@Jolanta I know you are in Australia, so you may not know about the programs for people in the USA, so I will respond to your points: >You know what, how about educating them instead of making them feel less than they already feel. I was in college prep courses, so I took Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Trig. Calculus, etc. but the people who were not destined for college took Basic Math and Consumer Math. Consumer math is specifically designed to help people make wise buying decisions. We were also required to take a course called Consumerism which gave you advice for grocery shopping, clothes shopping, car shopping, banking etc. There were also multiple home economics classes that were available in my high school. I never took them because I was focused on getting in to a top university, but several students in the top ten of my high school class padded their GPAs by getting all As in those simple courses. >Or how about people in the US get a living wage, that would help. I know Australia does a lot more to protect the wages of its workers than the USA does. I was interested in faculty positions in Australia, and the Universities pretty much had to prove no Australians could do the work before a foreigner could come in to do it. The USA has never had policies nearly as restrictive on foreign workers as Australia had. Those policies in the USA would definitely keep wages up. The actions Donald Trump is trying to take (limiting unskilled low-cost workers from illegally entering the USA) would benefit US workers a great deal, but he's being vilified for it. > Do you honesty think that it can be achievable. It probably could if they limited the products that could be sold at food stamp stores, WalMart would likely be able to stock those items for very cheap.

@Jolanta What they need to do is have stores "Food Stamp Certified" and have their shelves stocked only with healthy, nutritious, reasonably priced food. People with food stamps could only shop at those stores for those products. That will keep them from using their food stamp money to buy pop tarts, Doritos chips, soft drinks, etc.

@Jolanta I'm a single father. I run a business. I cook my kids bacon, fried eggs, and milk in the morning before they go to school. At night I fix my kids spaghetti, marinara sauce with chicken sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc. If I can do all of that, run a business, take care of three kids, one with special needs, and still fix those meals for my kids, why can't someone who is unemployed, and collecting food stamps do the same? Is it the fault of capitalists that they cannot make those decisions and take those actions?

@Jolanta It looks like you have conceded that capitalism makes it possible to feed a very poor child for 74 cents per day, and who made it possible? Sam Walton, the ultimate retail capitalist. You are now falling back on another false statement, that it's not possible for people in poor areas to get access to all that cheap food at WalMarts. That can easily be proven to be false by using the WalMart store finder. If you search Chicago, IL, you will see that the WalMarts are evenly distributed throughout the Chicago area. So Capitalism makes it possible to provide the cheap food. Capitalism brings the cheap food to every part of the USA, and Capitalism provides the money for the generous safety net that makes it possible to give poor families way more money that what is necessary to feed the poor children. I believe I have made my point. https://www.walmart.com/store/finder?location=Chicago%2C%20IL=50

@Jolanta Please go to walmart.com and type in "eggs". You will see you can get eggs for 5.5 cents each. Then type "milk". You can get a gallon of milk for $1.28 or a glass of milk for 8 cents. So a child an have a breakfast of 2 eggs and a glass of milk for: 5.5 cents + 5.5 cents + 8 cents = 19 cents. Now repeat for a pound of spaghetti; 82 cents, and 24 ounces of spaghetti sauce 88 cents. So a child can have a quarter pound of spaghetti and 4 ounces of spaghetti sauce for: 82/4 + 88/6 = 36 cents. Then you can throw in 2 more eggs and a glass of milk for 19 cents. So a very poor child in the USA could get the following: Breakfast: 2 eggs and a glass of milk 19 cents (or free breakfast at school) Lunch: free lunch at school Dinner: 1/4 pound of spaghetti 4 ounces of spaghetti sauce 36 cents plus 2 more eggs and a glass of milk (19 cents). So on a weekday, that child can be fed a diet high in protein and carbs for 19 + 36 + 19 cents = 74 cents. There should be plenty of extra money left over from welfare, food stamps, food banks etc. to buy the child fruits, vegetables, multivitamins etc. Capitalism and the safety net are what make it possible to feed a kid for 74 cents on a weekday. The fact that parents are too stupid to do those calculations and properly feed their child for 74 cents per day is not the fault of capitalism, it's the fault of the parents.

There were almost no fat kids. Today most of the kids are fat. When I visit my daughter's grade school, I don't see any kids who appear to be starving. A good portion of them are overweight.

@Paul4747 There was no change in business ethos in the 1950's. Go back in the history books and see what they were doing to miners and factory workers in the 1920's and 1930's. Do you think executives were bastards for a hundred years, they suddenly became nice and caring in the 1950's, then they went right back to being bastards again? It was all about supply and demand. After WWII, every other developed country in the world had its industrial infrastructure bombed out. Stalin and Mao had most of the world's potential industrial workers behind the Iron and Bamboo curtains, so if you wanted to manufacture something, you had to manufacture it in the USA. I grew up in a factory town. Back in the 1950's a kid in my hometown could drop out of high school at age 16, go to work for Caterpillar, then retire with a nice pension and benefits at age 50. That's has never happened before in the history of the world. What killed the worker's paradise? The Marshall Plan taxed the US individuals and corporations at ridiculously high rates, and sent the money overseas so they could build factories to compete with us. Then when we "Won" the Cold War, it was all over, you didn't have to give an unskilled guy in the USA a nice salary, benefits, and pension when there were billions of workers overseas who would work for dirt cheap.

