I deeply believe that there is no guiding Force or Purpose in life -- only what you make out of it.

This of course is why headline writing has become an art form and staple of “fake news” as our dear leader likes to call it. I feel quite certain Trump never gets past the headline on most everything he is given to read. Making world changing decisions based on the headline of a detailed DOD report, or an environmental report has consequences that are generally not positive. I believe it is at the heart of our societal deterioration, “sound bite” news is not how you learn what is real.

I haven’t been on very long, but compared to Facebook, I have found some interesting, in depth, discussions on topics of interest. You have to do some digging to find those topics, and pass up a lot of garbage, but I find it worthwhile. Sadly many post strange, innocuous stuff just to get points. And responders throw out insults, stupidities and non responses, but they are easy enough to skip over and not respond to. I dropped out of the singles group shortly after joining because I got tired of all the posts saying good morning and talking about their breakfast and coffee consumption. I also don’t get why people feel the need to respond to posts in negatives and off the cuff responses that contribute nothing to the conversation, as so many did here on this post. Gold generally doesn’t float to the surface, you have to dig for it and throw out a lot of dirt to get to it. Don’t leave, just spend a little more time filtering out the drivel and be open to find new friends and topics.
I thought the compatibility scores were supposed to be based on our own interests ?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 16, 2018:
My understanding is it is based on the number of matches in your profile questions. The percentage doesn’t weigh which answers, and the less questions you answer, the higher your percentage of matches is liable to be. A very unsophisticated and inexact number for sure if I am right.

I'm not sure I consider RIP a religious reference, though I am sure religious people may. But for many, including myself, we look at death as a respite from the trials and tribulations of life, not as the beginning of a new journey into the promised land LOL! Like a dreamless sleep is peaceful. One of my current meds has been making me dream nightly, not nightmares but exhausting dreams anyway. I would love to rest in peace at night. And don't fear the other, since that ends any problems I may have anyway.

He is well spoken, seems like a fun guy to hang out with and needs to get more air time. I fought for Bernie the last time, and I like him and Elizabeth Warren as senators, but not sure either is the right person to take on Trump at this critical time in our democracy. I would love to have more background on Martin or see someone new take the lead. What I don't want is Hillary making another run for president. She let Trump and the Republicans override her entire campaign and did not have the strength to go toe to toe with the Orange Baboon!

Barnie2years comments on Aug 16, 2018:
Kind of surprised by my Ancestry results. I have mostly German ancestry, both mom’s parents are German Swiss and my dad’s father’s family is German. Only my father’s mother was Irish/Scotch decent. My DNA came back 63% UK. The other largest percentages were Scandinavia and Italian, with minor percentages from other countries, nothing from Germany at all! How can 3/4 of my ancestry be German and no DNA shows up in my test. Kind of made me wonder how accurate they are.

Was becoming atheist difficult?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 15, 2018:
I’m not sure you “become” an Atheist so much as you just kind of wake up to the lies floating around you that are built on what at best is a really bad history book. I am not sure I ever swallowed the whole praying and thanking malarkey, since it was obviously kind of a useless pastime (people still died, food was bought at the store by money earned by working, Santa didn’t bring toys). I tend to question everything and search for logic, and there was none to be found in any religious practice I could find.

Excluding sex or bathing, what activities have you done naked?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 12, 2018:
I convinced my second wife to go to a local naturalist camp twice. The actual reason we went twice was the first time she did not get naked and was told she could not be in the pool area in a bathing suit. So I convinced her that she didn’t really have the nudist experience and talked her into going and actually being naked. She was not comfortable with it and we never went again. I also spent three days by myself at Hedonism II in Jamaica nude resort. I consider this to have been one of my best vacations ever, though it would have been much more fun if I had a partner there to enjoy it with.
Do you ever feel like you live in a different world to everyone else?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 12, 2018:
I have felt likeI didn’t fit in my whole life! Some of it I blame on the fact that my father’s work has us moving every two to three years, often to different countries. You become used to developing your own way of thinking and don’t tend to let yourself make close attachments. Hard to be a sheep when your herd keeps changing! Being exposed to different cultures and values opens your mind to not being pigeonholed as well. But it makes it very hard to find a place to fit in. You find that groups may appeal to one part of your beliefs, but totally turn off others. I have lots of acquaintances, but not really any I would consider close friends. I belong to a motorcycle group and enjoy many of the people when we meet, but feel no real rapport with any of them and don’t associate outside our club activities. Same when I was working and a union member. I was an officer in my local, but never felt attached to my fellow officers or members. I have gotten used to being alone and find myself avoiding people as much as possible, while still being available to those few who take the time to contact me.

