What is something you should never say to the opposite sex?
273kelvin comments on Feb 25, 2018:
Question Does my bum look big in this? Politician I`m delighted that you asked me that question and firstly I`d like to make two points perfectly and absolutely clear. It is a mater of record that your previous boyfriend thought that your arse was enormous and totally out of proportion to the rest of your body, which has (let me finish) which has left us with a legacy of spiraling poor self -esteem that we are still dealing with to this day. . But do you think my bum looks big in this? It is a mater of record that your previous boyfriend thought that your arse was enormous and totally out of proportion to the rest of your body, which has left us with a legacy of spiraling poor self-esteem that we are still dealing with. jUST ANSWER THE BLOODY QUESTION. DO YOU THINK MY BUM LOOKS BIG IN THIS ? . That`s not something I would care to go into too much detail about until I`ve reviewed all the figures carefully and at length.

Has anyone ever pawned anything?
273kelvin comments on Feb 24, 2018:
I pawned some jewelry years ago Interestingly it is the origin of the nursery rhyme " Pop goes the weasel " The " weasel " being cockney rhyming slang for a coat. (weasel-stoat-coat). To " pop " meaning to pawn. Where I come from there`s an expression "popped his/her clogs " ie. died. Shoes, boots or clogs being the last things to get pawned.

Iceland to Ban Boys’ Circumcision, Introduces 6-year Jail Term for Offenders
273kelvin comments on Feb 24, 2018:
This is a difficult subject. On one hand I can see the justification of such a ban but I can also see the religious and cultural side too. I read an article by an Anglican vicar who was jewish by birth. He said how he felt guilty not circumcising his son. He talked of how in the camps they tried to eliminate their religion and how the jews fought so hard to maintain it. " For if it is lost. then we are lost ". For him it was almost like a betrayal of the suffering of his people. This might be easy for those of us not born into that culture to dismiss but not so for those who are. Prima facie law would draw no distinction between male and female on this subject. Them both being actual bodily harm to a minor, however the historical, cultural, religious and medical differences are vast. A ban in more multi-cultural countries than Iceland would create a legal firestorm which would (if it did nothing else) unite Jews and Muslims. The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prevents Congress from making any law respecting an establishment of religion, PROHIBITING THE FREE EXORCISE OF RELIGION, or abridging the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the right to peaceably assemble, or to petition for a governmental .

273kelvin comments on Feb 23, 2018:
When I was a young man I met a dotty old lady who thought that bad weather was caused by cars passing each other. They created tiny whirlpools which spiral upwards. I have since heard someone spout a similar theory but this was more specific, in that the northern hemisphere should drive on the left, southern on the right. The resulting whirlpools making the correct spiral directions. I find all faith based religion quite pathetic but the Southcotians are very amusing. I do suggest you check them out.

Why do criminals murder innocent people?
273kelvin comments on Feb 21, 2018:
I have met two people that have killed in my lifetime. One seemed to be quite a decent guy, affable and friendly. Only after knowing him a while did he let slip the fact that he was out on licence. (a parol term for convicted killers). I can only assume it was a mistake of youth, a fight taken to exteem or some such. The second was a woman who had killed her husband. By all accounts he was a guy who deserved all he got. After years of abuse she had finally snapped and stabbed him to death. Her nickname was Paranoid Penny (it being the custom of the community to give people such nicknames). She had a strange and wild look in her eyes, like that of a cornered and frightened animal. I only met her once and that was in a room full of guys sitting around chewing the fat and some such as guys do. When she entered the room it fell silent. Gone was all the bonhomie. There was not even a trace of flirting that would usually accompany the entrance of a woman into an all male conclave. Insead every guy sat quite silent with crossed legs until she left. The third case is by far the most tragic. I never met the killer in question but I knew his father and he told me the tale. His son was mentally ill with paranoid schizophrenia, here are his dads words as best as I can remember them. " We knew that he was going to kill someone, it was obvious. Both me and his mum went and pleaded with the doctors/police anyone in authority who would listen and said " Hes going to kill someone " but they could not or would not do anything. And then he killed someone and now hes in a hospital for the criminally insane "

