I watched an academic documentary about the decision to turn off life support. It was produced for medical students to help them explain options to relatives. In recent years there have been a number of famous cases involving young children. I understand they caused contraversy in USA because children belong to parents in UK where as they don't here. Anyway they interviewed families who had taken the decision to turn off life support (assisted suicide of a sort). Most moved forward but notably a few families couldn't. One guy said, it is easy to say what you would do but you never know and that is the best way to view it. I can't imagine ever wanting to leave this world, but you never know.

I fled USA the first time a 6 year old in my daughter's class, brought a gun to school (his Dad had sold it to another kid's Dad and the exchange happened at school!) I am against assisted suicide. As a nurse, I have seen suffering too, however no person is an island and I think there is no real way to be sure that this is the individual's own desires or someone elses'. Already in some countries, we are seeing assisted suicide of the mentally ill, children and I even read about someone who was intractably obese being assisted to end his life (assisted as he wasn't able to). I think it is a very quick leap to 'assist' those 'undesirables' in society. I cannot comment on someone taking their own life, that is a personal choice but we never have the right to assist someone to end theirs. People are not sophisticated enough.

Yes I am a British senior clinical practitioner (sort of advanced nurse) : I don't work as a fulltime nurse now but as a band 7, I would earn about £42,000. Thats basic, there is about another £8k in enhancements. I actually took a huge drop in salary to come into education fulltime. An FY1 (First year intern doctor) earns £40k. Depending on speciality, area and trust a senior consultant can earn up to about £200k a year. There is NO requirement for us to have personal litigation insurance as this is generally covered by employers and unions. The NHS has up to 8 weeks paid annual leave, we get paid sick and have fabulous pensions. The university where I work isn't anywhere near as generous.

I think it is very fortunate that I will never be judged on the stupid things I did as a youngster, but saying that, I would NEVER have done something so overtly racist. Dave this 100% racist and utterly ignorant. In UK less than 10% of the population is 100% caucasian. There is far more genetic divergence within races than between them. I am sorry to nag especially when you have been unwell but GET YOUR FLU SHOT! Remember this test, its called the '£50 pound note test'. If it started raining £50 pound notes (insert your nation's currency of equivilent value) and you are too unwell to get up and get them, you have flu. If you can gather them, even if it takes all your effort, you have a cold. Influenza kills and is contagious. It is especially harsh on the very young and the very old. It is also dsngerous for those in risk groups (diabetes, hashimotos etc). As a nurse, let me urge anyone here over 50...just get it done.

I have seen and heard some dreadful things in my time, but sometimes, something hits me and rocks my world. Its at those times I realise how squishy I actually am. I knew when I felt compassion fatigue from listening to the same dreadful story of sexual abuse and 50 ligature events that day, when I cut off ligatures and bound lacerated wrists without missing a beat, I needed a change.