Is it difficult to be a good person?
Barnie2years comments on Aug 11, 2018:
Being a kind person within your tribe is generally not too difficult, and the vast majority of people are. It is one of the reasons humans form tribes, be they geographic areas, common ancestry, race or religion. Being nice to those outside your tribe requires more work and a more fluid view of your belonging in one tribe. Christians for instance will donate money and time for missions and food banks etc. But they don’t necessarily want those people they are supporting to move next door, or even into their town. White suppremists will help their fellow white people gladly, but not a person of color. A homophobe might be the nicest person you could meet if you are a heterosexual couple, but would treat you like dirt if you were a homosexual one. So being kind and nice is often dependent on many factors. There are those people who tend to be less tribal and more open and able to being kind to everyone. Sadly, I don’t think they are a majority, or there would be far less violence in the world.
Got my divorce papers today.
Barnie2years comments on Aug 11, 2018:
Not sure about British divorce law, but in Pennsylvania, when I got my first divorce (1977) it was a “fault” state. In order to file for divorce you had to provide a valid reason (cheating, abuse, etc). Since I was filing, I had to provide the reason I wanted the divorce. In truth, we had just grown apart and the love had dried up and disappeared, but that would not qualify. So my attorney and I came up with a bunch of bullshit stories about her swearing at me, throwing things at me, name calling etc. I dreaded her reading it and tried to explain, but she was rightfully hurt and pissed. Thank goodness a few years later Pennsylvania changed the law for divorce to “no fault” and finger pointing was no longer required. Maybe the UK has fault divorce too.

It didn't work for me. The difference in our definition of what "normal" married sex should be was way off. She would be quite willing to live together if there were no physical activities involved. Having a discussion on another social site about the bible.
Barnie2years comments on Aug 10, 2018:
The Bible is history in the sense that events such as floods, wars, migrations and others probably happened in the general areas and times of the Middle East. Much of what can be found in the modern Bible are events described in tablets from Babylonian times, which were scribed from verbal legends passed down through generations of storytelling. Does that make the Bible a verbatim history of the world? Not by any stretch of the imagination, any more than Native American or Australian Aboriginal legends and wall drawings are accurate depictions of world history for anything more than the small area of territory in which they were told.
MAKING OUT WITH YOUR EX - My ex and I are still friends and we still go out and do things ...
Barnie2years comments on Aug 10, 2018:
Feel luck. My ex just uses me when she needs help with something, (her son, dog, house computer) but if we are together treats me like I have leprosy and keeps a circle of safety around me. That was one of the issues when we were married: I was crazy about her, she treated sex like it was some burden that she needed to accept a few times a month to keep me from being frustrated. She has no other real friends, she is not an easy person to get along with, and I have nothing better to do, so we help each other out. She has taken me to medical appointments when I was not allowed to drive and watches my dog (her dog’s pup) if I have to be away. But those are the only benefits.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 8, 2018:
Love is a powerful emotion and difficult to explain. It explodes, it fades, it changes directions, sometimes it multiplies. Falling in love can be just as hard to corner. Love can be lust, love at first sight, love that develops from friendship, love that builds over time or love that is never returned. It always bothered me when someone said that the person they were in love with lied to them when they said they loved them too. It is generally not that they lied, but that the feeling of love just faded away. The reason is not always evident even to the person who lost the feeling, but it doesn’t mean they didn’t love you when they said they did.

