending of the story also coincides with a personal issue regarding an ex. Whilst she was in no way a fucked up as Lynette. She was however very sexual and the naked dancing was certainly borrowed from her. I am glad that I now can put them both to bed.
