Why was the popular vote so close in the US presidential election?
BD66 comments on Nov 6, 2020:
Polls rely on people to voluntarily comply to give information to the pollster. Trump supporters tend to not trust government, and they tend to not trust pollsters. Then there is the "busy factor". I received multiple calls from pollsters while I was working, and I just hung up the phone. A retired grandmother who sits home watching CNN all day listening to anti-Trump propaganda is more likely to spend the time talking to the pollster about her opinions than someone like me who is running 2 businesses.

Here's the problem. If you repeat a lie often enough, most people will believe it. That's why the majority of people in this county believe they have a friend in the sky. That friend is a 2000 year old Jew who had a mother who was a virgin and a father who created 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars. If they can believe that, it's easy to convince them of bad things about Trump as long as they feed them that information over and over again.

You can look at like a progression from: Almost no government control: The best example would likely be the USA before the Sherman Anti-Trust Act to Complete Government Control: Best examples would be the old USSR during Stalin or the PRC during Mao's time. The conservatives are saying each increase in taxes, government regulation, and government control is taking us from minimal government control (19th century USA) to complete government control (Stalin's USSR or Mao's PRC). Conservatives believe we need to go back the other way and move in the direction of the 19th century USA.

BD66 comments on Sep 19, 2020:
It’s best to look at the issue in terms of supply and demand. During WWII, almost every industrial country in the world had its infrastructure bombed out. The countries were almost bankrupt as well. The United States was the most notable exception. We emerged from the war with a large portion of the world’s investment capital, a large portion of the world’s industrial infrastructure, and only 5% of the world’s labor. In terms of supply and demand, there was a huge demand for US labor and a small supply of US labor, thus US laborers enjoyed a standard of living they never had before and never will again. During that time, (the 1950’s), a kid in my home town could drop out of high school, get a job at CAT operating a drill press, get married, buy a house, buy a car, raise a family, then retire at age 50 with a pension and healthcare benefits for the rest of his life. What killed all that was the Marshall Plan and our obsession with winning the Cold War. If US Corporations had been allowed to keep more of their profits, they would have had more money to pour back into their factories, so the demand for US labor would have continued to grow, but The Marshall Plan and Cold War related spending took most of the profits from running factories and industries in the United States and sent those profits overseas to countries like Japan and Germany to help them build their factories, and it also sent the profits into the defense industry so we could defend the entire “Free World” By the early 1970’s you started to see VW bugs, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, and Honda cars on the road. You also started to see Sony consumer products in the home. That would not have been possible so early if the US Government had not taxed US companies at such extremely high rates and sent that money overseas to be invested in foreign factories. By the late 1970’s there was so much foreign competition it took away almost all collective bargaining power of US unions. When CAT workers went on strike in 1978 and 1983, CAT management crushed the unions. Similar things happened in the same time frame in the auto industry. There was already enough labor that could be tapped in foreign countries that it was no longer possible for US workers to demand a huge premium over their foreign counterparts. Now move forward to the end of the Cold War. When the Iron Curtain and the Bamboo Curtain fell, the labor of people in Eastern Europe, the USSR, China, Vietnam, and India became available to anyone who had money to invest. The world’s supply of free-market labor increased by a factor of about 5, while the world’s supply of capital did not increase by much at all. So with much more labor and only a little bit more demand for that labor, the price of industrial labor...

BD66 comments on Sep 18, 2020:
Another very simple example to explain how completely insane the 2nd point is. Assume you have two companies. Company A and Company B. Both companies make $1,000,000 per year in profits. Company A is taxed at 90%, so at the end of each year, after paying taxes, Company A has $100,000 to reinvest back into growing the business. The takes the taxes from company A and 50% goes to defense, then 40% goes to Company B. So at the end of each year, after paying taxes, the money each company has to reinvest back into its business is: Company A: $1,000,000 (- 90% taxes) = $100,000 Company B: $1,000,000 (+40% subsidy) = $1,400,000 If Company B has competent management, it will grow much faster than Company A because Company B has 14 times more money to reinvest back into growing the business each year. Now assume all Company A's are in the United States, and all Company B's are in Japan and West Germany. I have described exactly what happened in the 1950's when US companies were taxed at 90% and Japanese and West German companies were heavily subsidized. That's why we started to see so many Toyota, Honda, VW, Mercedes, and BMW cars in the road by the early 1970's.

That Democrats engage in the same thing: Bill Clinton -> Hillary Clinton. Happy Labor Day!
BD66 comments on Sep 8, 2020:
Prior to WWII, there were labor unions, but laborers were desperately poor. During WWII, almost all the other developed countries in the world bombed out each other's industrial infrastructure and bankrupted themselves. The United States was the only country in the world that survived the war with an industrial infrastructure in tact. From 1945 to 1980, unskilled laborers in the USA enjoyed a standard of living that they never had before, and never will again. The people to thank for that are the people who started WWII. Hitler, Stalin, and Tojo. Not labor unions. Give credit where credit is due.

Bill Nye Says ‘We’re All One Species’ As He Simplifies Race In Viral Video | ETCanada.com
BD66 comments on Jul 23, 2020:
A very simplistic view of a complex topic. It all comes down to evolution, an how long have reproducing populations been apart. Humans split from chimpanzees 5 to 7 million years ago. Since then, there were enough genetic mutations that Humans and chimpanzees could not have sex and produce offspring. Humans split from Neandertals 300K to 500K years ago. Mondern humans and Neandertals were close enough genetically that they could reproduce with each other and produce offspring, so Europeans and Asians get about 2% to 4% of their DNA from Neandertals. The limit for most species that they be sufficiently different that they cannot reproduce is about 1 to 2 million years. Modern humans migrated out of Africa about 50K to 60K years ago, so there was very little interbreeding between modern humans in Europe and Asia with modern humans in Africa for about 50K to 60K years. The modern humans who became Europeans and the modern humans who became Asians split about 40K years ago. So for about 40K years: Modern humans who became Europeans did not breed with Asians or Africans Modern humans who became Asians did not breed with Europeans or Africans Modern humans who became Africans did not breed with Europeans or Asians. This 40K years of evolving separately led to physical differences, skin color, hair texture, facial features, that was very different among the three different groups (or races) of people. Then all of that changed due to people like Vasco De Gama, Christopher Columbus, and Ferdinand Magellan. Once modern humans started traveling in large numbers from continent to continent, they started interbreeding with each other, so the physical (racial) differences that were so apparent in the 1400's are diminishing rapidly.
