@Pedrohbds I agree, the last govt to be truly capitalist was Hong Kong before the hand over and even they could not operate without a subsidized public transport system. Perhaps the only true market forces area is now the illegal drug trade. Where price and quality control are all set by supply and demand.

273kelvin replies on Sep 13, 2018:
@Matias The American constitution was if not socialist (the term did not exist at the time) then incredibly radical and egalitarian. It divorced itself from the "evolved" old world order of hierarchy and replaced it with principals of equality. (principals that seem to be lost along the way now. When was the last time a rich white US citizen did any real jail time?) Though not all top down thinking is socialist. Socialism is most definitely "top down". I will give you two examples. When I was growing up in the 1960s, we lived in a council house. This was social housing provided by the municipality. All the front doors, gates, back and shed doors were painted either corporation red or corporation green. The same colours as the municipal buses, park benches and buss stops. No deviation was permitted, any infringement could result in eviction. A drab look but not as absurd as my friends experience. She grew up in East Germany, when the wall came down she finally got to read " Winnie the pooh" in its uncensored form. The character of Tigger had been airbrushed because he was deemed to be too subversive. Socialism and religion do have one thing in common. They both involve some guy above you thinking they know better you how to live your life.
Capitalism works on much the same principle as evolution.

273kelvin replies on Sep 13, 2018:
These "distortions" are necessary. Capitalism unchecked will wreak havoc. It is cyclical and has no morals. The depression of the 1930s was like a plague and any govt that would not wish to combat that would be akin to not wanting to combat a typhus epidemic. Just as we (in the 1st world) have waste water systems that prevent cholera instigated and maintained by the state. So we have "socialist" systems in place to promote growth and limit the damage of a totally free market. Best described by a joke; A vicar is walking past an old gardener working in a most beautiful garden and says to him. "Isnt god wonderful? Just look what he can make" The old man smiles and replies. "Yeah but he is one hell of a messy bastard if you just leave him to it"

Realistically, were there no genuine guys out there in all the months they have been on? Or did they reject them early?

Is it time for us to be a political force?
Dandewine comments on Sep 11, 2018:
I think it is the time to be a political force and I don't care if you are on my side or not... but SO MANY LIBERALS (which is me) JUST DON'T VOTE and it pisses me off. You feel you are fighting a losing battle... OK... fight it. Maybe we can surprise them!
273kelvin replies on Sep 12, 2018:
I must admit to being guilty of that myself. I did not vote for nearly a decade. In mitigation, I was off the grid for a long time and I lived in the safest Labor seat in the country then moved to the 2nd safest. (Our electoral system is 1st past the post and any other votes dont count). I changed my mind when my daughter turned 18 and could not be bothered to vote either. Interestingly voting numbers have shot up since we had a radical candidate. Jeremy Corbyn is an unrepentant leftie and the turnout at the last election was nearly 70%, the highest for 25 years. Although he did not win, he did come close and made it hard for the Conservatives govern with a free hand. Trump for all his faults may galvanize people into the voting booths. Love him or hate him (I am of the latter) its hard not to have an opinion.

There was a time in the 70s when UK stand-up comedians would not touch upon politics. Theory being that whichever side you choose you would alienate a large section of the audience. That changed in the 80s with a new school of comedy The issue here is one of numbers. I was quite shocked to hear only 545 federal members of the legislator. The UK has 650 elected commons MPs (Plus about 800 lords with restricted voting rights.). Now I appreciate that much of the work of govt will be done at a state level but look at the difference. UK one per 68,000 vs US 432,000. This is prime time TV vs 1am PBS. Of course only MOR or those that go for the biggest demographic will succeed. Perhaps it is time to ditch party allegiances and vote for the most secular candidate?

@skado Just as in gunpowder, it is unnecessary to know its origins to avoid its effects. It matters little whether it was invented by the Chinese for entertainment. We simply need to duck and take cover. A mechanic or automotive engineer will have no need of the knowledge that the spark plug came from Voltaires pistol, as a method of igniting gasses. Anymore than you need to know that crazy glue was invented as a battlefield temporary suture, when fixing your sandals. A victim of domestic abuse need not take any notice of the intentions of their abuser. It is in fact counter productive to give any credence to the words "But I really love you". It is the effect and usage of a system that counts. The road to hell may be paved with good intentions but when the bombs start flying. What care I from whence they came. It may be lost like the origins of the Hatfield and McCoy feud. It is as irrelevant as a New York Times article to a swatted fly. All religions, yes all religions are hell bent on telling you how to live your life. However benign the motivation, it is always someone who thinks they know better than you what you should do. The fact that this is usurped and taken to control human behavior is inevitable as day follows night.

"Oh my 1st gig was the Stones there too but the support was Ike and Tina Turner". One upped. Though the best gig story I heard was from an old American guy I met via my ex. He had re-married and they had been traveling. Consequently he was without any music so I sent him a jazz mix tape. He then sent me a thank you letter with this tale. " Dear Kelvin thank you for the tape and its so apt that that you included ....... ... It was before the war and me and my cousin used to sneak out to 42nd st and visit a small club. We were both only 14 but so long as we ordered a coke and sat on the floor no one bothered us. Then one night my cousin said "lets go somewhere else." I argued that we could get in our usual place but he was all up for trying elsewhere. So we snuck passed the guys on the door and went down into this small jazz club. Who was playing? Billie Holiday"

They say things like "Hi babe your sexy etc." then get you to talk off-site You will get some glamour pics. Then comes "I really want to meet you but can you join this validation site 1st. So I can be safe. Just give your credit card # but its free" African ones They say they live in your country but for some reason are in Africa working in health care or with animals. These are going for the long con. They might be after a green card but likely as not you will pay the fare
