My local atheist meetup is heavy on old white guys who want to argue about stuff. But also includes some 30-something folks who have become very good friends. Often, a casual meet up is planned with a book or question or topic to get the conversation rolling. A couple of my friends went to a non-religious “church” service, held in an actual church. They found it weird. They sang pop songs and there was some kind of “sermon” but I don’t remember what about.

The legal drinking age

I think no adult should be penalized for drinking or possessing alcohol. I do think that the issue caused by having 18 as the legal drinking age is that, an 18-year-old might be inclined to share with their younger classmates, where a 21 year old would rarely provide alcohol to a 14 or 15-year old. My solution would be to decriminalize consumption and possession, allow 18-year-olds to be served at bars and restaurants but keep the age to buy and take alcohol at 21.

Why are so many people so seldom persuaded by clear evidence and rational argument?

My neighborhood is a cooperative. All of the residents buy a membership which allows them to live in a unit. We elect a board of 5 people who make the budget and policies and oversee the management, who run the cooperative on a day-to-day basis.

Yes, you start a movement by addressing the most egregious harms. Then when people begin to accept that even those who are different from you deserve to be treated as human beings, then you begin to educate people about the ways that smaller acts can hurt others.