Do you "people watch?"
273kelvin comments on Feb 19, 2018:
I adore people watching. There are so many ways to enjoy it. For example you can make up stories around them, like that old couple. He wanted to go Italian and she Chinese and they`re both sulking at the compromise. Conversely you can simply observe. This can be very rewarding as you get an insight to human behaviour. This is how fortune tellers and their ilk make a living. My friend would often ask me to predict how someone would act. I usually bet £1 on the outcome and rarely lost. For example a couple came into the bar and I said that she would buy the 1st drinks. I won and when he asked how I knew this would happen I told him that the guy was much better looking and that she was having to try hard to keep him. Once I even predicted what car a woman owned.

273kelvin comments on Feb 19, 2018:
My dad was an atheist and when I asked about it (at about your childs age) He told me the truth. He also said that this is what he thought, not necessarily what I should think and when I grew older I should make my own mind up about it. The fact that I am here shows which way I went. I would also tell your child that easter goes back along way before Jesus and is to do with spring. When the trees and the flowers start to come back to life and so we celebrate it with eggs and bunny rabbits. It is also when christians have chosen to celebrate the resurrection.
Personal religious stories
273kelvin comments on Feb 19, 2018:
A story I tell to christians that I like My ex is Jewish and we visited Israel together quite a few years ago. As we were on a tour bus heading down the Jericho road on the way to the dead sea. The tour guide said " On your right you can see the inn mentioned in the story of the good Samaritan " . My ex gave me a look of complete ignorance and said " Whats she talking about? " I then proceeded to tell her the parable from what I could remember back in sunday school. Its a good story and she liked it saying " Oh that`s where the suicide prevention guys The Samaritans comes from then? " The reason I tell this to likable christians is that I got to tell the tale to someone who never heard it before, on the road where it is set.

Do we really value free speech anymore?
273kelvin comments on Feb 17, 2018:
The problem has been that we have had a narrowly defined parameter of allowable debate. The rise of the right in both the US, Europe and the UK has a least widened those boundaries. I cannot speak for the US so I will concentrate on the UK. Two years ago we had a referendum on brexit. One of the key issues was immigration. Prior to that there was an election gaff by the sitting PM Gordon Brown. It happened when he met a middle aged working class woman whilst campianing. She complained that migrants from the EU were taking UK jobs. Brown fobbed her off with the usual politicians no-speak and returned to his car. Unwittingly he had left his mic still on, the terms "racist" and "bigoted" were overheard. This led to three things, 1st he had to go back to the woman and give a groveling apology, 2nd he lost the election and 3rd it brought out the whole subject of immigration into the political arena, leading to the brexit referendum itself. Let me state that i personally voted to remain but I do come from a blue collar, building trade background and I can sympathize with many of the opposing views. If you were to read any of the social media at the time of the referendum, you might have supposed that it was a slam dunk for remain. Anybody supporting a leave position was shouted down and branded as if not racist then at least xenophobic. Consequently the brexiteers kept schtum till the vote. No great debate was possible. The population of the UK narrowly voted to leave the EU mostly because whole sections of it felt disenfranchised and wanted to be heard. I may disagree with your views but I will defend to the death your right to express them. Forgive me if I have misquoted that but I would go further. In a democracy I have a right to be offended. If nothing offended me then that in of itself would be an offence! Society changes, moral boundaries move. We cannot expect to have a progressive society without the opportunity for progress and that means hearing stuff that you don`t like. I was listening to Richard Dawkins on the radio a while back and this christian woman said that homosexuality was a lifestyle choice. Dawkins replied "well the the great thing about a statement like that is that you can just dismiss it " . The guy in charge of the debate said " but she has a right to say it? " Then Dawkins said " Of course she has a right to say it but she`s wrong so we can dismiss it ".