@Paul4747 Income inequality is a bullshit metric that will always keep you upset with the status quo. In the 1960's an unskilled factory worker in the USA made great wages because if a capitalist wanted something produced, he pretty much had to do it here, and the labor supply was limited. In 1989, when the Iron Curtain and the Bamboo Curtains fell, the global supply of unskilled labor increased by a factor of 5 or 6. For the past 30 years, unskilled laborers in the USA have had to compete against laborers around the world willing to work for $1 per hour or less. We can't go back to the Cold War situation, so there is little that can be done other than create the most business friendly environment we can in the USA. On the flipside, if you wanted to sell something to people, you had to open up a store and staff your store with people. Then in 1993, the Internet changed all that, Jeff Bezos (the world's richest man) can sell products to billions of people using computer code. That has put millions of shopkeepers out of business. We can't go back and get rid of the Internet. So there is no way to eliminate the competition from foreign labor on the low end of the income distribution, and there is no way to eliminate the "winner take all" effect on the high end of the income distribution. What you can do help people at the low end is to eliminate dirt-cheap unskilled labor from entering the country, you can do everything possible to build up our manufacturing industries (including negotiating more fair trade policies), and you can focus our safety net resources on people who are legal citizens and residents. Trump is doing all these things to help the poor in the USA, and the left is vilifying him for it.

BD66 replies on Jan 30, 2019:
@Jolanta There were 5 sub prime lending crises between 1865 and 1930. (That's an average of once every 13 years). Congress (being not 100% brain dead) saw the pattern and put in place protections to prevent future sub prime lending crises, one of them involved not making loans in the part of town where home prices would most likely depreciate. Then in the late 1970's Carter and a Democratic Congress came up with the "Community Reinvestment Act" which was directly contrary to the protections adopted in the 1930's. The "Community Reinvestment Act" had no teeth, so the banks ignored it for 15+ years. In early 1995, just before the Republican Congress swept into power, Clinton and a Democratic Congress put enforcement provisions into the Community Reinvestment Act forcing banks to make risky loans if they wanted to merge or open up new branches, so they kick-started subprime lending. Then the 1995 HUD directive of (Henry Cisneros/Bill Clingon) forced Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to buy up the risky loans, thereby creating a secondary market for subprime loans. The Democrats forced the banks to make bad loans, They forced public/private companies to buy up the loans. The banks made profits by issuing then selling the bad loans, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made profits as long as the properties increased in value, then exactly 13 years later (in 2008) the subprime lending bubble popped just like it popped 5 times in the 65 year time span from 1865 to 1930. The taxpayers were left holding the bag.

If you cloned 100 Michael Phelps and 100 Usain Bolts and trained them for swimming and sprinting, they would not all achieve the success Phelps and Bolt did, but enough of them would enjoy tremendous success as youth athletes that they would stick with it and many would make it to the Olympic Games. In his worst Olympic Games as an adult, when Michael Phelps (only) won 4 golds and 2 silvers, he said "You get out of it what you put into it, and I only put enough into it to win 4 golds and 2 silvers"

@DoctoralZombie In his own teenage years and early 20s, Phillips, using his adoptive name Nathaniel R. Stanard, was charged with escaping from prison, assault, and several alcohol-related crimes, according to local news reports at the time from his hometown of Lincoln, Neb. Phillips, who was 19 at the time, was “charged with escaping from the Nebraska Penal Complex where he was confined May 3,” according to a May 9, 1974, article in the Lincoln Star. The court approved a bond of $500 and set a preliminary hearing for May 14. Later that year, Phillips pleaded guilty to assault and was fined $200. He also was charged with underage possession of alcohol in 1972, 1973 and 1975, as well as negligent driving, the Examiner reported. In August 1973, a charge of destruction of property against him was dropped, but he was sentenced to a year of probation for a related charge of alcohol possession by a minor. In December 1978, Phillips was charged with driving without a license. Phillips was charged on March 9, 2004 in Mohave, Arizona for driving at a speed greater than reasonable or prudent, and for failure to produce evidence of financial responsibility. He was then charged with No Mandatory Insurance on July 4, 2004. On all three charges, the disposition is recorded as “Failure To Appear.” And no I'm not afraid of brown people. My girlfriend is brown. She was born in the Phillipines. I've also played in basketball leagues with lots of current or former Division 1 basketball players. Most of them were African American. I wasn't afraid of them either. I wish I could still play like that, but that's another story.

