Amisja comments on Sep 29, 2018:
I tried to explain to my partner how often men are the biggest threat to women. One entire half of the population of the human race is a potential threat to the other (and themselves...yeah, I know). Murder of women by women is relatively unusual. Last week a group of 5 young men surrounded me on a street corner and asked me the way to the library. New students from another country, culturally unaware but even as an older woman I momentarily felt terrified. It took too long to explain, they wouldn't go and why did they circle me? I am usually a confident, outspoken person but just at that moment I was a teenage girl fighting off unwanted advances. I think men need to really understand that maleness, strength and confidence, although attractive are also potentially threatening. Simply put no always means no.

This post sounded so much more pitiful than was intended. Certainly not meant as a 'woe is me'. I just got an email from a student at 10pm with alsorts of personal problems. She ended her email with 'I bet you are missing us' (they are all out of clinical placement). It really hit home, like all these people really believe I live for their benefit. My Dad calls me in the middle of work with demands, my sons constantly need something. My partner just lives in a world of muddles and I am pushed from pillar to post. My brother has an aquired brain injury so he is the only one who really needs help. Colleagues turn up with dress making disasters and ask for me to repair stuff. (I'll get you a bottle of wine Jayne!) I agree with Tillia we all need to down tools, its just so hard sometimes. I thought I needed a prince Charming to take me away from all this but what I actually need is a 30 hour day, four brains and eight arms!

Is your workplace atheist friendly.
Amisja comments on Aug 30, 2018:
In the UK a nurse was disciplined for wearing a cross. In both my jobs, clinical practice and as a university lecturer, religion is not considered appropriate or helpful. In fact I know only one lecturer who describes herself as a Christian and she swears like a trooper! One lecturer who is muslim who is also very irreverent. Discussing religion with students outside of a purely educational setting would probably get the person sacked. I have two of my home group students who are Christian (out of 18), one guy who is ('loosely' his words) hindu, one pagan and the rest are non-religious. I only know this because we briefly discussed it during an end of life session. In fact it is such a non issue, its a little bit odd if someone states they are religious.
Anyone have advice on how to come out ofthe atheist closet?
Amisja comments on Aug 28, 2018:

Hi all thank you for your replies. My brother has an acquired brain injury and lives in what they call a 'perpetual dream state'. As a result he cannot differentiate dreams from reality. It is really scary and confusing for him. This leads him to believe he has eaten when he hasn't and at 6ft tall he weighs less than 58kgs (thats about 130lbs). He developed Sepsis that did not respond to antibiotics but somehow he's hung on. (Thank you amazing NHS). Now he just needs to gain weight which is a challenge.

Amisja comments on Jul 5, 2018:
Of course the death rate is higher than the birthrate. There is a falling birth rate in most Western countries. In the US you have alsorts of additional problems such as gun crime and poor health care which results in increasing deaths, especially across certain groups. Sadly, in addition you have problems with poor diet, large number of RTAs and access to opiod prescription pain relief and street drugs. In some countries such as Italy and New Zealand the fall in the birth rate is actually becoming national problems. Basically we are living longer and are having fewer babies. I believe statistically, the birth rate in Italy is actually less than 1 live birth per household. This is a natural result of countries becoming wealthier, safer (overall) and educating women. Obviously the flip side of this is we have a lot more older and potentially dependant people. History has shown over and over again that population controls do not work. So leave well alone and look after the people sharing the world with you today.