Is this why the Bible, Torah and Quran ban Bacon?
273kelvin comments on Feb 15, 2018:
The torah does not specifically ban the eating of pigs as such. Just says that animals should have cloven hooves and chew the cud. It is possible to breed a Kosher pig (a la that great film " Leon the pig farmer " ) but I doubt it would make it to any rabbis dinner table. Many have made the point about pork in hot climates as a reason for the ban. I would also look at a pigs diet. Like us they are omnivorous and are quite sentient animals. Most of us would baulk at the thought of eating dog. As Churchill said " Cats look down on us, dogs look up to us. only pigs treat us as equals ".

Does anyone else do culture immersion when you travel?
273kelvin comments on Feb 14, 2018:
I do like to immerse myself when I can. The language barrier is hard to overcome but I am reminded of a time in Malta. I found myself in a small greasy spoon type of cafe (not for tourists) and asked for an " iced coffee ". The lady thought I had said a " nice coffee " and proceeded to put a spoonful of nescafe into a half pint glass, half filled it with hot water then topped it up with evaporated milk. If this was not enough she then added 3 spoonfuls of sugar. Being English I did not complain but sat quietly in the corner. As people came in they saw my beverage and assumed that I too was Maltese and talked freely. It is amazing how you can get by with the odd grunt or nod. Maltese being a bastard language comprised Arabic, Italian and English it was not too difficult to glean the conversation. I spent a whole morning just listening and nodding, I even ordered a second coffee !
Do you find it attractive dating someone who smokes cigarettes?
273kelvin comments on Feb 14, 2018:
I have smoked most of my life. It kind of defines you more than anything really. I worked it out once that I had 3 times as many gay friends as non-smokers. I started off with cigarettes but now I smoke a pipe, which smells even worse but traps more tar so is better for me. My daughter asked me at 13 if I could just smoke cigarettes when I came to see her. She did not mind the smell as much as my pipe. I did think about it but rejected the idea because I wanted her to be repulsed by the habit. I only date smokers as we are breed apart.

A question of my British friends.
273kelvin comments on Feb 12, 2018:
It is not all doting, many of my friends on the left are republicans (I bet that phrase sounds odd to you). I like to shut them up with 2 words " president Thatcher " figure so reviled by the left that the very thought of her clinging to power any longer than she did sends shudders. Personally I go for a more pragmatic approach as do most. If it ain`t broke? A lot is made of her tourist value but she does have other advantages too. As head of state for all this time I cannot think of any other public figure worldwide that has been that scandal free (family does not count). As an a-political head of state she is rather like a chairperson that holds no power unless a constitutional crisis forces her to make a decision. (Incidentally the monarchy has, when pushed always gone in favor of reform). Although she wields no power, we do not know what goes on in her private meetings. She consults with the PM once a month, all state visits require an audience. Consequently she has met everyone from Churchill, JFK, Mandela, Thatcher (rumor has it she despised her), Nixon, De Gaul, Gorbachev you name it from the great and good to the lowly bridge operator. Imagine if Trump had to talk once a month with someone who had that kind of experience? These are all very practical reasons. Mostly she exudes a sense of duty. A word not fashionable nowadays but duty is what drives her. Her father died an early death because of it. She remains a constant in an ever changing world. For all the faults of a feudal system, they pale into insignificance when we look at republics such as France, Germany or Italy. All of which have had major constitutional crisis. The hitchhiker's guide has a part where they talk of the president of the galaxy. " Anyone who would actually want the job would be the least suitable for it. " Short of just appointing someone at random having a monarch is the next best thing. Incidentally I worked with a Bulgarian a few years back. When the wall came down their hereditary king volunteered to stand as president. On the condition that he would only serve 1 term and renounce any claim the to throne. So I asked the guy what it was like? He said " Well he was ok at 1st but after a while he ended up in Spain. PLayboying with Juan Carlos but compared to all the corrupt bastards we have had since. He was not that bad ".

