This is a wonderful idea, but not likely to get much traction. Lives are still being lost in foreign countries due to this attack, including first responders who had to fight for compensation for ills suffered from working on the wreckage. Fear is what drives politics, especially on the Right, it sells air time and newspapers. It allows scam artists to try and guilt people into making donations to fake charities. And it completely overlooks the fact that the death of 3,000 Americans in this attack caused the death of millions of Iraqis who had nothing at all to do with it. But history and memory are often only loosely based on facts.
If you had to kill your own meat would you?
Barnie2years comments on Sep 10, 2019:
I have hunted and fished. I made a point of eating or trying to eat whatever animal or fish I took. First, I was not really good at either, so no creatures went extinct while I was hunting/gathering. Second, cleaning the catch was not fun, but fortunately I never killed a large animal like a dear or bear. Third, I could never be a farmer and raise animals to be slaughtered, but then I could never be a boxer or a surgeon either. Cutting live flesh is not something I would do willingly. Fourth, my rationalizing for eating meat is that putting that meat on the table is employment and income for thousands of people. Farm kids are lovingly raising animals for slaughter because it is the life they were brought up in. And millions of animals would never be born at all if it wasn’t for the food industry. I realize the corporate farming and slaughtering is not pleasant, I have been inside chicken processing plants. But then vegetable farming on the corporate scale often mistreats humans in the process of growing those vegetables. But there would be no other way to feed our exploding population with mom and pop farms. They are a luxury few can afford, and I want to grow my own vegetables about as much as I want to hunt my own meat! 😊

Decade in the Red: Trump Tax Figures Show Over $1 Billion in Business Losses
Barnie2years comments on Sep 9, 2019:
He is a fraud in every sense of the word. Most of the money he lost was other people’s money, banks etc., not his own. But because much of the tax law is written to protect the most wealthy, his paper losses of others money is deductible off kids personal taxes and others (contractors, partners, investors) are left dealing with the losses he caused. I remember when he was in big trouble, close to filing for bankruptcy and the holders of his debt were falling all over themselves to lend him more money because his bankruptcy would have cost them more than the possibility he could somehow become solvent and stay in business. It’s a sad world we live in.

Barnie2years comments on Sep 6, 2019:
At friends of my parents house, about 9 or 10 years old. They had two daughters, one my age and one my sister's. The daughter my age was very cute, her name was Babbet. While the parents talked after dinner, we kids decided to play hide and seek in their apartement. When it was our turn to hide, Babbet took me into their parents darkened bedroom and on the bed gave me my first real kiss! My brain didn't work right for a week! Brexit Deal
Barnie2years comments on Sep 3, 2019:
Britain never went all in with the EU anyway, they kept their monetary system rather than switch to the Euro. If I have it right, a lot of this Brexit issue came down to the EU requiring it's members to accept certain numbers of refuge immigrants and they did not want to be forced to do that. Northern Ireland is still using the Pound currency as well, while Ireland itself uses the Euro, meaning if you go there for a tour, you need to have some cash in both currencies (a pain!). Scotland was against the breakup with the EU as well. It could have ramifications for trade between the Brits and EU members and with many EU people working and living in Britain as well as the other way around, it makes it difficult for them to know what their status is going to be I'm sure some of our British members on here can point out any errors on my part or be more enlightening. I look forward to learning more from them.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 26, 2019:
Religion and philosophy, two peas in a pod. Both are ways humans waste time and energy attempting to divine meaning out of that which is meaningless. How did I get here, where am I going, what comes next? Pretty simple really My parents had unprotected sex, one of the millions of sperms found a viable egg, which implanted itself in mom’s uterus and developed into me. It’s a process which repeats itself millions of times in one form or another every day, in every living creature. Once born, if we make it that far (since many fertilized eggs don’t), we live life in the constraints of the society we were born into in some fashion. At some point, after the egg is fertilized and the being created, regardless of species, it dies, ceases to exist as a being, and life goes on without it. Anything else is built on the fantasy of mankind, whose brain evolved to the point where it needed to formulate some surreal reason to explain the complexity of existence. Unlike all other animals that, as far as I know, just live their lives without the need to exhaust themselves trying to figure out why. Does anyone wonder if a rat born in a sewer wonders why they were put in that environment rather than on a nice farm instead? Does a parrot born in captivity wish it was living in a jungle free? We humans spend much of our lives concerned with our places in life compared to others or imagining what we might have after our body is done its time, rather than enjoying what we already have right now.

