Ha! God gives them the diseases and science and doctor help them live! Never heard a religious person follow that line of thought! I have also suggested to people who go on about how intensive medical treatment that is successful is a miracle from god; where the hell was their god 20, 30 or 50 years ago when even what is now routine medical care was primitive and usually deadly. Your first take on their god being an abusive lover is right on! Beat you down so you worship him in the hopes the next beating won’t be so bad if it comes despite your best effort. Reminds me of a family member going through a series of issues with her family saying “why me?” I told her why not? Everyone goes through bad times, rough days, times when life just seems to be working against us. We non believers just have to get up in the morning a muddle on, knowing that like those who pray to the imaginary friend, life will have ups to go with the downs if we seek them out!

It’s really no different than wanting to date thin women or full bodied women, short or tall women. Most people have a phisical preference they gravitate to, even if it isn’t put in stone. Go for what makes you feel comfortable and what you want. I did note that you mentioned several times having a mental illness. I hope it is not related to the assaults and regardless of why, that you are getting help with it. There is non religious support groups and therapists out there, seek them out.

Since holidays like Christmas and Easter are based on Pagan festivals anyway, just focus on the giving aspect and the tree and bunny. Though I must say, I hate Christmas, not because it is a religious holiday, but has become a greed and corporate boondoggle rather than a time to be sharing and caring. I like Thanksgiving as a time to spend with family and we can always be thankful for what we have without giving credit to invisible spirits.

Men/Women, Is sex a requirement for an enjoyable romantic relationship?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 9, 2018:
I love your description of the husband in the photo!! ? But in answer to your question: a sexless marriage, or even relationship, would not work for me. The intimacy and bonding of sex is in my book as close as two people can get. I can like you from a distance, but when I love you, I want to be part of you. When I say sex, I am not talking about the act of physical intercourse alone, but the sensuality of bodily contact, skin against skin, extended foreplay, tasting, kissing.... OK, gotta stop now, these are all things I have not had in my life for way too long! ?
Relationship
Barnie2years comments on Jul 9, 2018:
I think what would cause major issues in this type of relationship is outside forces. Assuming that the couple could be so in love as to be able to respect their opposing views on a fundamental, life defining belief, in most cases there would be family to deal with. II, as an Atheist, have developed an understanding with my family, if they are believers, that has allowed them to accept me as I am. Will I be able to convince my partner’s family that I am not “leading their daughter into hell!” If she has a good relashionship with her family, based on their religious beliefs, and I am unwilling to participate in some way in their ceremonies and holidays without feeling like I am going to vomit because of the stupidity of the sermons and activities required, will it not cause her to feel the need to choose sides? Will there not be constant attempts to bring me into the fold by her family members, even if she is able to not do it herself? I have been in relationships with Christians, but they were not devout and loved sleeping in Sunday’s as much as me! ? And at the time I was a little more malleable about going to church for special occasions than I am now. I still show up at those few funerals and weddings I get invited to, but find a need to grit my teeth the whole time I am there. How would that work if my partner was a devout Sunday church attender?

I am also thrilled to find so many people from other countries have found their way to these forums. I have a dear friend who is in a really bad situation relationship wise. She is from China and hooked up with a friend of mine on an internet dating site. She is a really fun, active person. She came over here with her teen daughter and married, and for the first couple of years, they had a great time, even though the daughter had emotional issues. She did great in school (very bright) but was not happy with her new step father and life in general, to the point of needing professional help. Then after a couple of years of happiness, he had a serious stroke on a highway miles from medical care. The result is paralysis on his entire right side, and the general mental capacity of a mean three year old! She could have easily ran, she is quite capable of taking care of herself, but she chose to dedicate herself to taking care of him (I might mention that there is a 20 year age difference between them). Anyway, to relate this to the topic, she found a Chinese church here in Lancaster which she started attending I think just for the social aspect of being with people she could communicate in her own language, but found that the idea of an invisible friend and a better afterlife gave her comfort and helped her cope with the daily grind of dealing with her home situation. We kind of stopped talking for a few years because, obviously I am somewhat irreverent, and topics we used to talk about are now off limits. But she contacted me recently for some help and we are talking again. We started a discussion on spirits, since in February I had a heart failure and was technically dead for ten seconds. She told me that she had become a Christian because at some point in her indoctrination she had seen the “spirit” of Jesus, and she believed that all our spirits survive death. We had a very civil conversation, though I pointed out that people can be made to believe they see all kinds of things and wondered where all these spirits are living? But by the same token, given the way she is living, the delusion of rewards in an afterlife for doing the right thing in this one would certainly make it easier to not go completely out of your mind.

