History and architecture go beyond belief. Notre Dame is not just a Catholic cathedral, it is a world known landmark, a film staple for generations. Just as Jews have helped rebuild Mosques, Muslims have helped Jews in Paris during WW II, and came to their aid after the recent shooting in Pittsburgh. They call it religion, we call it Humanism.

That puts you in line with the Afghan Taliban who destroyed centuries old, historical statues because they did not represent their beliefs. I am not sure what your sources are for the torture and slaves. Hunchback of Notre Dame? If that’s the criteria for destruction, every plantation mansion in the South should be bulldozed, along with the White House and Capitol since they were provably built by slave labor.

Barnie2years comments on Apr 15, 2019:
I LOVE โค๏ธbeing retired!! My company had a good defined benefit pension plan (thanks to our Union!) and my Social Security was good as well, so I am financially comfortable (have not had to touch IRAs or stock portfolio yet). I’ve hated peas since I started eating actual food. No one taught me to. I agree with the other people who say we are born with both and which one dominates is both genetic and learned, both by experience (if a dog bites you when you are little, you will probably hate dogs) and through teaching (if you were raised in a racist family with little interaction with other cultures and people, chances are you will he a hateful racist). Same with love, it’s there, just has to be nurtured, especially if it is not the dominant emotion.
What’s your opinion on open carry?
Barnie2years comments on Apr 13, 2019:
Is open carry worse than concealed carry? If the person has a gun on his belt, visible to everyone, you are going to be watching their every move. With concealed carry, you are not going to know they have it, so if they have bad intentions you get less time to react. In Pennsylvania anyone can open carry. To legally carry concealed you need a permit, which is easily obtained as long as you don’t have a felony record. Just remember, if someone has bad intentions, the person carrying open will be the first target, or the person who saves the day. I never open carry, don’t want the attention.

Barnie2years comments on Apr 12, 2019:
Trump is not the disease, he is just the most visible symptom. Republican trolls who constantly post that Obama started the racism are right in a manner of speaking. The election of a black man to the presidency scared the large minority of racists in this country into organizing and getting their hateful messages out to recruit more fearful white supremists into their ranks. And Trump’s announcement of his presidential run which trashed immigrants touched right to the heart of their hatred and let them know they could elect one of their own to the lead the country, even though no one actually thought he could win. But dirty deals, huge money, voter suppression, division in the Democratic Party put this Orange Buffoon into office. If the Democrats can’t coalesce behind one candidate and one primary message, Trump just might get four more years to totally bankrupt the country, not only financially, but morally.
This is so true!

Barnie2years comments on Mar 26, 2019:
A study of the ebb and flow of religiosity would take volumes and still be incomplete due to great gaps in written history and the understanding of the events and societies at various times of cataclysmic changes in spirituality. On more recent histories, the French Revolution, where the God anointed Royals were put to the guillotine by the masses fed up with their religiously prescribed lot comes to mind. In the East, the Russian Orthodoxy is making somewhat of a comeback after decades of suppression under Communism (again, the people’s uprising against the supposedly God appointed Czar and royalty) and current leaderships embrassing of the religion for its own purposes. In the grand scheme of things, religion has always been used as a means to control the masses by those who lead them. The Christian faith and bible were not widespread until the Roman Cesar, I believe Constantine (too lazy to look it up) decided to consolidate various Christian texts into one which would give him the “Godly ordained” power to rule over his Empire. It was such a great rendition of these texts that it has held more or less ever since. Right sadly until this very present time, with Evangelicals belief that Trump was chosen by their God to lead the United States back into its God ordained place in the world.

Militant Agnostics?
Barnie2years comments on Mar 22, 2019:
I used to think of Atheists as Fundamentalists non-believers, ie, radical. So for years I preferred to refer to my non belief as Agnostic. I have since realized that Atheists, like most other personal beliefs, come in astronomical varieties, from the militant to the closeted. So I now proudly assume the Atheists designation and as a sidebar, have become somewhat more critical of the religious stranglehold in this country. Even more so since The Orange Diety assumed office and takes the country down the sewer hole of theocracy.
Atheism is just another religion.
Barnie2years comments on Mar 21, 2019:

Thirty percent of all respondents said white nationalists posed a significant threat to national security, more than Syria, which only 27 percent of respondents described as a national security threat. Nearly 5 percent of respondents wrote comments complaining that groups like Black Lives Matter should have been included as national security threats, the Military Times reported.

Which group of people would be more likely to help those in need... theists, agnostics or atheists?
Barnie2years comments on Mar 5, 2019:
As with most things, there is not one answer. There are generous, loving people in all three categories, just as there are greedy assholes in all categories. Without research which might be difficult to find, given that most charitable organizations don't ask, nor do they care, what you believe in when you send them money, actual numbers could be hard to come by. Given that hundreds of theist charitable organizations exist for every secular one, it makes it even harder to trace the beliefs of those who donate. I have read of non believers being turned away when they tried to volunteer to work for church related charitable organizations. But my guess these are a aberration rather than a norm.