Are childless people more likely to be religious?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 24, 2019:
I would say the other way around. Many people with children feel incapable of teaching their kids how to interact, or feeling a great need for outside support turn to religion. Especially if they themselves grew up in that setting. Or they feel the need at some point to give the church the job of teaching morality which perhaps they themselves don’t feel qualified to do. Or perhaps the kids are coming home from public school with behavior the parent finds distasteful, so they hope a church environment will help undo that. In my son’s case, it was a marital issue that drove him to use the church to help get his family back. With no kids, it’s much easier to find other solutions or feel there is less to lose I think.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 20, 2019:
If the person being baptized is important to you, go and celebrate the joy of the parents. If not, just an acquaintance, I wouldn't bother. My son turned to religion when he was married because it was important to his wife, and became almost more so when they were separated due to his infidelity. So when his sons, my grandsons were baptized, I went to the service and sat quietly and shared their moment with them. They know I am an Atheist and I am sure would not have been angry if I had not showed up. But that is not how I do things, just as I would show up at a wedding or a funeral of someone important to me, but not as a participant. When my father died, I was in charge of the arrangements and had to give eulogies (he had requested three receptions for the people in various cities we had lived in). The first was at the church my mother attended in Florida. My eulogy was a celebration of his life and strength, no mention of god or heaven. The other services were in a community hall and an Amvet's. Dad was, though he never said it, most likely an Agnostic. So I don't regret any of the time spent in that church any more than I do the other locations and it was important for my mother. If you have your own feelings straight as to what you do or do not believe, there should be no fear of those who's beliefs you don't share. Just go with the flow, stand up, sit down when required and smile a lot with the knowledge that those couple of drops of water or even dunking will not define the future beliefs of the person being baptized. You will be their voice of reason as they grow.

Officer-Involved Killings Now a Leading Cause of Death For Young Men in America
Barnie2years comments on Aug 10, 2019:
Have you watched the bod cam and other videos? Back in the day, 70 and 80’s, cops carried 38’s or 357 magnums as their duty weapons. Even way back, during prohibition, when gangsters were toting semi automatics and Tommy guns, the beat cops were carrying 6 round or less revolvers. Then a decision was made, due to drug dealers arming with large capacity Uzi’s and MAC’s that the beat cops needed more fire power, even though the vast majority never or rarely take them out of the holster, let alone get involved in a gun battle. Here is the point of the history. When a beat cop had only 6 rounds before he needed to reload, he made sure he aimed and tried to make every shot count. In a situation where he was not sure if the suspect was armed, but felt threatened, he would shoot once or twice and either take person down or the guy would get away. Compare that with the beat cop today, armed with a 9mm semi-automatic with a 15 to 17 round magazine, plus 2 or more quick to change mags on the belt. If the cop feels threatened, he draws his weapon and within seconds can fire those 15 rounds into the suspect. And once you start pulling the trigger, it’s hard to stop. Chance of survival if if half of them hit? Really low. This may not be the only reason for death by cop, but it is a factor. When you read about some of those killed where the cops fired 50 rounds within seconds at an unarmed suspect, or even one armed, the results are pretty much as expected: fatal.

This will just drive them underground and make them feel more enraged. They are literally a ticking time bomb and we are just seeing the beginning of the explosion. Remember Oklahoma City? That was the last time the so called Nationalists had any power. Now, thanks to the Internet, they are bigger, more spread out and more dangerous. Weapons they have now were not even readily available back then.

Not only should they be prosecuted, but they should lose any government subsidies they receive. Republicans only hate immigrants that aren’t making them money by working for slave wages. There are decent conservatives, but they are being drowned out by their racist, mentally unstable, Far Right fanatics. They allowed the Tea Party and radical Religion Dominionists to take over their party. But they fear Liberals far more than they fear their fringe element, so I doubt many will work to bring their party back to centrist out of fear of losing elections. A tactic that the Democrats need to learn if we want to win elections; unity behind the candidates we run for office.

Every great civilization has fallen to the scrap heap of time. I have a video series put out by Time/Life year’s ago (yes, they are video tapes) that shows the rise and fall of human civilization in various areas of the world over the span of human existence. From the Babylonians to the Romans, the Incas to Greeks and others. All were advanced civilizations for their times. All of them fell to ruin, some for observable reasons (natural disasters), some to war, and some for unknown circumstances. Our country has been fortunate to have survived several near calamities (wars, civil strife, financial collapse), but the storm clouds are once again brewing, divisions are like earthquakes, splitting to the point where facts and truth are subjective. Will we recover once again? Will another civilization rise up from the mass of humanity to take over our vaunted position in the world? China and Russia are certainly watching for our weakness, if not actively helping to stir it. Time will tell. Contrary to Christian lore, the future is not in their book of legends. It is a evolving and ever changing mix of nature, humanity and the unpredictability of their combination. Live each day to the best of your ability, fight for right when you see wrong, but most importantly, enjoy every moment you can, life is a finite thing and there are no redo’s.