273kelvin comments on Feb 11, 2018:
My dad died several decades ago but I always remember when he told me why he did not believe in god. He was a very practical type of guy. An NCO in the royal navy. Hence the fact that I was born in Malta, where this story takes place. On day he and few of his shipmates were walking along the quayside in Valletta, when a local fishing boat had just pulled in. One of the crew had fallen overboard between the boat and the harbor wall. The sea was quite choppy and the boat was banging against the harbor, threatening to crush the hapless fisherman. Immediately all the boats crew and any Maltese who saw the incident, dropped to their knees and began to cross themselves. My dad and his messmates ran to the boat, sat on the harbor wall and tried to fend off the boat with their outstretched legs. Meanwhile one of their number ran and got a rope to lower down to the guy. I can remember to this day what he told me " If religion means caring more about a mans soul than his life? Then I wanted none of it ". He never made a big deal about it, never protested when mum sent me off to sunday school, would attend church whenever a family event such as weddings etc. happened. I can see him now as he would go down on one knee and bow his head in military fashion. He did this out of respect for the occasion and family, not out of belief. (From what I understand, church services in the navy were not exactly compusarary but they would find some thing unpleasant for you to do in the meantime, if you refused to attend.) So for me, being an atheist is no great thing. I never had to come out, never lost anyone close because of my stance. I do feel for you folks stuck in the bible belt, I do.

273kelvin comments on Feb 9, 2018:
I subscribe to Richard Dawkins view that religion is a mind virus. The closer and more prolonged your exposure, the greater your risk of infection. Some mind viruses are quite benign such as wearing a baseball cap backwards or hula hoops. Some more dangerous like nazism. Even medial science is not immune. In the UK about 24% of mental heath problems are diagnosed as cannabis related. In the Netherlands 0% Sure there people that switch or join another religion but often this because of close proximity to a new source, Graham Greene to catholicism in the 30`s at Cambridge, Mohamed Ali to black Islam in the 60`s, Cat Stevens etc. Cults are the exception as they seem most successful at targeting college kids. Their intelligence helps them reject their parents religion, whilst their youth makes them vulnerable.
I still miss a woman who rejected me more than fifty years ago because of her religion.

Interestingly The battle between The Ptolemy and Copernican was not self evident. The Ptolemaic system worked and in terms of relativity equally valid. The point is that the Copernican system was BETTER. Whilst the ptolemaic system was pigs ear, the transit of Mars was particularly erratic. It is often the quality of a theory that makes it accepted. How it BEST fits the data.

Can coincidence be explained scientifically?

If someone to dealt out a pack of cards between 4 people and each person got dealt an entire suit. You probably think that someone was cheating and you would probably be correct. However given the number of bridge hands dealt in the course of a year. Probability suggests that it has happened 5 times since the games inception. How many places have you been? How many places have others been? You think about an old friend that you haven`t spoken to for ages. The phone rings and it`s them. How many times did you think about them and it didn`t? How many other people have you thought about? We had a poker night once that produced 3 royal flushes! http://archive.spectator.co.uk/article/15th-april-1899/13/another-coincidence

Calling ex Mormons...
273kelvin comments on Feb 7, 2018:
I watched psb doc on them and it dealt with Smith, his sexual wrongs, the racism. and polygamy but also what they did after Katrina. The N O police chief said " If there was a multi-national corporation who dealt with disasters. Then they would be the Mormons. They had trucks on their way to N O before the hurricane hit. They had a warehouse outside the city with tents, water, canned food blankets you name it and all of it itemised. ". Then there was an interview with one of the hurricane victims. He said " These guys showed up with orange jackets on. They helped out with food and water but then they also stayed and helped me clean up and fix things ". Just because they`re religious don`t dismiss them.
Euthanasia