I started to watch the movie and had to turn it off. I don’t do that with many movies, but the basis of the movie just seemed too realistic, given today’s political climate. It exemplifies the ease with which organized religion and money are able to overcome any sense of morality to preserve their status quo. Enslaving anyone is evil, enslaving women to use as breeding machines for the upper class is just disturbing.

Fellow agnostics, how do you feel about believers joining?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 3, 2018:
Anyone can get on the site. The point system limits what they can do as newbies. And if the turn into trolls or start evangelizing, they can be ejected. If they simply are questioning why we don’t feel the need for faith to live normal, moral and even fulfilling lives, maybe we can sow a seed of questioning into their minds. And certain Agnostics, because they are simply searching for answers, may tend to push you for explanations of why you don’t feel as they do. It should not be an argument, but rather an open forum to ideaology.

Would you have a wedding with religious aspects incorporated in it?
Barnie2years comments on Jun 29, 2018:
Been there, done that! I put it under the same category as funerals. Given my track record on marriage, the two are pretty much the same to me at this point ?. The key is, if I am getting married to a believer, and I have any expectation of it working out, not only her needs, but those of her family, need to be respected. That said, I would assume that we had already discussed the fact that I would not be showing up at church on Sundays. She would also know that all the scripture reading would have no real meaning to me. Though it is not an issue at this point (I’m 66), the subject of child baptism would have to be ironed out. Again, I am fine with that, since having water sprinkled on you is not going to matter one way or the other to me if you die. And the religious habits of the kids would be a much bigger issue than where we said our vows. So, given all the obstacles in an Atheist/believer marriage, where the ceremony takes place should be a minor one.

I have had an interesting life, travelled a lot growing up, had love (even if fleeting), have passed on my DNA to a son and grandchildren, my wisdom (for what it is worth) to a stepson. I feel I have helped more people than I have harmed in my life. So, when it’s time for me to exit, I have no regrets, nothing more I expect to accomplish. A recent heart failure only reminded me to enjoy as much as possible whatever positives I have in my life.

It's like giving up anything else you become dependant on, especially if you have an addiction problem. It is why so many of the drug and alcohol rehabilitation organizations are religiously oriented. They take you off the drugs and get you addicted to the idea of a greater force. Addicts can become the greatest believers, because once they latch on to something, they get obsessed. The religious like to point at porn addiction, computer game addiction, sex addiction, but they would never point out that religious fundamentalists, evangelicals and radical Islamists are nothing more than religious addicts, being often controlled by whatever leaders they have attached themselves to. Which is what in many ways make them dangerous. They lose the ability to think for themselves. The problem is never going to go away and free thinkers and people who can avoid addiction will always be a minority. And we tend to reproduce much slower than the believers!
Why are you athiest?
Barnie2years comments on Jun 23, 2018:
Because there is nothing in religion that makes even a little sense from a logical standpoint. Prayer is nothing more than wishing, miracles are nothing that can not be called an anomaly. If you can explain to me where heaven and hell are in the known universe, show me a soul leaving a body, maybe we could talk. And every religion has been used for nefarious purposes, for wars, to control the poor and for the benefit of the rich. I lived in Europe growing up, where religion doesn't have the stranglehold it does here in the US. I toured cathedrals where the displays of gold and jewels were dazzling, but questioned why this wealth was not used to feed the poor and heal the sick, rather than decor for ornate ceremony that did nothing to actually help anyone, other than give the bishops and pope luxury lifestyles. And those are just some of the reasons I am an Atheist. If there is one downside to being Atheist or a non-believer, it is the lack of community and networking. Atheist have no meeting places, social clubs or organized activities, especially if you are outside a larger metropolitan area. Where you live, you surely feel very alone, especially as a widow, without a support group. I am not too far away, but I know it is difficult to meet new people if you don't hang out at bars or belong to some kind of club. Separating children from their parents is obviously not a new thing either, as long as they are "the other people." Barnie2years comments on Jun 16, 2018:
I have this issue every time there is a tragedy and the news crews find some simpleton to interview who says god spared them, their home, their family, their pets, while not acknowledging that by saying that, their god then becomes responsible for the destruction, death, injury and mayhem that has happened to their friends and neighbors? You can’t have one without the other, sorry! When that tornado goes through that little town, where almost everyone goes to the same church, worships the same god, and that pencil line of destruction missed your home... If I was one of the homeowners that lost everything, I might be tempted to strangle you when I hear you say god spared you but aimed for me! ?

