Learning everyday is what life is all about! It sounds like you allowed her to vent and that in itself is often helpful to people who live through the trauma she obviously has. And often just listening is all they really want, since you certainly can't go back and change anything about her life experience. Sadly, her experience seems like it is not unique, especially for women, though many boys grow up in toxic environments as well. Those who like her manage to overcome and live productive lives are to often the minority, but are certainly to be admired and heard.
Enjoy your rest and keep up the good work you and your fellow medics are doing on the front line of the pandemic.

Money talks, poor people walk. There have been very few times in human evolution where there was anything even close to wealth sharing. The closest I can think of was in the aftermath of WW II, when the wealthy were paying close to 90% tax and manpower shortages and the devastation of much of the world caused wages to provide a high standard of living for the working class here in the USA.
But it didn’t last, because greed is a driving factor in the human psyche and those who have the most always want more. And as they accumulate wealth, they accumulate power to control their governments, until you have a jackass wealthy con man gets elected president (or in your case, prime minister) and at some point those at the bottom rise up and all hell breaks loose. And when the dust settles, another group of thieves takes over without people even noticing (just look at the French Revolution).

I told them then, and I would repeat it now (we don’t talk very often! 😄) I will stay and be part of the resistance to bring democracy back. Because under a second Trump term, we will be a democracy in the same sense that Russia and China are democracies. Only a strong and vocal resistance, with help from a strong military will get it back.

In high school I participated in quiet protests against the Vietnam War and they were calm and we had no problems. We also did door to door signature canvasing. Moving around a lot growing up gave me a wide open view on many subjects. Once I settled down near family and in a conservative area, I found that few of my friends and family shared my thoughts or views. So I always kind of felt like an outsider. I seldom talked about my opinions or religious views for fear of losing the few people I considered friends.
Now, I express myself freely online. Those who disagree can certainly do the same and I will enter into discourse when the other party actually can present factual and verifiable references to their position. And I am quite willing to agree to disagree if we both hold strong positions while still remaining friends.
So, I am glad you have found this outlet as well and hope we here give you a feeling of community lacking in your physical space. Take care 🤗

That is not how religion works. If you have your child baptized you are essentially committing yourself to brainwash your child into following your beliefs which your parents parents had probably done at the time they baptized your parents.
I was lucky, my Mom was a Brethren, who are Anabaptist like te Amish and Mennonites, who don’t baptize children. You must choose baptism into the faith as an adult. My Dad was raised Methodist, but I believe at heart he was an Agnostic, so he differed to her belief and neither me nor my sister were baptized. Mom occasionally now voices regret for that decision since both of us are Atheists and will not be meeting her in heaven 😄.

"Local churches....have banded together to reach out..." I know it seems strange for a religious person, but Atheists and Agnostics don't have "churches" to band together. We don't meet to see what our clothing looks like and talk about all the sinners that didn't get out of bed on Sunday. There are Humanist organizations and this website may be considered about as close as we unchurched people come to a group. If you spend time on here, you will find that we are hardly a cohesive unit. But many non theist volunteer to help, quietly, because many church groups would ban them if they declared their lack of religion openly. And the Humanists do have organized groups and charities that help with disaster relief. So just because you don't see it splashed on the news, doesn't mean there are not non-believers there helping.

Their reactions were very equivalent to how I feel about Trump, even though I cannot understand why they felt that way. My father passed in 2015, which allows me to think that he would have seen through the liar in chief and even if he had voted for Trump (he hated Hillary too), he would have turned against him as time went on.

The human mind is an amazing thing! It is capable of exploring outer space, splitting atoms, creating artificial human organs and so many wonderful things. But it is also prone to murder, con men and women, believing in the preposterous religions and cults created by these con artists.
I have said this on Facebook and maybe here as well. I think it is time to start evolution over again. We are slipping backwards almost as fast as we move forward as a species. An asteroid hit, or a super microbe could wipe us out at any minute. Global temperature change may do it over the long term, but it would be slow and torturous, and the evil ones will stand a better chance of survival. The Earth and the Universe are not stagnant, they go though constant changes over the eons, some much more rapid than others. I would prefer something dramatic and quick over slow and painful.
Watching Trump, his cult followers and his congressional flunky’s, tear away at our democratic system is definitely slow and painful. I hold out hope for November, but I fear the crazies have been left out of the bag and we may not like the results regardless of who wins the election (if it actually takes place). Trump wants to be Putin and other dictators, and by creating enough chaos, he can use their tactics (military and homeland security forces) to declare Marshal Law and start to take over state and local governments, to be replaced by his chosen delegates. It is really a small step, and has already been done on small scale in certain states. I am not sure the Democrats have the support of large portions of the rank and file military, nor the police forces of many cities and states.
I know I deviated from the original topic, but I think they are related. Keep us posted on what they do to this invasion of your island and how things work out.

I was involved with my Union leadership, a small company of about 70 members. It was difficult getting a consensus on our priorities and contracts even with all of us working for the same company! If you watch most elections, at least federal and the Local ones in my area, the winner seldom has more than a 10% majority, rarely that much. And with our two party system, more often than not, everyone is just settling for the candidate least offensive, certainly not one that represents all of your needs or even most.
Parliamentary systems with multiple Parties based on narrower platforms make it perhaps easier to vote for one you can actually feel more representative of your needs. But even they, once elected, have to form unions with other Parties that may not be to your liking, just to get anything done. Which is why governments around the world tend to swing wildly from left to right, sometimes peacefully, sometimes not. The verdict for which way our country changes will come this November, but regardless it will leave about half the people feeling disenfranchised.
