My ex usually skipped the “honeymoon” phase unless this one offense justified leaving him - the notion that I might leave for persistent, repeated violations of my rights and needs was ridiculous. But after our divorce was final he claimed his apartment had toxic mold and begged to stay with me “temporarily.” I, stupidly, allowed it. He begged me to take him back and I told him I needed to “see the change” before I committed. A few weeks later I discovered that he had picked the lock on my safe and cleaned me out,as well as stealing every dollar he could find in our teenage son’s room. All told, close to $1000. At that point I kicked him out and he threatened suicide because “I” made him homeless. A couple months later he claimed a brain tumor. About a year after that, he told me his girlfriend was pregnant then asked me to give him another chance.

It’s common for abusers to isolate - it helps them to project an image that is different from the reality, and to prevent the social capital that would allow you to escape. My ex didn’t TELL me to shut people out of my life - he emotionally manipulated me instead. When I did anything that wasn’t about him and his needs, he pouted and gave me the silent treatment (without ever SAYING what he was mad about.) When we were out together in any situation that wasn’t one-on-one he sulked and sighed and let me know he didn’t want to be there. Eventually it was easier to not go out, to not see people, to rush out of our kids’ events without socializing and to not have anyone close except him.

Individual people or actions can be biased against men but they don’t contribute to the ongoing sexism in our society, that routinely treats women as lesser, as objects for male use/pleasure, and of lower value as human beings. The default of most things in society is still male. There is a presumption that maleness and the way things “have always been done” is innately superior. So, while misandry is not nice and is harmful, it does not happen on a scale that systemically disadvantages men the way that misogyny does.