My first child Ian was seemingly normal when he was born. As he grew we noticed that he was slower than other kids in developing. Ian was late to talk, walk and never managed to be potty trained. We took him to hospital so many times, especially after he suffered with epileptic fits. Finally when Ian was 7 he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called homocystinuria. An inability of his body to process the amino-acid cystine. This led to so many symptoms, fits, spasticity, mental retardation, a dislocated eye lens and most strikingly, beautiful platinum curly blond hair (a la Shirley Temple). On face value Ian would certainly (had his condition been known at birth) be a candidate for euthanasia but then that would negate who Ian was. Everybody who met Ian was enthralled and inspired. His smile even in the face of the most adverse circumstances like when he lost the ability to walk. His pleasure at the most simple things that we take so much for granted like the colour yellow or a christmas tree, Ian`s smile beamed from ear to ear . Most of all his unconditional love was a lesson that the very most smartest of us can only dream of. When he passed away aged 25 the world became lesser.

I find this particularly prevalent whist discussing Israel. My ex and daughter are Jewish and subsequently I have a friend left from that relationship that is a zionist. Whenever any criticism comes up in the media a charge of anti-semitism is labeled at the critic. I find it so hard to reach out to her and say that the best way to get your point of view across is not by calling the other person a racist but to listen, take in what there are saying and then point out where they may be mistaken.

Why is it when people who claim not to be religious still celibate religious holiday?
273kelvin comments on Feb 7, 2018:
All christian holidays have pre-christian roots. Much like a sporting event that is sponsored by a large corporation. They are centered around solstice or equinox dates. Christmas or yule tide occurs just after the winter solstice, Traditionally when you would slaughter livestock that you could not feed though the winter. A feast time. Easter A spring equinox festival originally from the fertility goddess Estre or Ostara (root word for estrogen) is celebrated with eggs or rabbits nuff said. I celebrate these holidays as a connection to less modern times.

There would not be much change left after his thirst was quenched. https://theculturetrip.com/europe/united-kingdom/articles/17-phrases-that-only-make-sense-to-scousers/

I live in a socialist city. On the odd occasion when I dare to express a view that might differ from the party line I get shot down in flames. One time I said that Blair was a bad PM. (Two illegal wars and an economy in taters). The defence of Blair was such that reminded me of Liverpool football fans when their striker Luis Suarez bit an opposing player. " It was only a nip...He didn`t mean it " etc. Another issue that I get stick about is fracking. I know you guys in the US have had this for quite a while and also there have been problems. Now we (the UK) have discovered about 50 years of energy under our land. The environmentalists, left and homeowners are totally opposed to any use of fracking. My argument is that we want the lights to go on when we want to but are not too happy if we have to pay the environmental cost. The operative word there is " we " . We, are perfectly ok with energy from other sources like Russian gas or Colombian coal but not if means that we are affected.

273kelvin comments on Feb 5, 2018:
I am quite ambivalent towards sports. Not liking football in my town (Liverpool soccer) is almost tantamount to saying your gay. I will watch the odd game like the word cup or a major final but as an event rather than the sport itself. It is the camaraderie with family or friends that I enjoy. Although I do occasionally watch some cricket or F1.

If you won the lottery,,,
273kelvin comments on Feb 4, 2018:
Here is a true story. This guy drove a cab, not one of those black cabs you see whenever London is seen in a film but a normal car type. Gypsy cabs or the things that Uber uses now but not that new. Anyway he had this regular job to take an old lady to pick up her pension. After a while he did not bother to put it though the books just came at the same time every week and they became friends. When she died she left him her house. Not a big house just 2 up 2 down but a house never the less. Then he won the lottery, not millions but a few hundred thousand. Enough to stop working. So he moved to the suburbs where the golf courses are but he did not fit in. He would find himself down at the taxi office most nights talking to his old mates and swapping taxi stories. After a while he ran out of stories and they all had work to do. So he bought 2 Jaguar cars, drove one as a luxury cab and rented the other to a mate to do the same. Now the moral of this true story is this. That guy was lucky. Not because of the house or the lottery but because he is doing what he likes to do and knew it.
