@Lorajay the Second surgery, 3 years ago, "worked", as in, the glue didn't fail after just a few weeks like the first one, but the massive amount of scar tissue caused by re-opening the entire knee before the first surgery came close to being healed will never get better, it will Never stop swelling, hurting, clicking audibly, twisting unpredictably, & generally being unhelpful, the next (only!) step would be amputation....I think I will live with it "as is"

There was one about how living in an iron lung (after polio) wasn't so bad, there were lots about how we should leave Dad strictly alone when he got home at night, "special" ones for either boys or girls...& not what you think! How to dress & act modestly & be "feminine": compliant, smile no matter what, be a good cook, thrifty, sew, be admiring of males etc etc etc. Then there was "Duck & Cover", which we actually practiced a bunch afterwards. They showed footage from the actual atom bomb tests in the Southwest,then demonstrated how we could save ourselves. After seeing that footage, even as a 4th grader, I Seriously doubted it would help!!!!!! I think it instilled a lifelong skepticism about a lot of things. The other thing was, my area was at the time home of the only Submarine-building facility in the USA, as well as the only dedicated large home port for them...not bothering to survive was a Good Idea, nobody had bomb shelters, just too silly......

His female clerk quietly told me in Connecticut, for $150, you can have any name you want, just go see your Town Clerk. I took the name of my favorite fictional character, Lord Peter Wimsey, from the writer Dorothy L Sayers. Just sign an affidavit that you have no intent to decieve, the Town Clerk submits with the $150 to the Probate Court, & in 6 +/- weeks take your notarized name-change papers to DMV, Social Security, and etc. I went in very hesitantly, and the clerks burst into laughter. They told me every week they have one or more women asking to change their names, some of them flop open a phone book (kept there for the purpose!) & randomly point.
