I can certainly sympathise with your feelings of betrayal towards those who abused you. But it does not necessarily reflect the question of consensual incest, especially between older siblings and not involving procreation. In many states, marriage between first cousins is legal, though overall many feel that is incestuous. And I have known older siblings of opposite genders who lived together for all intent and purpose as married, though whether they were sexually involved is unknown. And they seemed quite happy. My guess is there are at least as many incestual relationships among “good christians’ as there are among non believers.

There are many instances of well off, maybe even privileged children becoming monsters, serial killers and even presidents (LOL). The kids involved in the Columbine massacre were average middle class kids from decent families, yet they became vicious killers. There is no black and white when it comes to development of personality and change is possible no matter what the early circumstances.

I went to a chiropractor, didn't help, had a CAT scan done, results came back, my lower back was a mess (I had already had two discectomies, so there is not a whole lot of cushion between vertebrae). I couldn't sleep, sit, walk, pretty much anything for very long periods of time. One night I went with a friend dancing (loved to dance) and I decided that I was going to dance, regardless of how much it screwed me up. The back was much better the next day. After another night of dancing and my chiropractor telling me if it helped, keep going, I have been pain free since. So with back issues, you never know what my put things back in order. If the chiropractor helped you (and I know others who have had similar results), then it is good medicine. They sometimes make promises they don't keep, but then so do medical doctors. And of course, there are bad as well as good ones.

I fear having a stroke, but I don't spend time worrying about it. Worry is trying to figure out what could go wrong before you know the facts, then coming up with solutions for a problem that may not even exist. I had a coworker would make herself sick and lose a night's sleep worrying about a forecast of snow the next day (we were bus drivers) and then wake up to no snow or just a fury. Wasted a night of sleep for nothing. Bing concerned, she would have woke up a little early to clean off her car and got a good night sleep.

Given that and mammal mating instincts, the strong and the aggressive would have the advantage of mates and dominance over the lesser males for eons. As humans formed groups, either families or klans or villages, the aggressive males were often out hunting or warring, giving those less aggressive males opportunities to reproduce as well as make themselves useful in other ways. As human populations grew, these divergent personalities had to depend on each other in cooperative ways, creating cultures. While the aggressive male is still dominant, the culture has to a certain extent required him to be less so in order to maintain order. In societies where the dominant males still have the most control, you have situation like those found in the Middle East and much of Africa, where war and tribal fighting are ways of life. It’s late and I am not sure how much this is on topic or comprehensible, but I will throw it out there.

Pro sports figures risk life and limb to be the best, to increase their worth, those who are not as dedicated of talented get paid much less. @SassyLady, as I pointed out, I read your article in Mic. It is not without people who don’t agree. And like I said, the women are no more a commodity than anyone else who competes for your money. Pro sports figures risk life and limb to be the best, to increase their worth, those who are not as dedicated of talented get paid much less. If you are smart and motivated, you move up in a company and get paid accordingly. If you chose to be satisfied just doing your job, your pay will be less. This has nothing to do with women or men, it has to do with getting paid what you are worth for whatever you do. And maybe you can explain to me what these women who chose to work in the sex industry would do? At least if it is legal and regulated they have the possibility of some protection from exploitation. Nothing is perfect and there will be bad bosses in legal brothels just as there are in sewing factories. And there will be illegal prostitutes just as there is illegal drug dealers even where it is legal. But it makes it easier for the majority of people who wish to stay legal to be better taken care of.

While they have achieved some success, the total Swedish socio-economic model, as well as Norway and Denmark, is so different than the US, and even much of Europe, that a comparison of the way it might work outside that kind of environment would be difficult at best. Something to keep in mind: no matter whether it is legal, illegal or they arrest the sex worker or the client, there will always be women willing to sell the use of their bodies and men willing to pay for it. The difference, just like drugs, or alcohol during prohibition, when it’s illegal it opens itself to the worst elements and even worse abuse. Legal isn’t perfect, but with proper support and enforcement, it’s better than nothing.

My ex wife goes to work every day in a factory. She hates her work, doesn’t like the people she works with or for. Talks constantly about quitting an how much she wants to do something else. But the money is good, The work is sought after and the company is a large and dependable. Does that make her a prostitute? Or more to the point, should working in a factory be illegal because people work there even though they are not happy about it?

