True John Newton was a slave ship captain but he already was a christian. (christianity had no problem with slavery. In fact it was viewed as the white mans burden to bring it to negroes). Later he became a staunch abolitionist but amazing grace was not initially written about this. He was shipwrecked off the coast of Africa and rescued, hence the " saved. "

Hallelujah has a firm basis in the bible with the two love stories at the start. Cohen was far from secular. He may not have been a practicing jew but he spent a long time in other religions, even scientology at one point. Then 9 years as a zen buddhist monk. I noticed on the sleeve notes of " Dear Heather " he spelt god as g-d as any good jew would. Also his last album is deeply religious, with a chorus taken from the kaddish and " I`m ready my lord. "

So he changed his stance to honor her wishes. The victims families were split into two camps. Whilst the pros thought that execution would bring about some form of closure, it did not. Plus (from what I gleen) there may well have been others involved in this atrocity but one avenue of inquiry is now closed.

I cry at all kinds movies up to and including " Rocky. " The 1st 20 mins of " saving " is like a lot of Spielberg's work. Just as in " Who framed Roger rabbit " where the cartoon sequence top loads a whole bunch of laughs at the beginning. " Saving " has about the most harrowing action shots you will see in cinema. After watching " five came back " and subsequently John Houston's " San Pietro. " I can see where Spielberg got a lot of his ideas from. For me this does not detract from how good the film is but rather adds to it. In " five came back " we learn that both John Ford and John Houston were there at d-day and filmed it. Most of what they shot could not be shown as (even for todays jaded audiences) it was much too graphic. However it does throw light on their post war works.

In time, the needle (which is actually very small - you can see in this image that only a tiny part toches the record) does in fact wear the record. One record that definitely wore out was " White christmas " by Bing Crosby. In those days recordings were made directly to disc. This was then the " master " and they would then play the master to copy it on to the records that you would buy. Unfortunately or fortunately depending, they sold so many records that the master wore out and Bing had to re-record it

What do you think about this saying "there is someone for everyone?" Is it true or BS?
RobAnybody comments on Mar 21, 2018:
It's BS based on a religious idea of predestination. That said it feels like people who are a good fit with my world view are "the one". This, of course, changes as my world view (or theirs, or both) changes.
273kelvin replies on Mar 21, 2018:
Predestination is not just the prerogative of religion. There are sound secular arguments that support it too. In the romantic, You end up with your high school sweetheart or a co-worker in much the same bracket of attractiveness as yourself. Political and science, Marx took the view that society forms a breeding ground for ideas rather than ideas shape society. For example the telephone, if Bell had not patented it then another guy was 20 mins behind him.