@OtherPatrick I'm certainly not afraid of an old man with a drum. Let me tell you about one of my best friends from high school, Allen Brooks. Allen Brooks was adopted by two white parents. He was half white and half Native American. He was 6'2" 185 pounds and he and I played basketball together for many years. Just after Allen Brooks graduated from high school, a teacher at the school who was ~45 years old, 6'5" and 230 pounds said "Hey Brooks, how is your dyke sister?" My friend Allen proceeded to beat the guy to a pulp. Everybody in my home town thought it was funny that the jackass teacher who called Allen's younger sister a dyke got exactly what he deserved. The police knew about it, but they didn't do a thing because that was small town justice in the 1980's. If Allen Brooks, a group of my high school friends, and I were standing where the Covington Catholic kids were standing, and Nathan Phillips had gone into our group beating his drum moving one way after another through the crowd forcing one kid after another to move out of the way, then came up to Allen Brooks and starting beating a drum in his face, I can guarantee you with 100% certainty that Allen Brooks would have hit him right on the chin and dropped him. Nathan Phillips would have received exactly the small town justice he deserved for trying to intimidate a group of high school kids. Personally, I don't know how I would react if that old jackass had approached me hollering and beating a drum in my face. I would most likely hold my arm out to keep him at a distance and preserve my personal space. If he struck my arm with his drumstick, I would have likely shoved him back. I think Nick Sandman handled the situation as well as or better than I would have if I was in his shoes. The only thing he could have done better was to gesture to Nathan Phillips that there was plenty of room to go past him on the left or the right.

@redbai These are not random videos, they are presented in sequence of the entire incident from start to finish. It's clear the boys were very far apart from Nathan Phillips engaged in some form of group cheers. It's also clear Nathan Phillips approached the boys and forced one after another of them to move out of his way until one boy stood his ground. It will be interesting to see how the school responds. They sent the boys as a group to DC to protest, then a (bullshit little) conflict occurred that is being blown way out of proportion. It will be interesting to see if the school backs the boys or throws the boys under the bus. Hopefully the school officials with have spines and stand with the boys rather than Nathan Phillips who tried (unsuccessfully) to provoke them.

@Maindawg Read Nathan Phillip's description of events, then watch the videos. You can come to only one conclusion. Nathan Phillips is a liar. He's completely 100% full of shit. The boys handled the situation about as well as you could expect them to handle it when they were in the middle of doing their school songs and Phillips walked into the middle of the group banging his drum and forcing one boy after another to move out of his way.

@snytiger6 I grew up on an Angus cattle farm. The cattle ate grass all summer and hay and oats all winter. The steaks and burgers were fantastic. Once I got to college and tasted the awful stuff they served to students, I almost lost all my taste for beef.

I believe he approached them banging his drum forcing them to move out of the way. Their clapping along and chanting along was a reasonable response to the situation. You have two groups with opposing political views that encountered each other in a non violent way. The media is trying to make the Catholic boys into Duke Lacrosse 2.0. Nathan Phillips is trying to make himself into Clock Boy 2.0.

@Hathacat Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said at the department’s press conference that the polar bear population increased from "a low of about 12,000 in the late 1960s to approximately 25,000 today." But the size of the world’s polar bear population is subject to much debate. There are roughly twice as many polar bears living in the wild today as there were when I was born. Wild polar bears live up to about 20, so every year 1250 polar bears die for some reason (disease, starvation, etc.) So every year there is the opportunity to take 1250 photos that to you will be the "saddest thing" But there are twice as many polar bears living today as there were 50 years ago.

Have you read Ayn Rand's books. How could you conclude that her political theory requires altruism from all individuals. Didn't Howard Roark blow up the skyscraper? Didn't the people in Atlas Shrugged bail on the bulk of humanity to go live in their little Shangri-La of competent individuals?

@maturin1919 Well by all means build a commercial building with solar panels on it. If you are correct, you will have a huge advantage over the people who don't use that technology. If you are incorrect, you will lose money on a technology that isn't yet cost effective.

@david75090 No I'm saying a corporate tax cut, and a tax cut to most taxpayers, and continued loose monetary policy would have increased the GDP growth rate up close to the rate that our debt is growing, and it would have given us a chance to have our economy grow as fast as our debt and to avoid bankruptcy. That's pretty much what every other Westernd Developed market country is doing. Jerome Powell instead is operating from a playbook that was put in place back in 1913 when the Fed was created, and when our national debt was close to $0 rather than close to $21,700,000,000,000.

You could probably line up all the countries in the world on a line with the tiny wealthy tax havens like: 1 Monaco 168,004 2 Liechtenstein 164,437 3 Luxembourg 101,835 — Bermuda 99,363 4 Switzerland 79,609 — Macau 73,187 on one side and the Communist or recently communist countries on the other side: 66 Venezuela 9,230 77 Cuba 7,815 157 Myanmar 1,242 On one side, you have the least amount of taxation and government control. On the other side you have the most amount of taxation and government control. The USA would fall far closer the tiny tax havens than the collectivist totalitarian states. But the question is: "Why move in the direction of the collectivist totalitarian states with all their poverty and misery rather than move in the directions of the ultra wealthy tiny tax havens?"