Washing car triggers storms
Barnie2years comments on Feb 24, 2019:
Worst case: One time I spent a couple of hours on a nice sunny day, not only hand washing, but also waxing my truck. This was a most unusual event, since I tend to rarely do more than run it through a car wash. All proud of my handiwork, I set off for a destination, I no longer remember. I was traveling at highway speed down the four lane, when I suddenly realized I was passing the exit I wanted to get off! So last minute, a quick move over to the ramp, right through an enormous mud puddle where the road spit! Mud flew everywhere! My shinny truck looked ten times worse than it did in the morning before I spent hours of sweat cleaning it up! ? Needless to say, there have been even less hand washing let alone waxing since. Drive through is plenty clean enough, and I get a free wash coupon at my dealership every time I get it serviced, so win/win!

That is one of my issues with holding people responsible for missteps they took in their younger days. Be it groping, pot smoking, black face, cross dressing or other non felonies. Assuming you have matured and become a respectable person, you should be able to apologize and be judged on the character of your present and recent past. Look, Republicans totally ignored Trump’s very recent pussy grabbing, peeping on teenagers and philandering. Meanwhile, the Democrats are sidelining good politicians for things they did in their 20’s and have led as far as we know, exemplary lives since. Al Franken is a perfect example. He did weird, immature things back when he was a comedian. As he got older he settled down to become a champion of women, progressive politics and a leader of the party. Then we throw him aside, open the door for his seat in Congress to be taken by a conservative who will work against our Party, for something that he apologized for and it was decades ago. Actual criminals get pardons and are able to rehabilitate, why do we hold good people to an even higher standard? Sorry If I went a bit off the theme of the post.

That is one expensive shirt! I wear stuff forever, but it would be in the rag bin before I spent any money to repair them. If it’s something simple I do it myself (not half as good as you, for sure). I have darned socks a few times, sewn a belt loop on or a pocket. This was major surgery!

Love baby goats! If I lived in the countryside I think I would own a few.
Why do men save badly worn-out clothes?
Barnie2years comments on Feb 2, 2019:
I will wear stuff until it falls apart because I like them and much of the new clothes don’t feel or fit as nice. I have an old tattered flannel shirt, was my dad’s and passed on to me. The collar is close to falling off, so I only wear it around the house (most of the time) or to walk the dog. But it is warm, has two nice pockets, and fits comfortable. If the collar goes, I might just try to customize it into a neru collar with no wings! ? I generally take pretty good care of my clothing. Much of what is in my closet is ten to twenty years old and look fine; colors not faded, no holes, and still fit.
Why So Many Smart People Aren’t Happy - The Atlantic - Pocket
Barnie2years comments on Feb 1, 2019:
Smart is in the eye of the beholder. It is generally self defined, leaving a lot up to the individual. Look, Trump has self described as a Stabile Genius when most of the world considers him nuts. And IQ measures intelligence, not nessisarily smart. There is a difference. I had a friend who was very intelligent, he could answer questions on history and world governments without hesitation. But the man couldn’t fry an egg. My philosophy has always been that everyone is stupid, just in different ways. Perhaps the same could be said of smart?

Kind of reminds me of Yoga class, except I had pants on. But the feeling of needing fart suppression was the same ?.
Coincidence that most atheists oppose Trump?

Coincidence that most atheists oppose Trump?

Reading through the commentary on this post shows that while most on this site are progressives there are a group of what can best be described as Anarchistes, though they I believe prefer the term Libertarian. They tend to think that mankind can exist with no rules, no central government, no leaders. They would do very well in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the central government is weak, the country is run by warring clans run by warlords and fringe groups. There is little infrastructure, spotty education and constant battles to expand dominance. No thanks! I may not be happy with the Republican leadership in place now, but at least I know there is a possibility if not a probability that they will be replaced in the years ahead by forward looking representatives rather than those who want to go backwards to a fantasy time that never really existed or can never be replicated.
Coincidence that most atheists oppose Trump?
Barnie2years comments on Jan 31, 2019:
Because most Atheist are thoughtful and reasoned. They strive to research and understand issues before making statements. We may not all agree on many things, but we can usually provide references to support our positions on whatever issue we may be arguing. Trump is just a big mouth who invents things, lies continuously about most everything, even the most inconsequential and trivial things (like how many attended his inauguration just for an example), offers no references to back up anything he says, because there is none. It's why the Evangelicals love him so much, their entire life is built around believing they have the truth and everyone who doesn't believe what they do is wrong, without anything to back their belief other than their antiquated book of legends. They are perfect for Trump. we are not.

My father was watching the news one night and was surprised to hear that the island of Leyte in the Philippines was having massive mud slides destroying towns and killing people. He had fought there in WW II and remembered it as a lushly forested island. He Googled it on satellite imagery and could not believe that they had basically cut down the majority of the jungle for farming and building. It made him very sad.

I love Colbert! The movie he sites is exactly what Trump describes in his Tweet! The man has no concept of fact and reality, pretty much the same as the base that finds him so relatable. Sadly, they are not in the possession of the Nuclear Launch Code and the country. He is, and it is scary.
The article says Celine looks “breath-taking”.

The bone show look doesn't do anything for me, but then neither does the ripped look. But hey, whatever floats your boat! I don't expect to get an invitation to date her anyway LOL. I know my dad went from 300 lbs to around 120 when he was sick. There was a brief time in the transition when he looked healthy. When you can count every bone in your body seems kind of extreme to me.
What is the thing you miss most about being in a relationship?
Barnie2years comments on Jan 30, 2019:
Discussing the movie we’re watching while her head is on my lap. The feel of the soft skin on her face as I stroke it. The long, lingering kiss, warm breath on my neck, laughter to go with mine. Human contact. My puppy is a love bug, but it’s not the same as human contact.