I am still friends with my second wife's mom (my ex passed away a year and a half ago), and love to see her at my son's family functions. She's 80 years old but runs around like someone 20 years younger. I got along very well with my first wife's parents as well.
Question for the women
Barnie2years comments on Aug 8, 2018:
I had very little luck with pay for play dating sites. You know, the ones where you sign up for free, they send you all these pictures of beautiful women that are interested in talking to you, but you cannot unless you sign up for an expensive 30 day plan or a more expensive longer plan. Then once you do, all the lovely ladies disappear and if you get any responses to messages, it is to tell you they are no longer available. But obviously they work for some people, my sister married a Swiss guy she met online and another friend married a Chinese woman who has stayed with him even though he had a major stroke. Just never worked for me.

There was an episode of the Twilight Zone that scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. The plot of the episode was this guy goes through his life, a rough life of growing up, committing crimes and getting caught. Finally, he gets arrested for a murder and sentenced to death. Near the end of the movie, he is in the electric chair, maintaining his innocence. They throw the switch and.... His life starts over, exactly the same. The idea of life being being a loop that keeps repeating itself just scared the shit out of me! I don’t have half the issues you do, but I have told people many times that I consider the ups and downs of life to be the only heaven and hell there is.

As a liberal with many conservative, Trump loving family members, not to mention religious, let me quickly point out that any form of respecting others beliefs by either of these groups is completely alien to their thinking process. In fact, from interactions on Facebook, most of them consider Liberal baiting to be a great sport! As a man, I truly believe that the need to force your opinions on others is less common among women, but I have run into what appear to be female trolls. With online, you can never be sure who you are getting regardless of pictures and names. As long as you read their profiles and scour their posts and comments before responding, you should be able to get some sense of their political leanings as well as their philosophy and beliefs. I generally try to do that before I message someone, though sometimes a person will catch my interest by something they post and I just want to say hi or perhaps get a private clarification of something said or posted. Impossible relationship
Barnie2years comments on Aug 3, 2018:
The problem I see is not only do you have to overcome the differences between the two of you, but also deal with a religious family dynamic. First, the believer probably has to be a fairly liberated believer. If they are weekly attenders of church, bible studies and other church functions and you choose not to go at all, it could be an issue. As a non believer, are you OK with your children being baptized? Will you attend the service? Will you go to holiday services with their family; church weddings and funerals? Is your partner going to be all right with going to all these events on their own if you are not willing to spend time in that environment? My first and second wife were not Atheists, but neither were they really church going people, mainly holidays and events. I was willing to go for certain activities to keep family harmony. Besides, the more times I have been in church, the more it reinforces how silly the whole thing is, so I had no fear of being converted! ?

Trump’s Boast About Getting Remains From Korea is Collapsing
Barnie2years comments on Aug 2, 2018:
I don't mean any disrespect to these combat casualties or those from any other wars. But war is hell and bodies disappear, are buried in the field of combat, in the case of airmen, obliterated by fire and impact. For those take prisoner, many don't survive long and are disposed of by cremation or burial in unmarked graves. I understand for loved ones and family of those lost at war, the thought of not being certain their loved one actually died or not having an actual body to bury, a scrap of some kind to hold onto it traumatic. But this is how war works. They still, from time to time, discover bodies in the fields of Gettysburg and I am sure other Civil War battlefields. Bodies often work their way to the surface all over Europe from the many wars fought over there. If these remains are never found in areas where we won the battles, they are our allies, there was full access to the grounds, what are the chances that an enemy, closed society like North Korea, would have any real interest in preserving remains for more than half a century? The Vietnamese have been helpful in repatriating a certain amount of remains, but that is a much more recent war. And there are still hundreds if not thousands missing. For Kim and Trump, neither of whom have put their lives on the line in combat to use these remains as political fodder is both loathum and a show for those who have suffered the most. Again, I feel bad for those who never got to say goodbye to a loved one missing or killed in action, but I would be amazed that the containers being sent over from Korea contain actually US soldiers remains. Kim kills enough of his own citizens on a regular basis to fill planes full of boxes of bones.