I just read an article about how an increasing number of atheist men are gravitating toward anti-feminist and white supremacist spaces. I would think, however, that atheists would be more likely to be progressive. Socially progressive, at least. None of that biblical morality messing things up.

Depending on where the child is getting thumped on the head by the bible and how much pressure they are putting on her to feel bad for you, she is already in a quandary. @Donotbelieve I have always been at best Agnostic, until I answered some of my own questions on life and came down on the Atheist side. My son was only exposed to religion when he was with his grandparents (mostly grandmothers) and occasionally his mom, though she was never really committed to it. But he became interested enough in it to get baptised, but never really went all in until he met his wife who was much more into religion then him. They had a cheating issue after their second son was born (interestingly enough, he met the gal at a church function he was attending) that threatened to tear the family apart. The only way she would take him back was a total commitment of the church and hours of counseling. They got back together and seem to be doing very well almost six years in. So who am I to rain on what works for them. They don't push their religion on me in person and I don't mock their beliefs in person. On Facebook, I am quite open about my feelings toward religion, they are open about theirs. But when we are together, there is peace. And it's much better since we don't start every meal with my grandsons waving their hands in the air yelling "Thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus!" That was apparently just a phase. LOL! Anyway, to sum it up, your daughter will find her own way and as her mother you will hopefully always love each other, regardless of bumps along the road.

I like that and have often said that the only form of immortality we have is the DNA we leave behind in our children. But since the death of my father a few years ago, I have expanded that thought. For those with no children, for whatever reason, who might feel left out of the continuation spectrum; your spirit continues on in the people whom you interacted with in your lifetime. My father was a business man. He left behind not only my sister and myself, but hundreds of people who’s lives he influenced over his 90 years of life. By giving them employment, by mentoring, by befriending them, he had influence on both their lives and the lives of people around them. I am sure your grandma in her lifetime also had influence on lives of people around her beyond her family. I celebrate and honor my Dad’s life, not mourn his death. He lived a good life, in my mind, that’s all we can ask for.

I was married two more times myself. After some time to let the bitterness lose its bite, I became friends with both. My second wife and I had a son and we were married 22 years, We decided to bury the hatchet when our son's wife became pregnant with our first grandchild and remained friends until she died of cancer about a year ago. My third wife was from Slovakia (not a bought bride! ?) and had a one year old son that I fell in love with as much as I did with her. I knew we had issues, but thought we could work them out to keep the boy growing up here in the US. It didn't work, but we stuck it out long enough for them to get their permanent Green Cards. She left me and we didn't communicate much for about five years, until she mentioned in an email that the guy she left me for was ignoring her son. So, I said I would be glad to help out with him in anyway I could. I was really the only father he had known, we were together the first 5 years of his life. She eventually got rid of the boyfriend and we spend time together (with no sexual benefits) since neither of us have anyone else in our lives. And it's looking like that will be the story for the rest of my life, since I can't seem to even get a date for dinner nowadays.

I lived in their area, and I know that things are not always as happy as they may appear. But community support, as long as you stay faithful, is always there. Stray and you get shunned, and lose all your community contact. Great way to keep them in the fold.

I had to chuckle when I read “everyone worships something!” That is kind of what my Dad told me one time we were having a discussion on belief. He was, I honestly think, at least an Agnostic, though he would never admit to it. Mom was the believer in the family, and he went along to keep her happy. The nice thing was, if he didn’t go to church on Sunday, my sister and I could usually beg off as well. And he didn’t go fairly regularly. But he told me one time that you have to believe in something, be it god or a person or yourself. And I really never quite accepted that premise. About the only thing I believe is that if I wake up in the morning I’m alive, some day I will die, and life will go on without me.

The fact that some biblical stories intersect with regional historical events does nothing to prove the bible is a truthful document anymore than the average novel peppered with actual historic references is made to be believed. The fact is that the bible the faithful worship today has been translated, edited, rewritten, revised thousands of times, and was originally put together to benefit a Roman emperor and consolidate his power. To make this book the center of your life makes as much sense as worshipping Dr. Seuss, or Aesop’s fables, both of which contain better life philosophies. And a book that can encompass every denomination from a Catholic, Ortodox or other, to Amish, to snake handling Pentecostals, has no real message, just interpretations controlled by human con men and women.
