She would probably had the popular vote for a long time. We could opt for your system in Ireland where the president is largely titular but what would be the point? More elections? The duty thing matters, she does not have to DO anything other than hold the keys for 2 minutes when the PM changes, yet she does. A very old lady now who still works hard, travelling to openings etc. Most people would be content to sit on a beach somewhere at her age but....that`s duty. Like it or loath it. It`s not just on the right which has entrenched views. Here in Liverpool it`s the left, we have had a labour council in since the 80`s no one will say a word against them. Even though we can see our neighbors in Manchester forging ahead and Blair appointed the former S. Yorkshire ass chief constable in charge of Hillsborough as top cop for merseyside. Talk about being taken for granted. Up until the rise of Corbyn the white working class have felt steadily disenfranchised. Hence the rise of UKIP.

273kelvin replies on Feb 8, 2018:
Firstly climate change is not in dispute even by the GOP it is an undeniable fact the the earth is experiencing a change in climate. The part is disputed by the GOP is how much if any is being caused by mankind, more specifically greenhouse gases and CO2 in particular. The vast majority of the scientific community say that it is. Now I know that the race does not always go to the swift or the strong but thats where the smart money is. Even if it is not a done deal think of it like Pascals wager. If the scientists are right and we do nothing we are fucked. If theyre wrong and we do nothing no change. If theyre right and we act then we might halt or at least slow it down till we can figure something out. If theyre wrong and we do something well we havent really lost anything. Those fossil fuels will still be there for our grandkids and we will have a whole shed load of renewables to lesson our heating bills. Not only that but we wont have to butt kiss Arab kingdoms, Russian oligarchies or banana republics to get it. Secondly I happen to know that you are a god botherer and whilst not fundamental you at least share the view that the bible is Symbolic. God told Noah to save all the animals in the world. I cannot remember him ever saying " Oh thats soo last year. I don't give a shit about them now. Do what you like ". We are destroying whole species at a genocidal rate. Meanwhile alt right Christian fundamentalists actively want the world to end. If they arent actually plotting for it they don't really care what happens in the meantime so long as we all tow the party line and persecute gays. In short just because your the underdog doesnt make you any more right than the other guy. If that were true then I would jump off the edge of a flat earth !

273kelvin replies on Feb 8, 2018:
@BanjoTango Okay so lets see if I have this right. All banknotes are secured by debt. Including presumably those issued by the Royal bank of Scotland which had to be bailed out. So they`re like a poker players markers. The govt gives a load of them out to be used as currency but backs them up with bigger ones that they hand out to high rollers at a small rate of interest. Now these high rollers have to buy some them because they are banks and they tenfold any deposit in loans, so they are mandated to spread the risk. Some are insurance and pension funds who also spread bet. Where does this money come from? Well some are the small markers that govts issue but most is from the financial services ie. digital money that comes from banks which lend out at 10/1. Don`t worry though because the govts back all their debts even though most run on a deficit (the news tonight said that the US would fall short by 1 trillion this year and that`s just the budget not its debt). Now lets just suppose that some of the players want to cash out. That`s fine so long as there are players to replace them but not if a significant number do. If everyone wants their pound flesh or any others assets available then you get Zimbabwe or Wehrmacht republic. The preferred govt is elected and a currency is worth more if not it drops. This is because investors lose FAITH in the govt to pay its way.

Here is a drawing of 17s 6d change ". All currency is faith based with the possible exception of a krugerrand. As faith increases its value goes up or as after brexit faith declines, it goes down. It gets even crazier when you look at the banking system. For every £100 deposited the bank lends out £1,000, that is if it is conservative. The banking crisis of 2008 was partially caused by banks lending at 30 times its deposits. Oh and when you borrow £1000 to buy something like a car and it goes into a bank, it counts as a new $1,000 so they can lend £10,000.