Barnie2years comments on Aug 1, 2018:
Thankfully most dance floors are dimly lit and don’t have clear mirrors! ? So, looking around at how badly many people dance, I can always convince myself that I don’t look that bad! ? I try not to dance too often in daylight!
Dealing with barriers
Barnie2years comments on Jul 31, 2018:
Interesting visual presentation of the issue. Some would argue that under the justice panel, the kid is stuck looking through the fence, while the adults have a cleat view, the equivalent of drilling a hole through the wood fence at his eye level. Of course the helicopter parents would say justice provides more safety to the kid than the equity position, so it is really the best. Not picking sides, just making legal arguments! ?
What's your answer to "what if you die and God is real?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 30, 2018:
I always find this question silly and not worthy of an answer. I don’t believe in god, so this question to me is the same as me asking them “if you woke up on Christmas morning and there were gifts under the tree you didn’t put there, would you believe in Santa Clause? Has a tendency to end the discussion.
A campaign to blitz the country with ‘In God We Trust’ laws takes root - Religion News Service
Barnie2years comments on Jul 30, 2018:
Any one else notice that the states passing these laws are the same exact ones that fought against abolishing slavery? It is not a coincidence, you can be sure, and much of the same Evangelical zeal was put into denying human rights to people of color that is now going into denying people of other faiths, no faiths, differing sexual beliefs, or sexual identification, their hunan rights. And with a Federal Judiciary presently being stuffed by Trump and the reactionary wing of the Republican Party, it could take another Civil War or over half a century to right these affronts to humanism and personal rights.

Barnie2years comments on Jul 30, 2018:
They see their savior in Trump, who knows he can guarantee himself support among the believers, no matter what atrocities he has actually committed or is committing by promising to give them more power in government. Meanwhile, like the con men and women on Evangelical TV, he will squeeze them for every dollar they own to enrich himself and his pack of greedy supporters, flag wavers and blessers everyone.
What would life be like if there was not the phrase “in God we trust” in our lives?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 30, 2018:
Exactly the same as if it said e pluribus unum or Mars Rules. It’s just a stupid moto for stupid people.who need constant verification that they are “special.”
If and when this happens, it's time to make a plan and get out.

Never really have that problem. It’s once I get to sleep: one of the damn medications they have me on has caused me to have exhausting dream every night. Not nightmares, just dreams where I’m chasing, being chased getting the run around, frustrated... You name it, I wake up more tired then when I went to bed! They changed one med, but it didn’t make a difference. I rarely had dreams of any kind before they added the heart medications in February.

Barnie2years comments on Jul 28, 2018:
I generally look for 10 under to maybe a tear or two over my age. That being said, if we met in the only fashion way, face to face, I have no cut offs, though I would seriously hesitate starting a relationship with anyone under 40. But I have met women into their 70’s or early 80’s who I would have been happy t spend time with.

Always being right, even when you’re not. No matter what it is, with or without reasoning behind it, only your opinion is right. I posted a profile on a dating site once, said I like to have discussions, but “because I say so” does not back up your statement.

How important is old age IF the person is an interesting and attractive one?
Barnie2years comments on Jul 24, 2018:
Age is a number, plain and simple, but society and culture can put pressures on that are hard to surmount. I dated a 37 year old when I was 19 and married a 30 year old when I was 50. In between there were relationships with both older and younger. I have never let a persons age define how I felt about them. There are way more important things to consider.

Barnie2years comments on Jul 24, 2018:
The whole love relationship thing is kind of a western culture thing. Many eastern and other culture have arranged marriages, where love is a non issue and most marriages last way longer than those founded on sparks. And many of those arranged marriages seem to develop a love bond at some point from what I have seen, assuming the partners show each other affection and respect.