For atheists - what makes you believe no deity exists?
Barnie2years comments on Jun 15, 2018:
Because nothing attributed to a god can not be attributed to chance, circumstance, or reason. So called miracles are not duplicatable, which would not be the case were there a puppet master who supposedly was creating them. I tell people who get in my face, flip a coin or pray, the result will be just as dependable. ?

So sad when you invent a god that you use for your own convenience without taking in all the ramifications of what you say you believe. If you truly believe this crap, that your god is all powerful, then you have to hold it responsible for every tortured child, every pedophile, every disease that those children will suffer (we won't even talk about the adults). You are worshiping the most evil bastard to never exist. Thanks, I'll pass myself. Mankind is by it's nature no prize, giving birth to a child who will become a burden not just on your the life of the mother, but others, just for the sake of some other person's belief is not at all what being a human is about. Animals give birth because they have no means of controlling it, and when they overpopulate, disease and natural selection take over the task of thinning the population (though hunting, killing gods creatures, is quite permissible for most christians, even the pacifists). Take your religion out of my laws!

Are you cheating if you are open to your partner about your other relationship(s)?
Barnie2years comments on Jun 1, 2018:
By definition, I would think that if you are in an agreed upon open relationship, the word cheating does not apply. If you are cheating, then you are withholding information from your partner and hiding your affair as much as possible. It’s kind of like going into a store and they have a rack of merchandise marked “Free” and the next shelf has priced items. If you take a free item it is not shoplifting. If you take the priced item, you are. Best example I could come up with quickly! ?

Barnie2years comments on May 31, 2018:
I seriously doubt age is the issue. Listing yourself as "anonymous" might, not having a picture surely will limit response and profile bio and information can discourage response. But age would hardly matter from what I have read on other posts concerning age.
Would you consider having sex with a bearded man?
Barnie2years comments on May 30, 2018:
I get tired of shaving sometimes and grow one. I keep it trimmed, I can’t deal with hair getting in my mouth or food. Then, at some point I nick some off with the trimmer, and start yo get into various configurations, depending on mood: from goatee to fumanchu. At some stage, I get tired of trimming and start shaving again. I have found overall women accept it as well as men accept their women making drastic changes to their hair style, going long to short, or short to shorter. They get used to it either way for the most part.
Do you remember your dreams? Do you think that trying to understand what your dreams are trying to ...
Barnie2years comments on May 29, 2018:
One more little thought on the subject. Dogs and cats seem to have dreams. Anyone with a pet can tell you that they frequently are moving their paws and making sounds as they dream. Also, little kids have dreams and nightmares, long before they have a whole lot of things to remember. My stepson had night terrors, where in the middle of the night he would be screaming and thrashing, yelling random words out. They would last for maybe 10 minutes or so, then he would calmly go back to sleep. He was about three at the time, if I recall, and I read up that it is fairly common around that age group and they outgrow it after a year or two, which he did. So the idea that dreams have some hidden meaning is hard to imagine given that they can happen to all creature and all ages, with no possible interpretational basis.

Barnie2years comments on May 29, 2018:
I used to seldom have dreams, that I was aware of at least, and generally only had a vague memory of those that I did remember. However, one of the medications I got put on after my heart issue has changed all that, and I now dream every night, all night long, sometimes they seem to start before I am even asleep! And while they are not nightmare, they always involve a lot of activity or frustration, running around, crazy stunts, or on rare occasions, sex. So I wake up in the morning, I am exhausted, more tired than when I went to bed. Waking for a bathroom stop doesn't even help, since I go right back into the dream where I left off as soon as my head hits the pillow! I have changed one medication that the doctor thought might be causing the issue, but it didn't have any effect on it, I would love to go back to my nice quiet blank sleep nights! Too tired to try and figure out hidden meanings for the dreams!