@GipsyOfNewSpain Cricket is similar but it`s built on class. Traditionally it would be played on the village green . The manor house vs the village. This extended into the 1950`s where participants would be divided into " gentlemen and players " ie. amature or profesional. In " Raffles the gentleman thief " the hero only steals so he can still play cricket for the MCC as a gentleman. Once unmasked the shame is so great that goes off to the Boar war and is killed. That is the upper class view, us lower classes look at it as an opportunity to get back at them. Also as a spectator you can drink beer all day in the (hopefully) sunshine and when I say all day it`s from 10.30am till the light fails (play is suspended twice for meals to be taken). Points are not something that I have set out to acquire. They are simply what I have accrued by interacting on here. Much like a golf handicap or chess ranking. However I can see the logic of giving more trustworthy members the responsibilities of a, being able to post without vetting and b, vetting other posts. It does make for an more easier, self-governing site. PS I use the term " trustworthy " not because I am any better than others. Only in so much that I have not been proven to be a troll

I went to see a guy called Rar Mears give a lecture. He talked about the aboriginals of the northern territories (Australia) and of how he met this old guy who had killed 3 Japanese with his spear. In the 30`s an anthropologist called William Edward Hanley Stanner was sent to talk to the aboriginals because the Japanese were taking giant sea snails and they (aboriginals) were killing the Japanese because sea snails were a major food source. Later on when WW2 was happening Australia was invaded (a little known event) and the only thing that stood in their way were the indigenous people of the northern territories. Again Stanner was sent out tell them " You know those yellow fellas I said not to kill. Well.... "

The choice is a mute point. As with religion and politics much depends on your upbringing. I have lost count of the times I have heard a guy say that the only things he can talk about with his dad are sports. It rightly or wrongly is also one of the few things that can bring a community together. The only decent joke that any politician has made in my lifetime, was by the (then) mayor of London Boris Johnson about the olympics. " This has brought about an unprecedented turns of events. Who would have believed that total strangers would actually talk to each other on the tube! " I am also reminded of the political and judicial events around the Hillsborough 96. A stadium tragedy which affected my city but united a community in pursuit of justice. please google it as the story is too long to repeat here. https://youtu.be/gjMZAKvMTQI

@WilliamCharles Okay let me try and explain myself. Firstly I am not Jewish. However my daughter is because her mum is. Consequently I can see things from both perspectives. There is a saying that youre not paranoid if everyone IS out to get you. The history of the Jews is such that everywhere they have made a home (USA excepted but who knows) they have been driven out and persecuted. England,Spain,France, Istanbul, Morocco, Tunisia, Russia, Austria, Germany and Poland sorry if I have missed any out but you get the point. A jew of any persuasion atheist or not would have to be an idiot not to be a zionist. (They did not ask you if you believed in god or not when they loaded up the cattle trucks and put a tattoo on your wrist). Israel was born out of the holocaust and it is no accident that their flag is the same colours as the camp uniforms. I visited there in 95, two encounters stuck me. One was a lady who had three sons all serving in the military. Her wish for peace was as pure and heartfelt as any mothers would be in that situation. The second was my girlfriends mum who unbidden answered the question " why does did she choose to live there? ...Its the only place in the world where Im not a bloody Jew " . No small wonder that they do not look on criticism of Israel with the same eyes as others and often view it as anti-semitic especially as all its neighbors are far far worse.

@WilliamCharles Okay your right under that definition but also under that definition is ; Morocco, Tunisia , Libya, Egypt, Jordan,Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran and if it ever happens the state of Palestine All of which had Jewish communities which were appropriated and offer no right of return. In the case of a Palestinian state no right of entry either. Okay I do not say that all is well in the state of Israel far from it but let us look a the beam in our own eye for a moment. Since the invasion of Iraq there have been 500,000 deaths directly as a result, yes half a million. Which the USA and My govt are responsible for. Whilst Jewish claims to the land may be tenuous at best, they tend to look like cast iron contracts compared WOMD. Not only that but we (the US and UK govts) continue butt kiss Saudi Arabia. (that bastion of democracy). That state sponsors terrorism and is bombarding Yemen with weapons we quite happily sell them as I type this. And yes it was going on whilst Obama was in charge too. Israel has been on a war footing for decades now. In any situation like that there will inevitably be attosities on both sides. Hawks will be more popular than doves on both sides. I ask you to imagine this. Just how racist and gung ho would the US be if rockets were regularly being fired from Mexico into Texas. Add to this the avowed aim of the protagonists being the total destruction of the USA with active support of many south/latin american govts. If your answer is " Oh no we would not be as bad " then I suggest you try and book a flight to Cuba and see how far you get. (Guantanamo bay does not count).

Why feed the world when you can more efficiently feed just a small elite, with less environmental impact? Then what of the arts or sport? Where would they be without emotion?