If they are important people to you, say thank you, and accept that they can’t function in their life without their pretend invisible friend. If they are of no importance to you, tell them god never did one single paper of your homework, never babysat your kids when you had a class, never paid for one of your classes. You are responsible for everything that happens in your life, good or bad. If they have such low self esteem as to believe some magic force provides for them, feel sad for them. Unlike you, they can never fully appreciate their own strength and accomplishments.

I find religious people funny rather than pathetic. A few month back I had V-fib, was basically dead for 10 seconds until my car crashed and the jolt put me back into rythme. A very religious friend of mine, who knows I am Atheist, told me that god saved my life so that I could accept him. After I stopped laughing I told her she just gave me a good reason not to believe, since by her logic, if I was a believer I would have stayed dead!! ? That made her stutter and back pedal pretty quick.

U.S. top court backs companies over worker class-action claims
Barnie2years comments on May 21, 2018:
The working people are already at a disadvantage with the current court tilted to the Right. If Trump gets to appoint any more justices, it will take decades before we even have a chance to push the court to a humanitarian majority. With Kennedy looking like he may retire, sadly the probability of a super majority of conservatives on the court is almost inevitable. I dread the consequences!

Crows are a very smart birds. Them and Ravens can lean speech, they are very social and quite hard to sneak up on. They communicate with their caws and cackles. I have seen cars that were parked under the roosting trees become totally covered in crow poop to the point you could not tell what color it was originally!

Primaries are generally not a good forecast of the general election, especially in areas where there is not too many people running in one or the other party. I know on my ballot here in PA, for my district, there was pretty much no choice, unless you wanted to write in someone, since only one Democrat was running for each office (our incumbent governor, senator, etc.), except the lieutenant governor. Thant was the only one that had an actual choice. We can only hope that by November will have screwed things up so badly that the Republicans will stay home out of disgust and the Democrats register and show up at the polls!

Barnie2years comments on May 20, 2018:
Very optimistic and sounds like a Beatles song. But not in the reality of human interaction. In point of fact, one could say the latest Texas shooter went on the killing spree because his love was not reciprocated. Love is often used as a tool, if unreciprocated, an excuse to harm. People love their religion, their kin and clan, their country, their leaders. Not all of these are healthy love, but love non the less. And reality is that we all know how loving the church is to those not in the fold, gays, Atheists, other religions and other beliefs. So while it sounds lovely, it is not within the realm of possibility.

Barnie2years comments on May 20, 2018:
No drama to me would mean they don't want a person in the middle of a contentious divorce. Or with major family issues, either children, parents, or siblings. Or it could mean drug or alcohol issues. In other words, in the middle of the plots of your average soap opera. Dram as entertainment is far more interesting than drama in real life.
What was the most harrowing experience that you have ever had?
Barnie2years comments on May 18, 2018:
There has been a few. Getting caught in a whirlpool at a New Jersey beach, having my face slammed into the bottom sand, in about 5 foot of water, as I had been swimming along. Was only about 5 or 6, and I didn’t think I could get out of it, but once I hit bottom it let up. Another was crossing an ice covered quarry with a friend. He was ahead of me and had gotten to the bank and around to the path out. I was still about five foot out, when the ice started to crack, and suddenly I was in the cold water of a deep quarry, struggling to find the edge. I was dressed for winter, with heavy clothes. I would come up for air, see my friend on the path, curse him out for not coming to help me, go back under, kicking, trying to find the edge. I came up for the third time, and was running out of steam! Sank again and suddenly I felt solid ground. I clawed my way up the steep bank and around to the path, I gave my friend hell for not coming to help me (he really couldn’t have done much without risking sliding in himself). Then we had to try and figure out how to get me dried off before we went back to his house, since we were not supposed to be in the quarry. After we found we couldn’t get the snow covered wood to light up to start a fire, we rode our bikes to his house. Then, as luck would have it, no one was home anyway. We tossed my clothes in the dryer and never told anyone, until many years later.
